I loved the characters and the whole concept of the Scholomance. Particularly liked the idea of someone who doesn't fit in, not suddenly having their life transformed by going to a magical school. El struggles to be liked,is prickly for a reason, and her progress is all that more rewarding....more

Maybe it helps not knowing anything about Les Mis but I really enjoyed this. It was a bit clunky getting going, but I liked The Jungle Book aspect (Nina is clearly Bagheera, the Black Cat, and Ettie is Mowgli, wanted by the Tiger). I see people complaining about historical inaccuracies but it's alt history fantasy so it doesn't matter? I thought it was standalone but I see a series is now planned. It still has a satisfying ending and I would probably read a follow up....more
