Well, this review is going to be short, because I do not have much to say about this book sadly… I just want to clarify that I do not think this is a bad book, simply that it’s too long, and it should have been a novella instead of book #5 of the series.
They made it sound way more dramatic than it is.
After the final battle at the end of A War of Two Queens, Poppy falls into a stasis and will remain in it until she completes the culling. Nektas remembers Nyktos’ consort going through the same thing and suggests that Cas talks to her while she is in stasis to make sure that she remembers who she is, and who Cas is, once she wakes up. Cas decides to take Nektas’ advice and tells Poppy about when he first met her and learned to know her. So this is mostly a retelling of From Blood and Ash but from Cas’ point of view.
I have mixed feelings about this book.
On one hand, I really love Cas, Kieran, and Delano, and I was happy to get more of them. I also loved seeing Cas’ side of the budding romance between Poppy and him and seeing the conflicted feelings and the angst he was living with. Overall, he felt more vulnerable in this book, which made him more likable to me. The beginning and the ending of the book were also great, and now I am very excited for the next book to come out.
On the other hand, this felt way too long, many chapters felt pointless, and I feel that this might be a little bit of a money grab? The author better wrap up this series nicely and soon, because I am having flashbacks from the whole Zodiac Academy debacle here (if you made it to book 8 of the ZA series, you probably know what I’m talking about)… She keeps adding books to her series, and I am not sure I’m liking it, even though I love the series as a whole and the characters.
I did enjoy reading from Cas’ point of view, but I did find this book too long, and honestly, I was hoping for more backstory to be integrated into this book. I was super excited for a few chapters, like Poppy and Cas’ meeting at the Red Pearl, or when he sees her fighting for the first time on the rise, but most of the chapters were just a repetition of the events in FBAA from Cas’ point of view and they didn’t add much to the plot or the character. The dialogues between Cas and Poppy were the same, obviously, and the conversations between Cas and other characters, you know the new stuff that we didn’t read already in FBAA, were not that relevant or interesting. After 4 long books, we already know Cas quite well, so this book didn’t make me like him more, or discover a new side of him. I would have definitely enjoyed having a few of those chapters sold in a novella, or maybe as “bonus content” more than having to push myself through 630 pages of repetitive stuff. The fact that I already knew what would happen also made it harder for me to remain engaged and not skim the chapters that I found more boring.
There were a few chapters set in the present, meaning right after the events of The War of Two Queens, and I was happy to know what happened to Ires, Millie, and Malik. It was also good that Cas and Malik finally got some time to sit and talk, they needed it so much because there were so many conflicted feelings and so much tension and unease between them in The War of Two Queens. Overall though, those chapters represent only about 15% of the book: 10% at the beginning, and 5% here and there in between Cas’ remembering the events from the first book.

Only his memories can save her...

"“You know what I think?” I said.
“No. And I don’t want to know.”
Of course, that was a lie. “You like me.”
Again, Poppy couldn’t deny that. “Enough to be wildly inappropriate with me,” I pointed out. “On multiple occasions.”
“Good gods, I’d rather freeze to death at this point.”"

I am frustrated honestly... I feel like the author is just trying to find ways to make the series longer to justify selling more books. I would love to read Cas' POV once the adventure is over... Not in the middle of it, and not a full-length novel that rehashes the same story all over again... 😑😑
Then again, I was a little pissed when she decided to stop FBAA to write ASITE and I ended up totally loving Nyktos and Sera, so maybe this one will be a nice surprise too... 🤞
I guess we'll see in June... But that also means that we will not get book 6 until at least a year... 😭
Yeah, I trust her for sure, but I still feel like this is a way to justify/selling more books. Of course, we're going to read the 2 books before book 6 because of the order, but I just really hope to be pleasantly surprised as I was with ASITE because at the moment I am a little scared to be disappointed... I tend not to enjoy "retellings of the same book from another POV" that much... 🤞🤞
Hopefully it will be a nice surprise and it will make me regret ever complaining about it. 🤞🏼😅
I’m not rushing to read it if it’s just another POV but I will enjoy it when I do.
@Seeker_of_mostborns that could be an idea too 😅 I’ll see if my perfectionist side can live with having an incomplete physical series on my shelves. 🤷🏼♀️
Sorry, I misspelled your username and since I’m on my phone I can’t edit my previous comment. 😖
OMG I never received a notification for your comment!!
I'm glad to know that it will be more than just Cas' POV of the first books, that's reassuring. :)
Thanks for taking the time to clarify that!
Hey! I never received a notification for your comment either, I am so sorry!!
Thanks for taking the time to clarify that, it is definitely more encouraging to know that there will be new content too in this book! :)
Apparently there will be new content too, I will keep an open mind until I read the book... Hopefully we will not be disappointed! 🤞
OMG.
YES, YES, YEEEESSSSSSSS TO THAT! I would be overjoyed. 🥲🥲
Yes I saw the description with the part where Poppy is in stasis. I will read it for sure, but I am just hoping that there is really a point to this book and that it will add to the series, that it's not just to drag it on for one more book...
I think I am still pissed because of the 8th book of the Zodiac Academy and how this series is just dragging on and on and now I'm afraid it's going to happen to this series too. 😅
At least I love Cas so there’s that. I guess we’ll see. I will probably either be pleasantly surprised or really pissed and disappointed. 😬😅
I was hoping that it would be something more than that… well, now I’m not in a hurry to buy it and read it at least 😅
I haven't read it yet, so I don't know how disappointing it will be. I want to trust the author's process and give it a fair try, but I've seen very mixed reviews since yesterday so I really don't know what to expect... 😬
I'll keep an eye out for your review and rating then. I am curious to know if it's really "useful" to the plot, or if it's just extra stuff from the first book...
I know it takes palce after the 4th book and it allows us to see another, deeper side of him, and I haven't read it yet so I can't say if it's worth it or not. All I'm saying is that I am a little scared that I will end up being disappointed because it's a full-length novel so if it's only or almost only Cas' retelling of FBAA I feel that it's a little pointless for the plot... That I would have rather have the end of the series, and then this "extra" Cas' POV.
But again, I haven't read it yet so I can't give a real opinion on the book, and I don't want people to think that I am saying this is a bad book without even reading it.
I will still read it, but I’m not really in a hurry to do so. Especially if it ends with a cliffhanger…
As I said in my previous comments, I’m the first in line to get more of Cas, but a part of me is also frustrated that this book is not a “true” 5th book and that the arc-plot probably doesn’t progress that much in it… 🤷🏼♀️
I guess I’ll see when I read it! 🙂
Exactly! I'm all in for Cas' POV, just not in the middle of the series. Let's finish the series first, and then go back for the extra Cas. I really want to give this book a chance, but the reviews and comments I am seeing are not very encouraging. 😅
