really liked it

“Horrorstör” by Grady Hendrix has been a book I’ve been wanting to read for a while. I’ve read a handful of novels by Hendrix and I absolutely love his style of writing, horror, and the hilarious dark humor often found in everything he does. When it comes to Horrorstör, it’s simply put, a good time.

From the awesome graphic illustrations before each chapter and the whole story being around a retail furniture store, this book really hit home with me. I spent over 15 years working in retail electronics (Best Buy) and let me tell you, Hendrix hit the nail right on the head with how everything works behind the scenes. Even with the usual characters you’d find in retail, he did a fantastic job getting everything eerily accurate to what it’s like working in retail and the people/customers you deal with on a daily basis.

I’ve worked countless overnights and let me tell you, sometimes you do get a bit freaked out/chills down your spine when it’s 2:15 AM and you can hear a pin drop in a completely empty and quiet retail store. Especially when you start hearing the usual random noises throughout the night as I loved the authenticity of how Hendrix captured all that. I don’t know if he’s ever worked in retail or asked people that did but my goodness, combining that with all the crazy horror in this book was perfect.

I enjoyed all the characters, especially Amy, as she was totally relatable. I’ve met countless people working in retail and have known co-workers dealing with everything she does which made it feel so authentic. I had a lot of empathy with her and this made me connect with her character and why she did the things that she did.

Hendrix did a great job with lots of little references that made me smile from mentioning Best Buy, Lorraine Warren (I’m a huge fan of The Conjuring series), and capturing the essence of an IKEA store. LoL I’ve only shopped there twice in my life and let me tell you, that place has to be terrifying late at night in complete darkness.

As I kept reading Horrorstör, I truly loved all the solid layers of creepiness and how things got progressively scarier over time. Even the graphic illustrations reflected this and don’t worry, I won’t spoil anything for you but wow, things get wild! There is one horrific moment that was so intense and terrifying, I gladly enjoyed reading it several times because it was that epic.

For the most part, Horrorstör is an entertaining, awesome, and gruesome read. I thought it was a very unique look at what happens when a retail store closes at night and you’re dealt with scary events and situations. The atmospheric horror was brilliant and the only thing I didn’t like was the ending. Again, no spoilers here but I wanted things wrapped up for a perfect read from beginning to end. It left me wanting more as I wish things were settled, closed up, and one way or the other, complete.

I give “Horrorstör” by Grady Hendrix a 4/5 as it was everything I expected going into a novel written by one of the best horror authors out there today. The overall terror, tension, atmospheric horror, characters, and creepy setting in a retail furniture store were all top-notch. The only thing I didn’t like was the ending as I felt it didn’t make sense and wasn’t satisfying after such a crazy fun horror-filled ghost adventure. Either way, this was an awesome book and hit home with me being in a retail setting. I’d recommend this to anyone that loves horror and wants a unique take on what could happen when the lights go out late at night in an empty retail store that’s probably haunted.

preoccupiedbybooks Ah great review, I need to add some of this author's books! Would this be a good one to start with?

Rachel Martin Grady Hendrix is genius, I can't help but admire this piece of work. He's just a master at combining humour and creeps. Glad you enjoyed this, I loved it as well!

message 21: by LTJ (new) - rated it 4 stars

LTJ @preoccupied: Thanks, my friend! Oh yes, I love Grady Hendrix as you can really go with anything he's written. If I had to pick a good one to start off with "The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires" as that was an incredible one :-)

message 22: by LTJ (new) - rated it 4 stars

LTJ @Rachel: Hell yeah! I love his style of writing, dark humor, and his unique style of horror. It's all so brilliant and I agree, I plan to read everything he's written over time because he's that damn good. Thanks and also glad to hear you loved this book as well! Did you read How To Sell A Haunted House too?

Rachel Martin @LTJ yes! I did read How to Sell A Haunted House-- brilliant and creepy, with plenty of wit as is usual with his writing. If you haven't checked out his non-fiction book, Paperbacks from Hell, I think you might dig it! Hendrix offers awesome commentary on 70s/80s horror books which led to Valancourt Books to republish many of them with their original covers, mass market paperback and all. His writing is definitely influenced by the style of horror during that time period.

Thanks ☺️

message 25: by LTJ (new) - rated it 4 stars

LTJ @Rachel" Awesome! LoL I also very much loved that one, it felt like a modern Child's Play, eh? LoL wow, funny you mention that, I do have Paperbacks from Hell on my TBR to read in April! I wanted to ask you, is this like a real book or more like a book with graphics/thoughts on all the classic horror novels of the past? I bought it regardless but would love to know, please :-)

message 26: by LTJ (new) - rated it 4 stars

LTJ @preoccupied: Anytime, my friend!

Rachel Martin @LTJ Yes!! That's a perfect way to describe How to Sell A Haunted House!! Paperbacks from Hell is more pictures/thoughts but definitely cool as hell. I've even bought a couple of the books mentioned inside. I think it's a staple for any horror book lover and I think you'll enjoy it!

Dona's Books Love your review LTJ! This is one of my favorite books, but I agree the ending wiggles. Glad you loved this awesome atmospheric classic!💜

message 29: by LTJ (new) - rated it 4 stars

LTJ @Rachel: Thanks and hell yeah! LoL I got immediate Chucky vibes but on a whole other level! Thanks for your insight on Paperbacks from Hell as it's on my April TBR so I'm excited to finally get into it. I've read a bunch of those classics while growing up so the nostalgia will be real :-)

Jennifer Agree with everything you said ! He is such a good author. I am currently reading Final Girls Support Group.

message 31: by LTJ (new) - rated it 4 stars

LTJ @Dona: Thank you so much for the kind words, my friend! LoL yeah, I love your phrase there that the ending "wiggles" as that's exactly how I felt. I truly wish it was just a normal ending instead of leaving it the way that it was as now who even knows? Aside from that, a brilliant read :-)

message 32: by LTJ (new) - rated it 4 stars

LTJ @Jennifer: Thanks, my friend! Hell yeah, Hendrix is amazing and enjoy! I also loved Final Girls Support Group :-D

message 33: by Marg (new)

Marg Casey usually don't like horror, but that cover and your review makes me want to read it. Thought the cover was an IKEA catalog at first glance - is Satire Horror a genre?!

message 34: by LTJ (new) - rated it 4 stars

LTJ @Marg: Thanks for the kind words, my friend! LOL yeah, I read the e-book of this but friends with the physical book said it literally looks like an IKEA catalog so that must have been awesome to read it that way. Yeah, I'd say Satire Horror would be a subgenre for sure!

Creya Casale | cc.shelflove Did you read We Sold Our Souls? It was awesome. He references all the good bands. \m/

message 36: by LTJ (new) - rated it 4 stars

LTJ @Creya: Not yet but funny enough, that's the next book I'm reading as I love Grady Hendrix! Ohhhhhhh, I can't wait! Are you a fellow metalhead? \m/

Brittany McCann Spot on commentary on the brilliance of the layers of the story! Great review

message 38: by LTJ (new) - rated it 4 stars

LTJ @Brittany: Thank you as always, my friend! Hell yeah, this was such a wild and fun read :-D

I'm glad to see you also enjoyed it, yay!

Alfred I really enjoyed the beginning, which I found really clever, but after a while it stopped being funny/scary and became just scary/scary. It was a bit too much for me. But

message 40: by LTJ (new) - rated it 4 stars

LTJ @Alfred: Ah, I see and that's understandable! I hope your next read is much better :-)

message 41: by Fria (new) - rated it 5 stars

Fria Hiemstra Which one was the horrific moment? I felt like that with My Best Friend's Exorcism

message 42: by LTJ (new) - rated it 4 stars

LTJ @Fria: I remember it was towards the second half of the novel, and it involved certain parts of the store. I'll leave it at that :-)
