** spoiler alert ** Do I think a Casteel POV of events that happened in book 1 was necessary? No.

Did I like the book? It was okay but I had a few problems with it.

I saw Casteel in a new light, and it wasn't necessarily a good one.

What I loved:
✅ Ires meeting Poppy
✅ Casteel shifting

What I didn't love:
❌ Too much focus on Casteel's previous sex life
❌ Minimal background on Cas' captivity
❌ Little to no progress on current plot

From the teasers and other posts that Jennifer released on her FB group about ASOAAB, it seemed like this book wasn't going to simply be a rehashing of events from Book 1, it would also deal with the trauma Casteel went through during his time as Isbeth's captive.

Unfortunately, this was only touched on very lightly and did not delve any deeper than surface level. Instead, the trauma was used as an excuse for Casteel to become a manwhore for all intents and purposes and it all boiled down to having the choice to fuck whomever he wanted.

I honestly found this baffling. I understand that people deal with trauma differently, but I really would have preferred if Jennifer would have come at this from a different angle and really got into the nitty gritty of his trauma. I think it would have made for a darker read and given us better look at Casteel's character.

A lot of page time was devoted to Casteel's past and current escapades and his prowess in the bedroom and how his good looks got him laid quite easily. Now, while we don't have actual scenes of Cas being intimate with anyone other than Poppy, I could have honestly done without it. It had been alluded to in previous books but actually having to read about it, I just didn't need it.

The scenes with Britta ground my gears somewhat but I got that they were necessary; I was kind of shocked that Casteel was contemplating fucking her when the opportunity had presented itself even though a few chapters earlier he had made it clear in his mind that he wasn't interested in going down that road any longer. This gave me the ick considering the visceral reactions he had been having to Poppy.

I also didn't really care for his thoughts on his own shock at not wanting to have casual sexual encounters with people. Again, his shock at not wanting to join in with Kieran when he was fucking a descenter named Circe (whom Casteel had already been with perviously) this scene went into graphic detail and again it was not something I wanted to read about.

The focus on sex in this book and it not being with the FMC just didn't sit right with me. I know it is crazy that I am saying this as I love smut but for this story that we have been following for 4 books so far, did we really need this? As I said, I saw Cas in a new light and I didn't like what I saw.

It is clear to me now that Jennifer is setting up the final book for either a committed Poly relationship between Cas, Poppy & Kieran or at the very least a casual fucking relationship between all three and I am not here for it.

This series made no intimations or mentions of this kind of relationship until book 4. If it had been part of the series when it started, I wouldn't have minded but Jennifer included Heartmates in this world and I fail to see why this was included if the mates in question will be opening up the relationship.. it makes a mockery of the whole fated-mates trope, surely?

This is further alluded to when Cas shifts into a cave cat and recognises Kieran as his saying "mine". whereas with Emil, he just wanted to kill him.

The "Present" chapters bar the beginning of the book and the very end of the book held no information of any interest to progress the current plot forward. The remaining present chapters contained a monologue of how Casteel and Kieran digested certain times in the past with Poppy. We dd see a quick drop in by Millicent and Malik but again, very minimal information was given here.

The only thing that I really loved was the meeting between Ires and Poppy - that was beautiful, albeit short lived, but a great scene full of emotion.

To be brutally honest, it was rinse and repeat throughout this book; a complete regurgitation of what happened in book 1; it was both monotonous and fatiguing to read.

Verdict: There was no need for a book from Casteel's POV. I wish we could have gotten the next F&F book and then finish Poppy's story next year. I wouldn't bother with this book if I didn't have to but the author has put crucial information at the beginning and end of the book that you need to know before diving into The Primal of Blood and Bone. I really don't like when authors do this as it feels like a cash grab.

Margaret Loves 2 Read FINALLY, the details and insight I’ve been waiting for. Thank you for this review; it’s answered basically all of my questions about whether or not I want to invest time and energy into this book.

Thanks! I honestly felt annoyed when reading this.

Look, this should have been a novella or a bonus that you got as an incentive for the next book. It was unfair to market this as the 5th book in the series and then justifying it by throwing in a few chapters from the present, most of which told us nothing.

I think Jennifer has done a disservice to the fans in this one and I think it was most definitely a cash grab too.

Shredder I was so excited about this series but I have been losing interest from book3 onwards. I was kinda expecting this book to be meh as well, and your review solidified my belief on the series. It’s a drop for me.

Clarice Great review! I dnf'd this series after book 4, as I was not comfortable with the whole Kieran situation, it just seems like Cas and Poppy were using him rather than being interested in having a dedicated relationship with him. Tbh JLA needed to commit to this being an MMF or a reverse Harem earlier on in this series or to have at least built up to it.

As this series is one of those YA/NA abominations currently circling out there, I don't think JLA feels comfortable making this an MMF as that type of relationship is not common at all in YA or even NA. Her audience may not react well to it. Based off of Cas/Kieran's past relationship this would make the most sense to me though.

JLA is one of those authors that doesn't listen to her characters when she's writing nor does she plan out her series in advance. All of this makes her series as they go on to feel drawn out and overall disharmonious feeling. Like characters don't stay in character from book to book. They just do what she wants them to do, whether it makes sense or not.

Thanks! I agree. I felt that there were so many times where they got so caught up in one another and Kieran was like the doll they took off the shelf to play with every now and then.

There was definitely some major fence sitting on Jen's part when people were losing their minds over whether or not the "Joining" would be sexual. I was honestly surprised she went down that route but even that "scene" was muddled like it couldn't decide if it would be a full on threesome or not.

Either start with an RH or Poly vibe from the beginning or don't do it. If there was even a hint of it being a possibility early on, I would've been ok with it. But I just don't get why Jennifer made such a big deal about Heartmates and then shat all over it with adding Kieran into their dynamic...

Tbh I feel like Kieran and Tawny are in the same roles and I have only just realised since the last book how fucking marginalised they actually are. I wish they had as much of a back story and life like other characters that imo are minor compared to them.

Idk if you ever read her Lux/Origin series, but I am STILL waiting for Fevered Winter - I need a satisfying conclusion to Luc and Evie's story! and yet she can phone this type of non story book in!

You're not missing much!

I fell in love with the first 2 books and then book 3 kinda went downhill for me. There was a lot filler until the last few chapters.

I think releasing a retelling from Cas' POV this far into the series when it is nearly finished, was an odd choice to make. I would rather just wait for The Primal of Blood and Bone to come out than read this and call it book 5 in the series...

I think you hit the nail on the head that this book was written for money reasons. No way some one writes a 636 page, pretty much novella, just because they really like the story/characters.

I get really upset with authors not finishing a series, it sucks for the fans. There have been a few authors that I previously liked that have done this. I haven't read her other books, but it sucks that she didn't finish that series. It also sucks how money and notoriety can change writers.

Prue Marie Excellent review. I agree with everything you said. I’m not interested in seeing a poly relationship I signed up for heartmates stuff. Kieran seemed to genuinely dislike her initially and only put up with because of Cas. There’s too many changes being made to the story as it goes.

Thanks!

I noticed in TWOTQ that Casteel was relieved when Poppy okay'd the joining to be of a sexual nature. So clearly he prefers sharing women with Kieran or he has previously been intimate with him and that's what he wants going forward.

To be honest, it was confirmed more or less in this book when Cas knew how hard Kieran could f*ck and imagining Poppy with the two of them.

If you are going to wax poetic about Heartmates and how unique they are, why would you then lessen it by adding someone else into the mix?

I completely agree with you re Kieran disliking Poppy. That is the way he came across to me too, until TWOTQ where he did a 360. I thought it was just his personality, but the dynamic between them all changed in TWOTQ.

I just think all of this should have been established early on in the series instead near the end...

Rachelle You said it perfectly. Yes to all of this.
