In a word: disappointing.
This started out so positively, the first page had me hooked and then it went downhill, fell apart, became tedious and ended up a mess.
I think the main problem I have is that Li Lan is such a nothing character, sorry to say. She isn't interesting and has no personality. She has been educated in a fashion, that's the sum total of who she is. And she is like a child, easily distracted and believing of anything anyone anywhere tells her. Someone says this person( a good person) is a murderer, she believes it. Someone says this person(another good person)has run off to be a concubine and she believes it. Over and over.
She doesn't ever figure anything out for herself. Someone always tells her what she needs to know. She manages to find a spirit/ghost to tell her what she needs to know about the spirit world, who leads her to the Plains of the Dead where she meets yet another person who tells her how things are.
She never solves the mystery. The killer finally shows up and says "I did it" and exits.
The mystery of who is misbehaving in the afterlife is also told and not shown. We don't even get an idea of what will actually happen when the truth is revealed, other than the perpetrators will be dealt with. Okay then.
Obviously, from what I've said, there is almost total telling and little to no showing the plot. Yes, Li Lan floats about here and there and there and here and does a whole lot of nothing.
And waits for rescue after stupidly getting herself into trouble. Let me repeat that, she waits and calls out for rescue. This isn't a heroine.
She is also easily distracted by the newest pretty shiny thing to cross her path.
The ending is poorly done (view spoiler)
Didn't like.

Kagama-the Literaturevixen Sorry you didnt like it. Good Review though. I think I will try to read it though since the plot is intriguing.

kari It just seems to sag a bunch in the center and Li Lan becomes a girl who seems to only want what she can't have. I hope you'll like it better than I did. Let me know if you finish it

Kagama-the Literaturevixen Sure. At least now Im prepared for any potential let-down-ness.

Lets see how it goes :)

Jason cant avoid this one even with a negative review. the plot is just too unusual for me not to pick it up. I hate the elements you mentioned, and feel like im trapping myself in a corner. I never give up on a book (rarely) so this may become just a hardship. Not to sound ignorant and such, but any eastern settings tend to trip me up anyways, but mostly those deriving from something in india or by an indian author.

I really wanted to like this one. The language of it started out so beautiful, but it lost me quickly. Like you, I have to try to finish what I start, really difficult for me to put a book aside unfinished, but occasionally I do. I'm glad I did finish this one, but I wish I had liked it.

yah, i used to have this thing about putting books to the side; i just forgot what it is about. But, with the issue of semi difficult to finish books it really doesnt matter if you remember the details, or thats what i think. I know this one has been divided between those that adore it and those who struggled to finish it. Doesn't support my need to jump on it RIGHT now, but im curious

kari I hope you like it. Let me know what you think if you finish it.

Bette Hester I agree, Kari. In fact, I found it slow going just getting to Book 2. Yangze Choo is going to appear on Coursera course ... only reason I am continuing. I am not a fan of the "Spirit World".

You're welcome. NO problem.

Lindsey Cantada I couldn't agree with you more. I thought the opening plot was fantastic but the author just couldn't deliver. I found myself scanning the paragraphs because it was sooooo drawn out and boring.

kari Thanks. It started out so well but quickly fell apart. Could have been wonderful.

Jason I'm still going to give it a try though. typically eastern lit is something I pull away from as a default, but this theme is sorta surprisingly cool.

kari I hope you like it. Didn't work for me but I did love the beginning of it

Rachel This book was a mess. Great review!

It started out so interesting and then, wow, did it fall apart. Thanks for the comment.

Asia Yes, to this review!! I had wanted to read this book for so long and now that I have, I’m bummed. It sucked. It’s a shame because the book started out decent enough, but somewhere in middle it became clear to me that Li Lan was an idiot (not that she was ever that great in the first place). It just went downhill from there as I forced myself to finish. I can’t believe that after all that whining about Tian Bai, not having any marriage prospects, and missing out on the chance to have children, she decides she wants Er Lang? You gotta love the fickleness of it all (at this point I hated her) so much for family and all that pouting she did after finding out Tian Bai was engaged to someone else. Honestly, what was the point of her trying to get back in her body? Wouldn’t it have made more sense if she had let herself die in the first place? This book turned out to be so pointless.

Jason Isn't she a newbie? Maybe she will get better at it.

message 22: by kari (new) - rated it 2 stars

kari Asia, I completely agree. I loved how this book started and the language was beautiful but it just fell apart the father it went along. Her thoughts and actions became just became nonsense.

message 23: by kari (new) - rated it 2 stars

kari Hopefully she will get better, Jason. Her use of words is lovely, storytelling not so great.

Nikki I gave this a five star review as I loved the concept but when I gave it more thought, It's slow placed & Li lan is an irritating, childish girl who is unchanging. I think similar mythology yet more mature books like this that would probably make better reads if I read them are The Girl with Ghost Eyes and Three Souls for more grown up female characters

Thanks for the comment. I will look for those books. This felt like a great premise that didn't come across well. I agree with the slow pace and the childishness. It started out great, the language is beautiful, but the story and characters are lacking.

Thaís Bertholino I really, really loved the folklore/context elements of the book but her character, although I don't hate her, is just so flat...I understand how you feel. And I got like: wtf when the God decided he wanted to marry a 18yo human who didn't know what she wanted from life. LOL

I did enjoy the folklore, but wish the characters had been better written. I have trouble with a protagonist who can't figure anything out and never helps herself. And yep, suddenly the immortal just conveniently falls in love with her. Nope. Just nope. Lol

message 28: by Anna (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anna Slastnikova Agree! Also I was puzzled at first why dismissing Tian Bai it was not obvious but then figured out the same. Well actually I guess it’s like new world changed her now she’s not satisfied with ordinary life. Also in the end there was something along the lines “when I met Er Lang very first time I already knew he’s special “ - well not convinced at all, she was clearly obsessed with tian bai most of the book! Not saying it was a perfect match but indeed out of nowhere came there obsession with Er Lang

message 29: by Elys (new) - rated it 4 stars

Elys yes! I couldn't agree more!

message 30: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Just finished this book and I completely agree that it started out well and then just became bogged down with too much detail and abrupt random changes in storylines- some of which went nowhere. For instance, why the whole subplot of Isabel Souza??? Was that just an attempt to make Tian Bai less appealing as a love interest??? And what was the concubine/‘mother’ writing down when she snuck into the old man’s room? Seemed like some kind of setup for that character as being some mind of spy but then ‘oh no her mother is actually the ancient looking amah who sacrificed her youth for her daughter’ and we never find out what the concubine was up to....all very strange as though the author made up a bunch of stuff and then changed her mind but left those threads in there to clutter up the narrative even more.

Britney Me, who relates to Li Lan, as I am more of a cerebral type. I can barely tolerate fiction stories. I find this humorous, and have concluded my personality is terrible.
