Update after my February 2020 Re-read

A lot has happened in the world since I read this in high school in the mid-1990s. The book is as interesting and powerful as I remember. However, I think having an adult perspective on life, government, laws, taxes, rights, etc. makes this a much more powerful for me now than it was when I was a teenager.

One of the great things about this book, too, is that it is not very long. I think that morality tales with political undertones can be daunting if you know you are dealing with a 300-page book. This tells a strong tale in 125 pages or so that is easy to read but difficult to swallow. An allegory that is a must read for all!

I will also say that this book has an ending that I remember as being “wow, but not super shocking” as a teenager. Now, it is absolutely terrifying – it gave me chills!

Original review

One of the best - no doubt! So much symbolism and meaning crammed into such a small book. Also, a great use of anthropomorphism (I just wanted to use a big, fancy sounding word!)

Review wise, that is about all I need to say - it is great, read it!

But, I will add this anecdote . . .

I read this when I was in High School as required reading. Most required reading books were long and not all that exciting (I am looking at you, Jane Eyre!) But, this one was so good that I couldn't put it down. And, since it is so short, I read it in one night. Well, the teacher had assigned chapters and asked us not to read ahead. Still hard to believe I got in trouble for reading too much of a required reading book!

Sud666 A truly brilliant book...I might like it even more than 1984

Mei Oh, Matthew, I wish I had book like this one (and Jane Eyre too) as a required reading in school!!! I had book such as Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov ... and, you'll admit, they're waaayyyyy longer than Jane Eyre! LOL

I was remarking on their lenght, not quality! LOL
I still remember that as 14 years old I had some trouble remebering all the names!!!! O_o

Yeah..I read a lot of Russian Lit and the names and the nicknames (Grigori Illyich) for characters was tedious but got better over time :)

It's just a matter of getting used to them! Still not easy for young ones. IMHO these books are better appreciated by a more mature audience!
Animal House is a much better choice for youngers!

I can understand that

Matthew Another one of my favorites that was required reading is Gulliver's Travels. They didn't even require us to read the whole thing, but I did it anyway.

Another very good book for school reading! Together with Oliver Twist! ;)
I was a crazy teenager and I read some really strage stuff like Hermann Hesse's books and Aldous Huxley Brave New World... Not exactly what a teenager should read... LOL

Matthew Brave New World is in my top 3 of all time if not my very favorite. Orwell and Huxley were great!

message 11: by Mei (new)

Mei Have you tried Hesse? He's pretty good too!

Matthew I have a copy of Siddhartha (free Kindle version) but I haven't read it yet. Unfortunately, when I get free Kindle books I tend to forget about them . . .

message 13: by Mei (new)

Mei Siddhartha is good! It's rather short book, so it will not take too much to read it!
I liked very much Steppenwolf too!

message 14: by Ron (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ron I keep saying that I need to reread it Matthew. One of the few assigned books in school that I also loved. Super review!

Sud666 Don't forget Stevenson's Treasure Island and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or Twain's Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn- all four are excellent but not annoying hard to deal with

I need to get to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ASAP! Also, maybe a re-read of the others.

Michael Perkins Sales and library borrowings of Orwell are up since Trump was elected, but we are a Huxleyan society in many ways....

I have that quote in my likes!

Guess this current political climate is good for literature!

Michael Perkins ha, I think I sent that to you! ;-) Read Orwell when young, but did not get around to BNW until two years ago now. When I did some background on the book, that's when I ran across the quote, from 30 years ago!

Matt I love Orwell! Way ahead of his time.

message 21: by Abe (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abe I agree that so much content has never been crammed so masterfully into so brief a book.

message 24: by Pat (new)

Pat I suppose it is a book that I should read. As far as school books go, I’ve always wanted to re-read Future Shock by Alvin Toffler.

Matthew Pat wrote: "I suppose it is a book that I should read. As far as school books go, I’ve always wanted to re-read Future Shock by Alvin Toffler."

Animal Farm is worth it and a quick read!

Nels A must read! Great book!

Petra I'm glad to see Orwell still being read. His books are so good. This one is a chilling tale, I agree.

Matthew Nels wrote: "A must read! Great book!"

Agreed! :D

Matthew Petra wrote: "I'm glad to see Orwell still being read. His books are so good. This one is a chilling tale, I agree."

Yes - this and 1984 are two of my favorites. I feel like they are more widely applicable cautionary tales that people can connect with no matter their political beliefs.

Bella I need to read this one. I remember the last sentence of 1984 gave me the chills.

Matthew Bella wrote: "I need to read this one. I remember the last sentence of 1984 gave me the chills."

This one, too! Orwell is good with his last lines!

Maricarmen Estrada M Felt the same chills! Great book indeed! Loved your review Matthew

Carol Matthew, I use that quote all the time, and am surprised by the number of people who don't get the reference.

Matthew Carol wrote: "Matthew, I use that quote all the time, and am surprised by the number of people who don't get the reference."

Lisa In my AP Lit class, required reading was Lord of the Flies and Scarlet Letter, which I was lucky, I loved them both. I did, however, hate Romeo and Juliet, but I was 14 or 15 maybe.

I was not a fan of The Scarlet Letter - still planning to try again someday!

Tej Patel The only experience I have with Orwell is in high school with 1984. Loved it for what it was doing--hopefully I can get my meaty little pig feet on this one and have the same experience!

Matthew Tej wrote: "meaty little pig feet"

This made me LOL!

I bet you will enjoy this one!

Faizan I read it yesterday. I was laughing in horror throughout the book.

Matthew Omar wrote: "I read it yesterday. I was laughing in horror throughout the book."

Yup - sounds about right!

Matthew Sarah wrote: "Just read this books for the first time. Hugely thought provoking read. From the beginning it is easy to predict where the story is going, which is the sad part I suppose. A great book however."

Definitely - it grabs you right away and then sticks with you forever. I am glad you enjoyed it, Sarah!
