Because Woodward and Costas are reporters and talented writers, this book reads more like a thriller than a serious historical tome. Which is fine, because the 400-odd pages fly by, most stuff you know already, other stuff has been teased close to publication like Milley's phone calls to his counterpart in China. I actually learned more in the last quarter of the book after Biden is sworn in and begins his interminable jousting with Joe Manchin.

Jean Agree with all of that, Mike. There are a few highlights, stuff we didn’t know, but rather anticlimactic after the prologue, I thought. Thanks for your honest review.

Primrosebarks Yes, it reads like a tell-all thriller---probably because the American public values entertainment over facts---but I'm gratified by the voluminous notes at the end offering verification of every charge made. That is quality reporting. Cheers!

Lilo So why did you give the book only 3 stars?

I'm pretty stingy with stars...just looked, I'm batting 3.41. I did like the book and maybe I'm getting a little bit more curmudgeonly.

I am probably more generous with every book that criticizes Trump. :-)

Mike I am probably more generous with every book that criticizes Trump. :-)

For number of presidential bios and relevant historical tomes, Lincoln is way out in front and FDR is second but I think 45 will clean them both up in sheer number of (deserved) hit pieces.
