it was amazing
bookshelves: urban-paranormal, vaginal-urban-fantasy

At first I loved Karen Chance's other series, Cassie Palmer, better, but this book definitely seals my Dorina favoritism. This book pretty much has everything you want in one of these series, vampires, fae, smart ass chicks, and TONS of action scenes. Actually I think this author does action scenes better than any other paranormal author out there, she knows how to raise the stakes in incredible ways. In fact, I think sometimes she OVERDOES the action scenes (see the last Cassie Palmer book for reference), but this one has a perfect balance of mystery, world-building, character stuff and relationships. Really satisfying read, and I can't wait for more.

Cheryl I read one of Karen Chance's books -- her first, I think. I enjoyed seeing some new twists and concepts, but I had a problem with the narrator suddenly taking charge during her first intimate encounter (especially since it was with someone she'd just met). I'd been happy to see a virgin protagonist in urban fiction (pretty unique for the genre), and that scene just ruined the book for me -- it seemed unrealistic and felt like the author was caving in to the unwritten rule that women in urban fantasy have to have sex in every book.

But your review makes it sound like I was too quick to dismiss Karen Chance. I particularly like that you praised her action scenes -- I love a good action scene. I'll keep this series in mind for the future. I'm still a little burned out on urban fantasy, but I suspect I'll go back to it at some point. Thanks for sharing!

Carmen I love Dory! She is so badass. I stopped reading the other series because I found Cassie so annoying and the action to be kind of over the top.
Dory is so much better. I also love Lia de Croissets from the short stories set in the same world. Badass witch. I wish she were the protagonist of the series instead of Cassandra.

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ I love Karen's books. Both series are great. I do have to re-read the first Dorina book though.

Yeah I liked Cassie until the last book, I am so confused about her character now, I was such a Mircea fan (Dorina books just make me MOREso) so wtf is she doing with that mage guy? Come ON!

Bee I really like both this series and the Cassie Palmer series, but this book had too much "pass out in the middle of action and wake up later" for me. I get why Chance did it, but it just broke up the flow of the action scenes a bit too much.

Larissa Gotta agree! I jave been looking forward to Dorina's books much more than Cassie's!
