I’m trying to read more picture books and middle grade books since I now work in a bookstore with lots of kids coming in, and I’ve found some winners. I’d never heard of Eugenie Clark, but I always love reading about female scientists who break barriers - and her work with sharks was so cool! Recommend for any kids into science, the ocean and/or sharks. ...more

I had never heard of Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide, but I can confidently say her photos are now some of my favorites - the sheer power of each one’s story is incredible. I feel like telling her story through illustrations and the addition of her own photos really added to this graphic biography- I was invested from the first page, and I loved how the author & illustrator set up the dialogue as if it was Iturbide herself talking to the reader. I’d never heard of her until reading this, but I’m so excited to get to learn more about her and her work in the future! ...more
If you’re at all interested in classic horror, women in Hollywood, or the sexism pervasive in Hollywood and the horror movie industry (cough, cough), If you’re at all interested in classic horror, women in Hollywood, or the sexism pervasive in Hollywood and the horror movie industry (cough, cough), pick this up. One of my most anticipated releases of 2019, O’Meara does a beautiful job of bringing Milicent Patrick’s story to life. For those who don’t know, Milicent Patrick was an actress, makeup artist, special effects designer and animator (yeah, your girl was SERIOUSLY talented). She’s probably most well known for designing the Creature from the movie The Creature from the Black Lagoon, which as a lady who loves horror, is amazing, but Milicent truly was a master and appreciator of all parts of cinema. The level of detail within her research, her writing style, her sense of humor - I loved it all, and I especially loved getting to know the author as well throughout Milicent’s story. I really feel that the best nonfiction gives us a bit of the writer, too, and O’Meara’s dedication to bringing Milicent’s life out from the shadows is so touching. There were quite a few points when I teared up, especially at the end. This is a truly arresting, beautiful biography for a lady all horror fans should know, and I can’t wait to read all that O’Meara publishes. I felt so seen with this book as both a lifelong lover of horror and someone who fully supports embracing your own weird, unique self, and I think Milicent would feel the very same. ...more

Most of the women covered were ones I knew of, but it was great to get some extra info. A good blend of facts, fun and feminism - what more could ya want? The X entry - "X is for the women whose names we don't know" - is enough reason to pick up this one. Brilliant....more
