Great-Uncle Josiah, a duke in ill-health, summoned his nephew (an earl) & his nephew's offspring in their 20's: Lucien (a viscount), Lady Emily & Lady Isabel to his country estate. All 3 sibs were low on funds. Lady Em had had a scandal not of her making & received push-back. Josiah also invited his heir, Gavin Waring, the new Marquess of Athstone, discovered farming in Baltimore. Gavin was greatly underestimated. The most interesting of the bunch.
Lady Isabel was reunited w/ her estranged spouse Max. Emily and Gav created sparks. Luc wanted to wait but found love. These couples had a fair amt of push-pull w/ each other. They acted too intense at times and I wanted to say "just breathe."...more

Surrey, then London 1819. 2.5 stars.
I liked Sebastion as the brother in bk #1 of this series. This had too much drama and love too-soon. Seb was intrigued by Hermoine. Much later Seb saw Hermione do something odd & he followed her.
Hermione carried too much responsibility for her family who resided in the country. Her witchy aunty sponsored a season for her in London. Aunty suggested a scheme. Aunty needed a rubber room. The FMC's younger bro needed a time-out in the worst way.
Sorry IMO this was a let-down. Seb was more mature than this story indicated. Intelligent Seb needed to piece together the clues his beloved gave him over and over. MCs deserved a better story.
One positive : we saw Emmaline & Drake & they learned of a 2nd baby....more

We met huge in physique, Quinton Cameron. Laird Cameron/ earl /warrior. He was duped when in love with a beauty, Mary Ross, who sought a titled man before Quint rec'd his title. Mary wed a man old enough to be her Grandsire, instead.
We met Deirdre Chattan, dtr of another Laird, who banished her to an abbey. Because a man charmed, seduced, & promised her and then abandoned her.
The MCs had met before. This time their chemistry set them on fire. He called her hellion & made her no promises. Eventually he named her his mistress. She disliked this & wanted respect. She said time and again she had choices, but did she? A person, as faux Queen Joan, sent Deirdre a missive, offered her shelter & an assignment in the Queen's court. Dee left Quint's castle.
We saw the stubbornness of both MCs. Deirdre was a beauty in face/ form, and men lusted after her. Once returned to Quint he confided he had a dead heart and could offer her no affection. But their sex-play was mutually enjoyed.
Her choices: return to her sire or the abbey? stay w/ Quint who'd never love her? No good choices for her. She confided to the H she loved Quinton the man, but needed to learn patience w/ Quinton the earl....more

Medieval w/ sex scenes. This couple Egan & Glenda argued constantly & exchanged cruel remarks. They acted like sex would paper over their animosity & distrust.
Glenda lived in the Highlands x 8 years & wanted to return to her castle in the Lowlands. She & Niall were married for 5 years & he died a violent death. For 3 yrs afterward she lived w/ Laird of MacKay clan, Cameron (Niall's bro.) & his wife Meredith. Glenda perseverated on Niall's memory-enough already! She didn't need to insult most men in comparison to her late beloved.
Cam selected Egan to escort Glenda to her castle. They discovered it in ill-repair and her troops fled. And a band of bad men terrorized the area nr Glenda's castle.
This required suspension of disbelief. The mystery aspect: too obvious. The love story- felt lacking. Difficult to like a story where the MCs were unlikeable human beings. I tried to find their personal strengths. Genuine gratitude should have been their goal. I'm surprised I finished this.

Wealthy, beyond handsome 33YO Isaac seemed fixated on ways of the flesh. He wanted to seduce beautiful women & then cut them loose. He focused on beautiful governess next door, Abigail. He made inappropriate comments to her and tried to get her alone. He sensed mutual lust. Abby knew she was 'on the shelf' at age 29.
Abigail's late mother indulged in indiscretions. Abby's choices 1) stay a virgin 2) become a mistress 3) become a wife. Either of the last two might provide her w/ a child, her secret dream. Isaac claimed he loved her midway in the story- a convenient line? Did he understand love? Abby vacillated on her emotions, especially related to her choices. She spotted Isaac as manipulative.
Abby's charge Cathy had long-term recovery (cognition & comprehension) from a previous head injury & Isaac's niece/ward Letty had a current head injury. Isaac convinced Abby's employer to allow her, Cathy & his aunt travel to the countryside to help Letty better adjust to her circum- stances.
Abby's brother & 2 other men in the story had a menacing demeanor. Why? Abby's brother changed in personality, why? Readers remained in the dark on him.

The Earl of Alvington controlled his son Neville (who later became earl,) portrayed all along as a spineless liar & secret keeper. Neville never wanted to be a father. Neville's heir/ viscount son Anthony saw through smoke & mirrors and valued the truth. So 3 generations of men in one family.
Had positive aspects: * great characters, especially Rev. Theo Somerby, his wife Amanda & offspring James and Helen. They were the moral compass of the story. * several couples fell in love. * a taste of how folks lived in that era.
Had not so good aspects: * several men were attracted to unspoiled Helen, but one made a pest of himself. * beautiful, catty & at times cruel Cynthia needed to get over herself. * one oily man was out for revenge. * several characters speculated: why did Neville the earl hire his friend's secretary Bertram to make discreet inquiries in Sussex? This became a repeat-fest of info.

Charity was filled with anger and sorrow. And acted a bit of a shrew like her mother. A couple yrs. back she expected Simon to propose & he wed someone else instead. Villagers treated opinionated and too blunt Charity like a pariah. Her mom demonstrated her spendthrift ways and dad made bad investments. Mom wanted her to marry Mr. Honeyfield, an older lecher-type w/ poor hygiene. But he had some funds.
Charity met Navy Lt. Thomas Callahan, who was on shore leave. They danced at an assembly. (Thomas stayed w/ a Navy man & his wife.) Thomas had wit and dimples. The heroine considered Thomas too glib & thought he mocked her, so she insulted him. Called him the "village idiot" and a fake. Later she brought him a freshly baked fruitcake and an apology.
Charity reflected on her past/ present bad behavior & made genuine amends to several people of the village.
This had great dialogue, admiration which grew into love, forgiveness and humor. If you had a different perception of this story, that's OK too....more

Rane was huntsman for nobleman/ sheriff Lord Gilbert. Florie, an apprentice to a goldsmith, traveled to a village fair to sell her jewelry. Escorted by her foster father's servant, brawny Wat. (Foster father drank too much after his wife died). Wat by mistake sold Mavis, Lady Gilbert, a pc, not for sale. Florie took back the pomander & returned Mavis her coins. That jewelry pc. was Florie's only connection to her natural sire.
Florie ran away & the sheriff's men gave chase. Rane accidently shot Florie with an arrow. He later bragged of his weapon prowess. He helped her reach an old, abandoned, & reportedly cursed church. Rane found blind priest, Father Conan, in his small cottage. Conan alone, heard Florie's confession & gave her sanctuary. His character was the best part of the story for me.
Evil personified Mavis ruined the story for me. Why dwell on evil & too much drama?
Ladies man Rane had a Scottish Mum and a sire with Viking ancestry. Too many times readers heard "Viking arms, Viking shoulders, untamed Viking, Thor's hammer" etc. Could he somehow have a Viking connection? Sorry, repetition is boring to me....more

1) Gentle Warrior -mediThis contained 3 books by the same author. The late Julie Garwood wrote some great romances, but not so much on the following.
1) Gentle Warrior -medieval. Gave this 3.5 stars. Lady Elizabeth was treated like a boy by her sire IE taught to ride a horse & to use a bow & arrow. And had a pet hawk, 2 wolfhounds, & served as healer. She wanted personal revenge for the death of her sire & sisters. She made unwise decisions (almost TSTL) but had good intentions.
She wed a baron, Lord Geoffrey, a too-serious warrior, who lectured her IE stay inside the castle walls, know your place etc. Geoff verbally abused her, shook her, pulled her hair; bodice ripper behavior. She felt he was too slow at find- ing the murderer of her family & she thought SHE knew.
2) Honour's Splendor- medieval. 2 stars. Lady Madelyne saved a baron, Duncan, from her baddie half-brother. Who planned for Duncan to freeze to death. She feared horses & claimed to never lie and to be a "good, gentle lady." The moody MCs argued too often and seemed to have the same convo. over & over. Their back/ forth insults 'cut to the bone.' Why the drama? She sought validation by others, but spoke too harshly to almost everyone.
Was is necessary for readers to know half-brother was a 'special friend' of the king & lusted after sister?
3) Lion's Lady- Regency. Finished Ch 12 & then DNF. Beautiful Christina was raised by a Native American couple. Fast forward to Boston, then England. Her greedy countess/ aunt/ guardian x 1 year ran out of money & now wanted all of niece's inheritance. Lyon, a marquess, met the beauty and then nearly stalked her. The beauty proposed to Lyon. Who'd want grumpy immature, former spy, Lyon? I liked his bestie better. Sorry, not my cup of tea.
4) books #1 and 2 had similar elements. Elizabeth saved 1 warrior & Madelyne saved 2. Mad feared horses, had no survival skills & a thrown to- gether map & planned to seek refuge w/ her female cous in Scotland. Huh? Both women cried too often. Both chided spouse b/c the warrior wouldn't share w/ wife his military strategy- huh? Both men were obsessed warriors who never smiled or joked. Both men showed authority by placing their hands on their hips. Enough already! Both lectured their wives and/ or broke her spirit. Both wives contradicted the warrior in front of his men-uncool. These themes seemed too much the same.
5) All 3 heroes were huge men with huge chests and shoulders etc. And huge egos to match.
6) IMO much better books by this author: The Wedding, The Bride, the Secret. The last one I've read several times.

Isaac was the harbormaster. He provided a good life for his wife + 2 pretty dtrs Rebecca (heroine) & younger dtr. Sarah. Becky loved cooper, Tom Mason, who supported his widowed mother, sis Hetty (Becky's BFF) & 2 bros. Becky's Da made clear, once Tom could afford to rent a cabin (he & fam dwelled in a tenement) he could court & wed Becky. Sarah favored Misha, a sailor of Russian heritage.
Isaac invited widowed Capt. Adam Bradley, owner of 3 ships, to his home for dinner. She acted rude toward him from the jump. Becky showed her smart + spoiled ways. Adam felt 'love at first sight.' Adam told Isaac he wanted to court Becky-but he learned her heart was otherwise engaged.
About the 40% mark, I wanted Becky erased from the story & almost DNF. She thought she knew everything. Becky defied her Da and saw Tom on the sly.
Long story short, eventually Adam (about 11 yrs her senior) + Becky wed, but she left out some vital info. They had too many shouting matches, when he wasn't at sea. Someone sabotaged one of his ships. The thing RE the hand seemed unnecessary-the MD monitored this daily. The MCs had another MD available for a 2nd opinion-but passed on this. Some of the twists/ turns seemed like Job from the Bible or 'hard times for these times' from Dickens.
It ticks me off, in a story, when good guys don't report bad guy(s) to the magistrate in a timely manner. This had grammar & spelling errors. IE Tom was of "Gipsy" ancestry.

Lady Dorothy "Dottie," when a girl, was caught in a fire with her countess mother, who died. Beautiful Dorothy had scars on her face and hands. Some people ran away when they saw her. Dottie wore hats inside and outside to partially cover her face.
Dottie & Lady Anne, cousins, felt close like sisters. Dottie, her sire, Lord Forbes, & her brother all arrived in London for Anne's wedding to good man Ralph. Anne's mom perseverated on wealthy Ralph's non-peer status. Why repetitive verbal digs?
Richard's mom pressured him to marry bold, selfish Lady Sally, a childhood friend. Sally coveted his duke status. He showed his disinterest in courting her, but she ignored his words and hints.
Ralph & Richard were besties. When Richard met shy Dottie, he caused a faux pas & apologized profusely. These MCs genuinely became fond of each other.
An evil person demonstrated evilness & "faced the music."
The author needed more adherence to era rules IE 1st called a woman a former duchess, rather than dowager duchess, said Richard needed permission of the Crown on who he could marry (huh?, this was not the middle ages) & claimed a single couple who danced together twice in one evening would be expected to announce their engagement (untrue). Needed editing IE typos, words squashed together....more

Felicity wrote as society columnist "Lord X" & she used sarcasm and venom. Ian, a viscount, subjected to few unflattering columns by Lord X, followed a newspaper courier to the source and discovered Felicity as the culprit! From his POV, he believed she misrepresented him in the paper, but he found her an intelligent beauty.
Felicity thought Ian too secretive. Ian, a former spy for Wellington, met her 6 yr old triplet brothers & studious bro. of 12. Felicity assumed b/c Ian was a peer, he never served in the war effort. Ian had Spanish ancestry on his mother's side & called Felicity "querida" after he fell for her.
Despite the rumors, Ian couldn't accurately be called a rake. MCs used humor & rancor, ignored each other, & created too much angst. They used sex almost as a weapon: would/ wouldn't they consummate their marriage? Ironic b/c they enjoyed the time they 'anticipated' their vows.
The last will of Ian's deceased sire was silly & I doubt it would've stood up in court. If the hero on the cover had olive skin or 'midnight eyes,' then the artist needed an eye exam.

Beautiful Lenora recently had a 3rd canceled wedding, not of her choice. She became fixated on her first intended Hillram who died a few yrs back. We felt her guilt. She & bestie, widowed Margaret, traveled to the Isle of Synne to visit Margery's Grandma, Lady Tesh. Lenora's harsh sire gave her till the end of summer to find a mate or he'd find one for her.
Peter visited Lady T first, then the 2 besties did. The MCs literally ran into each other. Peter acted abrasive, rude & angry. He didn't think the 2 persons he targeted w/ his hate, capable of change. Was Peter capable of change? Peter wanted revenge-readers received this message loud & clear & too often. Lenora, in her mind, called tall, blonde of hair & beard, Peter "the Viking" over and over.

This had two couples. Oliver was on the cusp of proposing to Victoria. Her family experienced 'dun territory' & needed an infusion of funds Oliver could supply. Victoria was crazy in love w/ Elijah who served as a low-paying secretary with ambitions to run for MP. Oliver & Sophie met at a ball 5 yrs prior & seemed compatible. But his parents (Mina+ Simon) clashed w/ Sophie's mom, Susannah, (with just cause) & told him to cut the connection w/ Sophie. Whew!
The Nelson family hosted the aforementioned people at a month long house party. Several folks shared unsolicited verbal digs: Susannah, Hettie, Phyllis & Allen. Two played a cruel joke on the hero's sister. At 1 point witchy Susannah made a play for (30 yrs her junior) our hero Oliver!

Oscar, a celibate, reformed rake & earl was sweet on Lady Emily, dtr of a duke. Emily studied ferns. These 2 fell in an abandoned mine shaft while fern-hunting. They were rescued the next AM, but many considered them compromised.
Oscar had a persona of a faux rake for the last 5 yrs, prior to that he was the genuine article. About 10 yrs ago he had sex w/ an experienced young woman. She became preggers and he refused to marry her. He responded w/ what we call nowadays slut-shaming.
Oscar quietly did a few things to redeem himself. He also quietly worked on social legislation in the House of Lords to reduce or eliminate the use of kids as "chimney sweeps" & so on.
'Madame X' shared slanted, nasty rumors about Oscar & Emily with a newspaper. Oscar & Em decided on a faux engagement and then soon after a small wedding b/c her sister would soon have her first season. Em insisted on these marriage conditions: they'd have children but also lead separate lives & she'd continue her fern studies. She had a secret-natch.
Oscar spent most days away from home on House of Lords business or at his club. Em felt rejected: they seldom ate meals together either. Em wanted it both ways: separate lives but also to enjoy each other's company. But sex they enjoyed nightly & afternoon delight for variety. IMO the leads needed to stop the 2nd guessing and anger toward each other & stop the secrecy. Talk to each other & don't assume!

The 3rd mate of West, Zack, asked to allow his sister Sara (wrongly sus- spected of murder) to travel on H's whaler ship. Permission granted. West & Sara each engaged in too much internal rumination.
West had Sara pose as his new wife & share quarters on the whaler, with her using the smaller of the 2 beds. West acted angry & rude toward her b/c of his sexual frustration. This went on for 6 mos. Montana & Will, in their teens, saw their fathers killed by a 'hired gun' for the railroad. In 1894, 14 yrs on, Montana traveled to claim a farm property deeded to him by an old family friend.
