it was amazing

Caleb Carr's novel of a serial killer on the loose in turn of the century New York, and the dangerous pursuit of him by Dr. Lazlo Kreizler and his friends is a truly wonderful read. This has so much period atmosphere the reader can almost hear the hoofbeats trotting over the cobblestone streets beneath gaslit street lamps. It is long and exciting, yet not long enough, because by the time you finish, you'll feel like many of these people are your friends, and want to spend more time with them.

The riveting story is narrated by Dr. Kreizler's good friend, John Moore. Before you are finished reading this delicious historical mystery you will meet an array of interesting and memorable characters you'll come to cherish. Sara Howard is a pretty and extremely capable woman ahead of her time. Sara and Kreizler's pal, Moore, push the investigation forward against strong opposition from conventional law enforcement. Two New York cops also ahead of their time, Lucius and Marcus, will use footwork and cutting-edge investigative techniques to catch a dangerous killer. A young street urchin, Stevie, saved from a miserable future by the good doctor, and a very loyal servant named Cyrus round out this rag-tag group that confront the unthinkable. They will break new ground, using Lazlo's "profile" to catch a serial killer.

When Lazlo's old friend, Theodore Roosevelt, now head of the New York Police Department, is confronted with several murders of boy prostitutes so gruesome in nature that even the most seasoned and hardened of professionals can barely stomach being called to the murder scenes, he makes a decision that will change the face of police-work forever. He unofficially allows Kreizler to form a small group to pursue the killer through psychological profiling. Police secretary Sara Howard, and crime reporter John Moore, a man who knows the underbelly of New York all to well, are two of the main players in this exciting mystery. As they close in on the killer through Kreizler's use of psychological profiling, danger hits closer to home than any of our friends had expected.

There are moments so full of flavor in this fine historical mystery that you'll feel like you are sitting alongside the characters at Delmonico's as they enjoy a good meal, and plan their next move. This fine novel is truly memorable, and holds a special place among books I've read. If you love historical mysteries you do not want to miss this one!

Thanks! Yes, a nice reading memory for sure, very fun. :-)

Beverly Are you watching the series? I enjoyed the book and they are doing a grand job on television as well. The period really comes alive.

No, I'm not even certain we get the series here (hadn't seen it advertised so wasn't even aware there was one) and if so, which Foxtel channel it's on. Hopefully it's well done, because the two books were memorable reads. I always thought Carr should have continued with it, just interspersing other projects between releases, but perhaps they were so involved it burned him out on them. At least we have this one and The Angel of Darkness. :-)

Beverly The show is on Monday nights at 9 p.m. on TNT.

Hmm...thanks. I'm not sure if Foxtel here in Australia has TNT (we don't have TCM any longer, but it was no great loss, since they gave us second and third-tier Hollywood stuff, not at ALL the great schedule for TCM in America) but I'm fairly certain TNT is not part of the package(s) my wife and I have. We have the pretty basic packages, just enough to get 13th street for mysteries, the Scy-fy channel, Fox Classics and ESPN. A zillion other channels in the package, but we usually watch those mentioned, when we do watch, because there's hardly anything worth watching on most of the other stations. Reality junk. LOL

Franky Great review Bobby, I finally just finished this brilliant book tonight. Loved the book, despite its graphic content. It was so well written and engaging.

I think the series is also available on Amazon too, they are releasing episodes each week I believe.

Thanks! I see you gave it a high rating also. It's really memorable and engrossing. This one's proof that historical fiction doesn't have to be tedious or boring! :-)

Fred Shaw I agree on your assessment, and highly recommend you read some of his other novels.

"I've got Surrender, New York, that you gave four stars to only WTR list, but no telling when I'll be ready to squeeze it in. As of late, I'm trying to get a balance of more involved and complex reads with some lighter, for fun stuff, as I work on the western, which is always draining. I'll pick up a copy eventually though. :-)

Joe Krakovsky Great review, Bobby.

Thanks! Read this when it first came out (in hardback) and have read it again since then. We're kind of out of the loop here in Australia and I hadn't even realized they had finally made some sort of series out of this until someone commented about it. :-)

William Thank you for the review. I’ve pushed this on my top-to-read list.

Thanks. It's been quite a few years (this is a much older review for me than the date indicates, transferred from Amazon) since I read this one, shortly after its initial release. As I recall, the historical atmosphere and the characters and their interactions sort of took precedence over a few gruesome discoveries. I don't normally care for gore and brutality if graphically written, especially first-person, so it must have been minimal enough that it didn't feel gratuitous or repulsive.
