***Spoiler below***
Scotland 1545. I liked the first half (parts exciting) better
than the second. This had potential. This had sex scenes.
Gave this 2.5 stars.
Rane was huntsman for nobleman/ sheriff Lord Gilbert.
Florie, an apprentice to a goldsmith, traveled to a village
fair to sell her jewelry. Escorted by her foster father's
servant, brawny Wat. (Foster father drank too much
after his wife died). Wat by mistake sold Mavis, Lady
Gilbert, a pc, not for sale. Florie took back the pomander
& returned Mavis her coins. That jewelry pc. was Florie's
only connection to her natural sire.
Florie ran away & the sheriff's men gave chase. Rane
accidently shot Florie with an arrow. He later bragged
of his weapon prowess. He helped her reach an old,
abandoned, & reportedly cursed church. Rane found
blind priest, Father Conan, in his small cottage. Conan
alone, heard Florie's confession & gave her sanctuary.
His character was the best part of the story for me.
Evil personified Mavis ruined the story for me. Why
dwell on evil & too much drama?
Ladies man Rane had a Scottish Mum and a sire with
Viking ancestry. Too many times readers heard
"Viking arms, Viking shoulders, untamed Viking,
Thor's hammer" etc. Could he somehow have a
Viking connection? Sorry, repetition is boring to me.
