it was amazing

This is a work that shows fiction can be simultaneously innovative and also eminently readable. The Performance follows three women as they watch a performance of Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days. Set in Melbourne during the 2019-20 bushfire season, fire engulfs the Australian countryside outside the theater while the play goes on inside. The chapters alternate between the perspectives of the three women as they watch the performance. The narrative weaves from third to first (and occasionally second) person, a change so effortless and subtle we hardly notice. Through the story, we see the many ways in which our lives, consciously or not, are fundamentally performative.

Lisa David, I know 3 other people who have read this book. One loved it, one didn't care for it, and one thought it was okay. What made it a 5 star read for you?

David The effortless shifting perspective. Totally innovative, yet readable and engrossing.

Tuti excellent review! have just finished reading and totally agree - a 5 star read!

David I’m glad you like it Tuti! It’s very subtle

Thanks for this review, which definitely helped me make a decision — to get my hands on The Performance, of course!
(I love Beckett and ‘Happy Days’ is a play I’ve read and seen several times in both French and English, so that should be fun as a backdrop, too!

But just like Lisa commented above, I’ve read reviews or been told by other people that this was just “meh”, or “a waste of time”, or even “nonsensical”.

But hey, the author picked a Beckett play, did she not?!

In hindsight, I suppose ‘nonsensical’ when talking about a book that features a Beckett play no longer sounds so harsh now, does it?! ;-)

reading is my hustle i returned this to the library before i had a chance to read it & am glad to see you liked it so much. i will put a hold on it again. i love the concept & after reading your review can't wait to get into it.
