3.5 stars

There was just something about this one that kept it from totally rocking, and I can't quite put my finger on what it was. It was good, just not (for me) great.
Kinda dry maybe? Or I just didn't totally connect with the characters?
Not sure.

description

But it's still one of those books that I'm glad I read, and I'm actually really looking forward to reading more about this world/worlds that Schwab created.
And I seriously mean that! There's something cool about this setting and these characters that makes me want to see what's going to happen next. I kind of feel like maybe the first book was just a set-up, and now that the world-building is done, this series (trilogy?) is gonna take off!

description

Because that happens, right? Book one is sorta dry and crunchy, and then book two rocks!
*nods head*
Yes. I'm feeling confident about that prediction for some reason. I loved Vicious, I loved the world that she created in this one...totally confident.

description

*cough*
Anyway. My point is that I can see why so many of my friends loved this, and I don't want anyone to mistake a 3.5 rating as something bad.
I don't understand why anyone would think that to start with, but...there's always one.
*eyeballs crowd*

So the gist of the story is that this wizardish (Traveler) character named Kell is one of the 2 people alive who has the ability to move between worlds. Londons , to be exact.
There are 4 different alternate worlds out there, and the only thing they have in common is that London is a city in each of them.
Grey London = Us
There's no magic left in our world.
Red London = Kell
His world has a perfect balance with magic, and it's a pretty nice place to live.
White London = Dangerous
Their world has squeezed magic so hard that it's retreating from them. It's filled with desperate people willing to do bad shit for power.
Black London = Dead
Something happened and they were overtaken by evil magic, sealed off from the other worlds, and now exists only as a cautionary tale.
The point? Magic is real!

description

Without spoiling anything, he gets robbed by a scrappy thief from our Grey London, and the two form a strange friendship/partnership. It's sweet without being romantic...YET. And that's a real selling point for me. It's not that I don't lovelovelove romance in my books, but as I get older/more crotchety, I find myself seriously digging the Slow Burn storylines better than the instant attraction stuff. I get the appeal, but it just makes me scoff at this point in my life. When I read about a couple who seem to fly into each other's arms in a fit of passion, all while declaring their undying love for each other? Instead of oohing and cooing like a normal person...
This! This is what I see!

description

Ok, besides a non-awkward romance, this has a few other cool things going for it, as well.
1) Cool family dynamics! Kell's part of a magical Royal Family. Well, sorta, but not really. It's...complicated.

description

2) Delilah (possibly) has a secret origin! Is there more to her than meets the eye? *wink, wink*
{insert spoilery inside joke here}
Still, even without anything extra, she's a tough little cookie.

description

3) The worlds themselves are just plain interesting. I think Schwab did a good job describing the different Londons because all of them felt very real and well thought out. But I've always had a thing for alternate versions of our world stacked on top of each other, so this was right up my ally, to begin with! And how cool would it be to have the ability to slide in and out of each of those?!

description

Ok, so even if it didn't really satisfy me as much as I had hoped, I'm all in for the next book!

Taschima I thought that too, but this one being a set up for the second book. I still loved it :D And I LOVE Delilah, I read the first few chapters of the second book and she is still such a badass. Can't wait!

Anne I can't wait for the second one, either. I agree that this feels like a set-up for something much larger/better. That's what I'm banking on, anyway!

Jilly Great review, Anne!

message 4: by Christopher (new) - added it

Christopher I never did rate this because I couldn't decide how I felt about it. I am looking forward to the next one though.

Thanks, Jilly!

I know, right?! It's good, but it's dry & crunchy, too! Definitely looking forward to #2. I'm hoping it has that little extra something.

Mrs. Kristin I felt the exact same way!!!I had a sneaky feeling I read this book before too, like it had similar elements from her other works. (But I went on a huge Schwabe bender before reading this). It was a cool story that fell slightly short of its potentional. Loved your review of it!

I'm glad I'm not alone here! It just felt...off? But still good? So weird! I waffled on the rating for days!

What's your favorite Schwab book? I've only read Vicious.

Anne Cinthia wrote: "I listened to the audio book, and didn't enjoy it. I will buy the book and give it another try!"

Audios are tricky for me. *frowns* I only use them for stuff I think I probably won't get around to reading. Maybe you can wait and see what the reviews are for the second book before you try this one again?

Nidofito You and I are pretty similar on our opinions for this book. Vicious is on my Tbr. I'll get to it...eventually

message 11: by Anne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne Vicious is totally different from this one, Nidofito. There's no real good guy, and I know that kind of turned some people off.

Nidofito I'm not really worried about disliking it. I enjoy Schwab's writing. Is it her debut book?

message 13: by Anne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne I think it was? OR maybe the first book under that name, because I think she has another pseudonym, right?
Anyway, I loved it!

message 14: by Anne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne Hahahahaha! I just snorted...

Nidofito You're right, she does have a pseudonym and I think she's written a few MGs before starting YA fiction

message 16: by Anne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne Is this YA? Jeez this shit has changed so much since I first started reading it! LMAO!

message 17: by Christopher (new) - added it

Christopher No, this isn't considered YA. She writes YA as Victoria Schwab and uses V.E. Schwab for her adult releases.

message 18: by Anne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne Ok, that makes sense...smartypants. :)

Nidofito Wait, this is adult?

message 20: by Anne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne Apparently. The almost rape scene? Seemed adult to me...

Nidofito Uh, I guess it's been a while for me. Don't remember that. Eh, whatever.

message 22: by Anne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne Ha! I feel that way about 2 weeks after I read a book. I can't remember shit anymore.

Rahma Manaseer great review Ann! I'm a Shwab fan and I really hope the second book rocks.

message 24: by Anne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne Thanks, Rahma! The next one should be out pretty soon, so we won't have to wait too long!

Vicious is the best hands down. Her Archived (almost) trilogy is really good but she becomes more polished by the time she reaches Vicious. Plus....superheroes....duh!

message 26: by Anne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne Superheroes, FTW! I just recently learned about Schwab, so I'm still behind on her stuff. I'll gt to the rest of it, eventually... *laughs*

way too much tongue. I wasn't off the charts excited over vicious either so I feel you there

Alexa Loved the explanation of the 4 alternate worlds! I need to read this just to see that.

So cow tongue isn't sexy to you, either?

It's REALLY cool, Alexa. Definitely worth a read!

Justine The thing that kept this book from totally rocking is that it was too short...it just ended. One of my other GR friends rightly said it felt like a set-up book. There was a lot more to explore here but it was like she just didn't go there. I know she plans to write more in the series, but I would have liked this one to have been fleshed out quite a bit more.

That said, I did like it, a lot.

Schwab just signed a 4 book deal which will deliver unto us the long awaited return of Victor Vale (yippee!!) as well as more in this series too:)

message 32: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Space shuttle and black hole gifs!

Who needs porn? Thanks, Anne!

I think yo may be right. This is one of those time when longer would have been better. And, yeah, it was a bit abrupt. Still, it was a good set-up book.

Seriously? 4 book deal with Victor?! OHMYGOD!

No problem, Jeff. I'm always looking out for you, buddy!
In fact, here's a little Boob Window to make your Friday special!

Jeff You're the bestest pal I guy could ask for, Anne!!

I'm at work so I'll save it for later.

message 36: by Anne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne Anything I can do for a friend. Within reason. *cough*

Jessica ❁ ➳ Silverbow ➳ ❁ It took me FOREVER to connect to the characters, too, but I ended up liking it anyway. *shrugs awkwardly* Not entirely sure why . . . BUT. I'm glad you're in for #2.

Did you see the extended preview on NetGalley? It's like 130 pages, I think.

message 38: by Anne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne No...I didn't see it! I never read the previews, though. I'll just wait till it comes out. Definitely in for #2!

message 39: by Mir (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mir I just started this. So far seems cool, but not grabbing me the way Vicious did.

Melanie (meltotheany) This review is absolutely perfect.

Amanda Greever I'm reading this one now. I just finished "Vicious" last week and decided to jump right back into another Schwab world. "Vicious" grabbed me from the beginning, but this one just seems off. I'm interested, but not enthralled. Hoping it'll pick up, but I feel like I might be coming to a similar conclusion as you.

message 42: by Anne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne Yeah, this one seems less something than Vicious. I still need to read the next book in the series, but I'm dragging my feet...

Amanda Greever I picked this one AND the next one up from the library. I may be returning the second one and holding off on reading it. I'm not sure I can spend two books back to back in this world.
