What in the world happened to the spark and connection and emotion found in a Corinne Michaels book? I really like a lot of this author’s work and was so excited to read this first book in her new series but wow, is it ever a dud.
This book is about a barely out of college woman holding on to an unrequited love with the world’s most bland man based on a single kiss years earlier, and who writes a human interest story on grown men (thejr careers peaked in college sports) playing in an ULTIMATE FRISBEE league that is SO evocative the owner literally begs her to continue working with the paper forever under any means because shocker- there’s internet everywhere and she can work remotely (hence removing the entire reason for their not being together). And she is willing to give it all up for the dude who desperately needs therapy for abandonment issues but hey, it’s ok because at the last minute he decides not to be a dick after all and confess his love. Yay!
There are a LOT of tropes here competing. Single dad. Firefighter/hero. Former athlete. Childhood friends to lovers. Frenemies to lovers. Small town. Brother’s best friend. These two are single and they definitely like each other but for some inexplicable reason have declared they have to fight their feelings because…why? The entire basis of the plot is wishy washy. Very early on in the book I was disappointed by how bland it was. I don’t often give poor reviews but this was very surprising considering I usually really enjoy Corinne Michaels books. I’m hoping it was a fluke.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
