2.5 stars...

Well, this review is going to be short, because I do not have much to say about this book sadly… I just want to clarify that I do not think this is a bad book, simply that it’s too long, and it should have been a novella instead of book #5 of the series.

Only his memories can save her...

They made it sound way more dramatic than it is.
After the final battle at the end of A War of Two Queens, Poppy falls into a stasis and will remain in it until she completes the culling. Nektas remembers Nyktos’ consort going through the same thing and suggests that Cas talks to her while she is in stasis to make sure that she remembers who she is, and who Cas is, once she wakes up. Cas decides to take Nektas’ advice and tells Poppy about when he first met her and learned to know her. So this is mostly a retelling of From Blood and Ash but from Cas’ point of view.

I have mixed feelings about this book.
On one hand, I really love Cas, Kieran, and Delano, and I was happy to get more of them. I also loved seeing Cas’ side of the budding romance between Poppy and him and seeing the conflicted feelings and the angst he was living with. Overall, he felt more vulnerable in this book, which made him more likable to me. The beginning and the ending of the book were also great, and now I am very excited for the next book to come out.

On the other hand, this felt way too long, many chapters felt pointless, and I feel that this might be a little bit of a money grab? The author better wrap up this series nicely and soon, because I am having flashbacks from the whole Zodiac Academy debacle here (if you made it to book 8 of the ZA series, you probably know what I’m talking about)… She keeps adding books to her series, and I am not sure I’m liking it, even though I love the series as a whole and the characters.

I did enjoy reading from Cas’ point of view, but I did find this book too long, and honestly, I was hoping for more backstory to be integrated into this book. I was super excited for a few chapters, like Poppy and Cas’ meeting at the Red Pearl, or when he sees her fighting for the first time on the rise, but most of the chapters were just a repetition of the events in FBAA from Cas’ point of view and they didn’t add much to the plot or the character. The dialogues between Cas and Poppy were the same, obviously, and the conversations between Cas and other characters, you know the new stuff that we didn’t read already in FBAA, were not that relevant or interesting. After 4 long books, we already know Cas quite well, so this book didn’t make me like him more, or discover a new side of him. I would have definitely enjoyed having a few of those chapters sold in a novella, or maybe as “bonus content” more than having to push myself through 630 pages of repetitive stuff. The fact that I already knew what would happen also made it harder for me to remain engaged and not skim the chapters that I found more boring.

There were a few chapters set in the present, meaning right after the events of The War of Two Queens, and I was happy to know what happened to Ires, Millie, and Malik. It was also good that Cas and Malik finally got some time to sit and talk, they needed it so much because there were so many conflicted feelings and so much tension and unease between them in The War of Two Queens. Overall though, those chapters represent only about 15% of the book: 10% at the beginning, and 5% here and there in between Cas’ remembering the events from the first book.

1. From Blood and Ash ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
2. A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
3. The Crown of Gilded Bones ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
4. The War of Two Queens ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
4.1 Cupcakes and Kisses ⭐⭐⭐

Farzana Ikr I was so excited on seeing this only to realise that it wasn't what happens next. I really love Cas but we really didn't need this.

I am frustrated honestly... I feel like the author is just trying to find ways to make the series longer to justify selling more books. I would love to read Cas' POV once the adventure is over... Not in the middle of it, and not a full-length novel that rehashes the same story all over again... 😑😑
Then again, I was a little pissed when she decided to stop FBAA to write ASITE and I ended up totally loving Nyktos and Sera, so maybe this one will be a nice surprise too... 🤞

Farzana I mean a full blown book is a bit much ig. A novella would have been more preferable. Also JLA is totally trying to drag the series out. This series has been such a full blown success that it's been really good for her. I love her and this series tho so I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

I guess we'll see in June... But that also means that we will not get book 6 until at least a year... 😭

Farzana That just honestly makes me sad 😭

Alexiani G Jennifer said we were going to need this and Willa's guide to understand the events of the fifth FBAA book so I trust she knows what she is doing

Lucie V. Alexiani wrote: "Jennifer said we were going to need this and Willa's guide to understand the events of the fifth FBAA book so I trust she knows what she is doing"

Yeah, I trust her for sure, but I still feel like this is a way to justify/selling more books. Of course, we're going to read the 2 books before book 6 because of the order, but I just really hope to be pleasantly surprised as I was with ASITE because at the moment I am a little scared to be disappointed... I tend not to enjoy "retellings of the same book from another POV" that much... 🤞🤞

Alexiani G I totally get your point and yes I do hope to be surprised with this book and to love it as well🤞🏻 I love some books with retellings and some others I don't so I do hope this one will be amazing🤭

Megan_the_book_witch Morrow I honestly wished she waited until after the series was completed. We don’t really need this.

Lucie V. @Megan yeah those are my thoughts exactly, but then again I was very pleasantly surprised by ASITE so a part of me is still hoping that this one will be a good surprise too… 😬🤞🏼🤞🏼

Britni Right ?! This should be book 4.5 not 5

Lucie V. Yes! Exactly!
Hopefully it will be a nice surprise and it will make me regret ever complaining about it. 🤞🏼😅

Lucie V. @Britni someone heard you, it is now labelled as book 4.5! 😅

message 14: by Ella (new) - added it

Ella Haha! I just saw that. I think it's probably a good idea to label it as 4.5 - not sure if will speed up the release dates tho...

Lucie V. @Ella probably not, you’re right… but at least it makes more sense to me than having the fifth book being a retelling of book one from Cas’s POV. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ella So true!

message 17: by bookish_vespa (new)

bookish_vespa Vespasiano Shouldn’t this book have been a #1.5 in the series? Book 5 should be after TWOTQ
I’m not rushing to read it if it’s just another POV but I will enjoy it when I do.

Seeker_of_mistborns I'm not going to read It, I'll look for a spoiler review and done

Lucie V. @bookish_vespa I honestly have no idea what to expect from this book. I will probably give it a try and hope to be pleasantly surprised by it, but I don’t have high expectations because I am afraid that it will be repetitive.

@Seeker_of_mostborns that could be an idea too 😅 I’ll see if my perfectionist side can live with having an incomplete physical series on my shelves. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Lucie V. @seeker_of_mistborns

Hannah In Jennifer’s Facebook group she said this book will contain new content during the time frame of book one and will also line up with the current story line so it should be read in the published order of the series. It will not just be a retelling of the same book from Cas’s POV.

Jenni Graff It’s FBAA scenes from Cas’ POV + present day events from his POV which is why it’s to be read after TWOTQ. It isn’t just a retelling of the first book, there’s updated info that propels the story forward immediately following TWOTQ events which is why it’s book 5.

OMG I never received a notification for your comment!!
I'm glad to know that it will be more than just Cas' POV of the first books, that's reassuring. :)
Thanks for taking the time to clarify that!

Hey! I never received a notification for your comment either, I am so sorry!!
Thanks for taking the time to clarify that, it is definitely more encouraging to know that there will be new content too in this book! :)

Lucie V. Anayah wrote: "100000%. Like I’m excited for this book, but pls. I need new material in the future sense!"

Apparently there will be new content too, I will keep an open mind until I read the book... Hopefully we will not be disappointed! 🤞

Celine Hooper Ya know whos pov i wanna see? KIERANS!

Lucie V. Celine wrote: "Ya know whos pov i wanna see? KIERANS!"

OMG.
YES, YES, YEEEESSSSSSSS TO THAT! I would be overjoyed. 🥲🥲

Kayla Zinsser If you look at Jen’s post it’s kind of a reread of fbaa but it’s also going to be very different! Poppy will go into stasis and it’s basically him going through memories to try and save her! So it will be both going back and moving the plot forward and I’m actually really excited to read it! I think nyktos and sera also have some pov moments too!!

Lucie V. Kayla wrote: "If you look at Jen’s post it’s kind of a reread of fbaa but it’s also going to be very different! Poppy will go into stasis and it’s basically him going through memories to try and save her! So it ..."

Yes I saw the description with the part where Poppy is in stasis. I will read it for sure, but I am just hoping that there is really a point to this book and that it will add to the series, that it's not just to drag it on for one more book...
I think I am still pissed because of the 8th book of the Zodiac Academy and how this series is just dragging on and on and now I'm afraid it's going to happen to this series too. 😅

Salma19 (And I Darken stan) Yes! I get you Lucie. I definitely would rather have a sequel than a retelling of a first book. I feel like with Midnight Sun’s success, this is becoming more popular.

Lucie V. I didn’t even try to read Midnight Sun. I was too annoyed with the idea of reading the same story all over again in Edward’s POV… and there is also the fact that I can’t stand Edward. 😅
At least I love Cas so there’s that. I guess we’ll see. I will probably either be pleasantly surprised or really pissed and disappointed. 😬😅

Haley Carnaghi reading this right now, it’s kind of a drag to be “rereading FBAA” i wanted new cas and poppy content together, not reading the same book with horny and sad cas inserted. idk i’m only 1/4th of the way through. skipping over a lottttt of pages as i go because i’m simply not interested in a re read

Lucie V. Yeah I don’t think I’ll be rereading FBAA before this one. I read it enough time to remember most of the plot and I’m afraid that I will enjoy book 5 less if I feel that it’s too repetitive. I might reread TWOTQ though since I only read it once, and just in case there are some connections/references to this book…

callmeEve I’ve just finished reading it and it’s LITERALLY his pov from the first book I’m so annoyed

Lucie V. Oh no that sucks! 😣
I was hoping that it would be something more than that… well, now I’m not in a hurry to buy it and read it at least 😅

Jennifer Hernandez Aww man i had a feeling this would happen she should have just done 3 books and it would have been great! I loved it. Now I’m so disappointed 😔

Lucie V. Jennifer wrote: "Aww man i had a feeling this would happen she should have just done 3 books and it would have been great! I loved it. Now I’m so disappointed 😔"

I haven't read it yet, so I don't know how disappointing it will be. I want to trust the author's process and give it a fair try, but I've seen very mixed reviews since yesterday so I really don't know what to expect... 😬

A Book Vacation Yep. The way Armentrout does it is pretty cool, but we could have just gone straight to the next book. Seems a bit like a money grab, but I'm only halfway thru. Maybe it does continue the story. Though I'm betting it will end with her waking and no new aspects of the plot.

I'll keep an eye out for your review and rating then. I am curious to know if it's really "useful" to the plot, or if it's just extra stuff from the first book...

message 40: by Amy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Amy I really want to see what he was thinking when Poppy and Tawny were whispering, when she asked him "was anything real?" while he was in prison, many see it as unnecessary, but there are many of us who really expected it, also he is not just a pov, he is telling the version of him while he tries to wake her up because a primal war is coming

Lucie V. Amy wrote: "I really want to see what he was thinking when Poppy and Tawny were whispering, when she asked him "was anything real?" while he was in prison, many see it as unnecessary, but there are many of us ..."

I know it takes palce after the 4th book and it allows us to see another, deeper side of him, and I haven't read it yet so I can't say if it's worth it or not. All I'm saying is that I am a little scared that I will end up being disappointed because it's a full-length novel so if it's only or almost only Cas' retelling of FBAA I feel that it's a little pointless for the plot... That I would have rather have the end of the series, and then this "extra" Cas' POV.

But again, I haven't read it yet so I can't give a real opinion on the book, and I don't want people to think that I am saying this is a bad book without even reading it.

Brenna Just finished this book. There is like....50 pages of new material, otherwise it's just book 1 from Cas's perspective. It was really annoying--especially because it ends on a cliffhanger.

Lucie V. Meh… that’s what I was afraid of.
I will still read it, but I’m not really in a hurry to do so. Especially if it ends with a cliffhanger…

Blair Warner It’s because a lot of people wanted his pov. They had a taste and asked for more.

Alyssa Crook Can someone tell me what chapter she wakes up so I can just skip the boring retelling parts?

message 46: by Amy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Amy I don't know if my opinion is very good, but today I started reading it and Cas's point of view excites me a lot, there is a lot of information from his version, I think many of us forget that although he shares life with Poppy, they do not share everything they have experienced , the narration focuses on the present but telling things from before they met and how he lived through the process, as well as what his life was like before they began to live it together as a couple, I have progressed a lot in reading and I liked it a lot so far. Cas was amazing, but with this I love him even more.

Lucie V. @Blair I get it, I want more of him too, but I will be frustrated if I read 600 pages and the plot does not progress. I want to know what happens after TWOTQ! 😅

Lucie V. @Amy thanks for sharing your opinion. It’s encouraging to see that some readers are enjoying this book! 😊
As I said in my previous comments, I’m the first in line to get more of Cas, but a part of me is also frustrated that this book is not a “true” 5th book and that the arc-plot probably doesn’t progress that much in it… 🤷🏼‍♀️
I guess I’ll see when I read it! 🙂

message 49: by Dorothy (new)

Dorothy Palmer This was my thought, i wanted the story to carry on, I didn't need a full recount of the story from Cas POV, not RN maybe after the series was finished.

Lucie V. Dorothy wrote: "This was my thought, i wanted the story to carry on, I didn't need a full recount of the story from Cas POV, not RN maybe after the series was finished."

Exactly! I'm all in for Cas' POV, just not in the middle of the series. Let's finish the series first, and then go back for the extra Cas. I really want to give this book a chance, but the reviews and comments I am seeing are not very encouraging. 😅
