Okay, where do I begin?

I have to admit first that I am going to be an outlier here. You probably could tell by my 3 star rating, right? But you have a right to know why. So, I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to tell you why.

I didn’t include this book in my “currently reading” when I received it several weeks ago. Probably because I wasn’t convinced, I wanted to read it.

I felt some level of excitement about receiving it as a donation to my Little Free Library Shed, because I knew my neighbors would be thrilled about having it available to them because this book is on the “hotlist” at our local public library. Which means if you are interested in reading this book, you are probably #467 on the list before the book will be available for you to check out from our library. That is how popular this book is right now.

Also, every time I receive a donation of a Kristin Hannah book, it comes and goes almost as fast as any Petersen, Connelly, Grisham, Picoult, or Baldacci book.

But I am not always a Kristin Hannah fan. And, the subject matter of this book, is not my favorite, so I wasn’t particularly anxious about reading this book.

So, when it was donated, I wasn’t all happy hooray ready about entering the pages.

Which leads me back to again why it wasn’t on my “currently reading” list of books here.

Thus, it took me awhile to make a decision to read it. Are you still wondering if I am going to offer a review? Thank you, if you are still reading this!

When I finally did begin to read, it wasn’t a nostalgia I was necessarily happy to return home to, as this book is filled with… despair – addiction – war – disrespect to soldiers – inadequate training for them – snipers – PTSD – Agent Orange.

Yes, the author does a somewhat convincing job of creating the historical scenery descriptions by taking us back to Viet Nam.

But her writing wasn’t connecting me to her story. It wasn’t capturing me. It wasn’t holding me. I didn’t feel emotionally vested.

I felt as a reader we were awkwardly stumbling a long trying to keep up. The plot twists seemed so strained. I just didn’t feel as engaged as I would have liked to have been.

The only thing that seemed to feel somewhat genuine was the way Hannah included women in the experience, especially nurses. Through her writing, she tried to show, their conviction and importance to the war story. Women – the real, unsung heroes. And since that was the title of her book, perhaps the author’s passion was met. As she shared in her author’s note, she was honored to tell their story. It just didn’t work for me.

Jayme I’ve seen a few reviews from disappointed readers! Hope your next book is more satisfying!

Deanna Loves to Read!!:) Fantastic review Karen! I have never read this author . Probably because I always seem to be disappointed in the hype. I was thinking of reading Nightingale by her as the synopsis really appeals. Have you read that? Thoughts? Thanks!!

TL Well said 👏

I get it. Hype is so frustrating, isn't it? Sometimes that is what it takes, doesn't it...a good synopsis...a subject matter that will appeal Deanna. Thank you. ☺️

Julia i couldn't have said it better. i completely agree with you. it was too much of a love story for me. the main character annoyed me. i also wanted to know more of the history, which i didn't get.

Thank you so much Julia for your comments and thoughts. I appreciate them tremendously. 🙂

✯~IRENA~✯ I started out on a waiting list at #609 and I'm now around #300 in line. I don't think it's even going to come close to the Nightingale which was a book she wrote about women helping behind the scenes in WWII. Hannah is hit or miss for me as well. I'll keep my place in line but I have a feeling I will agree with you when I finally get it. I don't have high hopes for it. Thanks for your review, Karen!

You are so welcome Irena. I look forward to your thoughts when you do have a chance to read it. 🙂

Marijke Carson I am wondering how I will feel about this book once I read it. I am often put off by modern hype over books. And I, too, am hit or miss with Hannah. Absolutely loved Nightingale, but have been so-so about others. Thanks for a great review!

Srivalli Rekha A couple of my friends weren't impressed by the book, so I understand your hesitation. Sorry this was just an okay read.

Chris Cox, a librarian At our library, I saw how many holds we had on this one and I called our collection development person and asked her if she had seen the number of holds on this book. (She had, of course). I knew this author was popular but I’ve never seen one of her books be this popular!

I appreciate your insight into it. It sounds like the author’s intentions are admirable, but execution is another matter.

Lorna A great review for all of us outliers, Karen. I read one of Kristin Hannah’s first books and I haven’t read anything by her since because of the reasons you have cited here. 😉

Sujoya - theoverbookedbibliophile I agree with your assessment. Great review, Karen!😊

Thank you so much for your kind thoughts, Lorna. I can appreciate your feelings, completely. I think this is it for me. 🙏

Thank you so much Sujoya. 🙂I loved your conclusions, as well.

Canadian Jen It happens, Karen. If you can't connect that can make or break the story for a reader. I get it. This one did work for me however, I'm not an earlier reader of Hannah's. A fair review.

With my mental health at the moment, will be skipping this one.

Carolyn I’m on the fence on whether to read this one but I’m guessing my thoughts would align with yours. The Four Winds frustrated and annoyed me, and I said I was done with this author after that. But many friends have loved this one. So I may try it at some point. Great review!

I also felt similarly about The Four Winds. And that was another reason I wasn't too excited about entering into another Hannah book...besides the subject matter of this one. And for any of us who have lived through the Viet Nam war (me), I really wasn't sure I wanted to go there again. So, I feel your hesitancy. But if you do go there, Carolyn, I will be interested in your feelings about your reading experience...🙂

Keri Stone I’ve held off reading this one also. I do think I’d like reading the women’s perspective, which is one not told often enough. But not sure the rest is something I want to tackle, especially if it’s not done something I’ll connect with. I think I’ll hold off… appreciate your perspective

message 31: by David (new)

David Eppenstein I haven’t read this as yet and may never read but I am sorry that it affected you this way Karen. Unfortunately, history can be ugly and a lot of other unpleasant things but we need to read them so we can learn from them and not repeat them. I have read a lot of such histories and the ones that affect me in the manner this book affect you are the histories of our Indian wars in the West, the Irish history in their fight against England, and almost the entirety of English colonial history. The author’s choice of giving us the experiences of women in such a turbulent and horrific time and war is a matter of curiosity for me that may have me picking up this book at some point but I can’t say when. I have had my fill of ugly histories for a while and prefer something a bit more uplifting as the batteries need refreshing. If all the history you read is upbeat then you are probably reading the wrong histories but keep reading regardless.

Angela M Sorry it didn’t work,Karen.

Rosh ~catching up slowly~ I was an even bigger outlier than you, as you saw. :D I haven't read any other book by this author, but if all of them are written the way this one was, I doubt I'll ever be a fan. Welcome to Outlier Island, Karen! ;)

Thank you for your comments Keri. And I agree, a woman's perspective is always appreciated. I think we have to look at every story we venture in to for why we choose to read it. 🙂

I read a lot of historical fiction, David. Like The Liar by Mitch Albom. I appreciate it. But the storyteller has to be credible. This one for me was not. That makes the difference, too. Thank you for your comments. I appreciate them. 🙂

Debbie Y I can always trust your honest and captivating reviews, Karen, thank you! I’m sorry this wasn’t quite as good as you hoped. I did like The Great Alone by her, but might sit this one out. ☺️

Thank you Debbie. I appreciate that you liked The Great Alone. That one wasn't one I liked either. So, I am not batting 100 here with her. I trust you even more to know what works best for you. 🙂

Susan Kay Great review, Karen! I've yet to read a Kristin Hannah, so I think I won't be starting with this one. I was thinking The Great Alone sounds most intriguing to me?

Thank you Susan! Re The Great Alone... that wouldn't be a good one to ask me about either. I gave that one 2 stars! Sorry. 😣
