it was ok
bookshelves: 2021-reads, fiction, netgalley, buddy-read-with-marialyce

Outlier opinion: 2 very disappointed (and generous) stars

51 year old twins, Jeannie and Julius, uneducated and living their entire lives with their mother in nothing more than a shack, eke out a meager living with their vegetable garden, chickens, and the occasional odd job.

Their lives are turned upside down when their mother unexpectedly dies. Eventually secrets are revealed, and events happen which changes their lives forever.

I ask myself after I’ve read a book if the author’s purpose was achieved. In this case I honestly can’t discern a purpose.

The writing was nothing special, the characters, both good and evil, were comical caricatures, and pages and pages were written of the mundane minutiae of their daily lives. There was not enough of a plot to drive the story forward.

Every decision Jeannie and Julius make are bad ones. ( Like mine in continuing to read a book I’m not enjoying)

The relationships in the book were so unrealistic and laughable it made my eyes roll. The friendships and the love affair were so unlikely and laughable that they couldn’t be taken seriously. I guessed very early on what the big “secrets” were and I was correct.

I typically enjoy character-driven stories, even when they are bleak, but in this case the only character I enjoyed was Maude, the dog.

I requested this because it’s on the 2021 Women’s Prize shortlist. I’ve read and enjoyed several others, namely Transcendent Kingdom and The Vanishing Half, but this was a complete miss.

Very disappointing buddy read for Marialyce and me. Many readers loved it, so do read their reviews for a different perspective.

* I received a digital copy of this book via NetGalley. All opinions are my own

Diane Wallace Fair insight, Jan

Marialyce It was dreadful!

Kat (Books are Comfort Food) Sounds awful, Jan. Great review though, and I agree with Regina: Thank god for Maude the dog! 😊

Richard (on hiatus) I’ve never read this author but have seen a couple of her books I like the look of, shame this one was such a disappointment. You reviewed it well, and fairly, Jan.

Michael David (on hiatus) I appreciate the honest review, Jan! Hope you're moving on to something much better.

message 7: by Kerrin (new)

Kerrin Sorry it didn't work out! Apparently, you are not an outlier since Marialyce didn't like it either.

Melissa ~ Bantering Books And my balloon is officially deflated. Lol. I appreciate your fair and honest review. "Unsettled Ground" is one that I was looking forward to, but I know now to not be TOO excited for it. I hope your next read is much, much better. :)

Kat, it certainly was for us, but we are the outliers. Maude was so sweet 💕

This was my first book by this author, and, unfortunately, I won't be in a hurry to read another. Thanks so much Richard!

Thanks Kerrin. I should have said WE are the outliers. :) Most reviews are glowing....but not every book is for every reader, right?

Sorry Melissa! You can inflate your balloon again by reading all the other reviews, ha. It wasn't for us, but it seems to be for others. I do hope you are with the majority! 😊🤞

Maude was the best! I think I gave the author the second star because at least she didn't kill her off, lol. Thanks Yun!

Bill Kupersmith I loved the author's Our Endless Numbered Days and liked Bitter Orange, but this one totally flopped for me. Julius and Jeanie are so totally clueless; surely most teenagers have more ability to cope with life.

Julie Fair and honest review, Jan! Sorry this one was a miss. Hope your next book is a winner! 💖

Bianca Great review, Jan. I was wondering about this one. Even without the points you brought forward, it sounded too bleak, so I removed it from my TBR.

Farrah Ooooo sorry you disliked it so much but you raise really good points. Hope you're into a winner right now 😊

Thanks Bianca. Bleak is an understatement. The only positive is the author didn't kill off sweet Maude 🐶

message 40: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Sorry to see this one was a miss :( hope your next read is better. Fantastic review, Jan! 💜

Susanne Fantabulous review Jan! I finished this one last week and I agree with you about all of Julius and Jeannie's decisions being bad ones. This book truly boggled the mind.. I liked it but didn't come away "loving" it. I can't quite place my finger on why that was. Sorry this didn't thrill you however. Hope you love your next read.

Thanks Susanne! I’m glad it’s just not me. There was something about the storytelling that just didn’t work for me. And the issues I mentioned that made my eyes roll instead of tugging at my heartstrings. I found it all pretty ridiculous, lol. I’ll be watching for your review :)

Thanks Angela. I’m usually soft-hearted but the style of writing and the farcical circumstances left me cold. I just couldn’t take it seriously. I’m glad you loved it!
