I do not think I have ever read a more emotionally stunted asshole in all my reading as Matt was in this story.

Valentina Heart And I completely agree!!

MsMiz (Tina) You read it??? Ha!

Valentina Heart Yes, today. Such a strange book. But the worst thing is, Matt was the third d**k I've stumbled on this week. It must be some current fashion...

Do you have a recommendation? Something contemporary? I really need something good to read which won't leave me in an emotional mess.

Chrys Pretty sure Matt made it onto my "needs-dropkick-to-face" shelf. Blackwell writes those denial boys really well, but I reallly like the other guys in her stories. Like James. And Bailey (I think?) from
And So Is Love by Scarlet Blackwell

Valentina Heart Is it a prison story? Actually happens inside?

I didn't really understand what the author had envisioned for Matt, so I can't say I feel for him or cheer for him. Still, you gave it 4 stars. Makes me wonder why?

Chrys It is a prison story and it's good, but I'm so not recommending it right now. Another jerkface.

As for the rating, my stars are based off of personal taste rather than actual quality. (which may not be the best system but it works for me) So some of the books I read get higher ratings because of what I'm left with at the end. In cases like these, I feel for the good characters (like James and Bailey) so I'm harboring so much hope for them that I get excited for happy endings. If I were rating these books on the characters and how they handled the situation...? Matt: -5 James: 3 (5 for being awesome, but he loses 2 points bc I don't know what he sees in Matt) So it's an overall feel for the book, I guess.

Not to make this into a full-on lecture about my rating system, just wanted to mention a book can get 5 stars if it leaves me a blubbering mess too. Depends.

Did you give it 3 stars because of Matt?

Valentina Heart Not really. It was more the overall impression. I won't care for the edits or the writing unless I can't keep up with the story. The plot and characterization is what gets to me mostly. Here Matt was an ass, and I might have gone higher despite that, if not for the loose ends. The flow was cut at the end, and suddenly Matt is all kisses and sunshine. It felt like the whole story before that what pointless. No one changes that fast without therapy. Or with therapy.

So do you have any recks contemp. Not really angsty?

Valentina Heart I liked the one in the kitchen;) It was like insensitive and rough, but it was kinda refreshing too;)

Chrys I hear ya on the end being abrupt without therapy. Got swept up I guess. Recs...errrmmm problem is there are few books I've rated high that you haven't read. Best out of the 5ish there are is I'll Be Your Drill, Soldier by Crystal Rose

But I'll scout some more. :)

MsMiz (Tina) It is these types of characters that stick with us though, no? I mean, we will always remember Matt and his asshatedness even if he did the 180 at the end. There really is not anything wrong with this story and Blackwell writes characters that are like sandpaper on the soul. That is a darn good story. I also liked And So is Love, but again in a prison and a dick (even though he is not nearly as bad a dick as Matt, IMO).

So lets see: Something Shattered - I liked this one. How about something fun (a bit of a jerk, but still not a bad one! The Heart of Texas.....man have you checked my shelves, I have read a lot of decent stuff lately!

MsMiz (Tina) Yeah, oh and beating up people in Bars - you are a successful business owner over the age of 30 - GET.THE.FUCK.OVER.YOURSELF!

Chrys I went apesh*t when that happened. HAH! I think one of my status updates happened after. Along the lines of "NOOOOOOOOooooo WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!!?" and I may have attempted to launch my nook across the room... Lol. but Tina I agree with you that these characters stay with you. They get under my skin in a good and bad way.

Oh, and I think the character in And So is Love was more justified in his jerkfaceness bc of where they were and the situation. It didn't make it all okay but it helps you empathize.

MsMiz (Tina) Completely agree Chrys - I actually did not have nearly as much issue with the strong character in And So is Love. While I did not think he made the smartest decisions, it all made sense if you put it in the context of his life experiences (well and heck, he was in jail). For you and me, his 'jerkiness' was not right, but for him, it was justifiable.

Valentina Heart I'm halfway through Something Shattered. They're getting to sex awfully fast. But Heart of Texas kind of put me off. I've read some reviews and I don't think I want to wait more than half of the book for there to be any m/m.

I've actually read more than half of I'll be your drill soldier for Q4 but lost interest in the middle there. Haven't rated it because I do plan on finishing it eventually.

My jaw dropped when they were in the dish store lol I mean they are grown men. That was another thing that got to me. Instead of James influencing Matt and making him a better man, at one point it really seemed that James was starting to be an asshole as well. I don't think he would have started any fights before he'd met Matt.

Chrys Hmmm I'm hesitant to read Something Shattered because I tried reading a Bradford book earlier this week and just couldn't take it.

And dish store? Sad to say I forgot about that scene. I freaked out when Matt lost it on the guy at the bar with James. But that's partly why I liked the book--it got me all riled up.

Valentina Heart Lol I'm actually in the middle of two Bradford books. Haven't managed to read either. But they are extremely different in style. I wouldn't have been able to connect the second book to the author.

hey have a fight in a dish store, and James takes off, saying to the sales lady 'He's paying for the damage, he has more money." I loved that scene;)

Valentina Heart lol I've read 70 pages of Rescued and then I stopped. Not sure how many of Shattered, but I think it's about the same. I have no idea what the problem is, but at one point it gets too unbelievable for me and I move to something else.

Chrys Yep...Rescued. I liked the whole "rescue" aspect of the story but the guys really did remind me of boys on viagra and estrogen pills. Constantly horny and acting like girls. It was cute, just not what I was looking to read.

Chrys It made me giggle. There are two types of giggling than can happen when reading m/m books...this wasn't the good kind. ;)

Valentina Heart God your memory is amazing! I don't think a week has passed since I've started that one and I can't even remember what it was about!

Chrys More like...selective memory. Lol

MsMiz (Tina) Damn and I have read them both....hmmm...for shattered I must have been in a PMS mood and I just enjoyed it, in a recluse plus cop kind of way.

This is such a fun discussion - not even the same author!

Val I owe you one since I rec'ed Shattered.....

Valentina Heart I think it's more about the taste. There are some authors I just can't read at all. I'm not done with Shattered and it still might turn out to be a good book. Nikyta got me reading A.Grey - Courage so I didn't get to that one again today.
I couldn't even finish Vigil (Notturno, #2) by Z.A. Maxfield and I love Maxfield. So it must be a mood thing;)

Don't worry about it, you'll rec me something wondeful;) But I have one that's good, Go Fish by H.T. Murray . Have you read that one?

MsMiz (Tina) Yeah - it is really short and sweet....you could not read Vigil??? Oh girl, put down the books and walk away til the world is righted okay???? hee

Chrys Tina - I know exactly what you mean about mood. It really effects my opinion of the book.

Val - I'm about to start A. Grey's A Taste of Love...but us talking about Uneven w/ Nikyta makes me want to re-read it AND read PL Nunn's Bloodraven for the first time.

Go Fish looks cute. :)

MsMiz (Tina) Ohhhhhh Uneven was amazing and Bloodraven was all a really really good read.

A Taste of Love series are really nice books.

Valentina Heart I agree for the first two,but I only read half of Taste of Love, didn't like the twist so I abandoned it without any intentions of going back, but people seem to like it. Uneven is pretty unique and very good, and Bloodraven somewhat innovative and certainly interesting.

I can't really read Vigil. Even the first one wasn't my favorite Maxfield, but this one just drags and they talk way to much about stuff I'm not all that interested in. Hell, their whole relationship is just f***ed up.I always leave the difficult ones for the end of the challenge *sighs*, and can't seem to finish it.

MsMiz (Tina) Heck did I rec Vigil to you as well....???

Valentina Heart No lol Yours is Deadly nightshade.
Something terrible has happed! Have you read that story Messed examinations? Well the blog page is gone. And there was another story, WIP Not supposed to which was very good. And now the page is gone and I'm never gonna be able to read the ending of that story... So f-ing sad!

I've been checking your to read shelf, looking at my rec options for the challenge

MsMiz (Tina) You rec'ed Messed Examinations to me on Q1 challenge and I read it right away thank goodness. I have not been out to the site since I finished. Maybe it will be up soon?

Did you read Deadly Nightshade? I enjoyed them, but they do not sing to me as your type of book. I think as I recall it was between two okay books and that is the one you went with. I will have to dig to find something special for you for Q2!

Valentina Heart I found it;) I usually have no peace until I dig up everything about the author. She changed the address, but I'm not a librarian and I can't change the link below the story.

Yeah, Deadly Nightshade doesn't really appeal to me, that's why I haven't read it yet. You've reced Infected prey and the sequel for that. I've had it for the first challenge and haven't read it, and then I heard it's a cliffhanger so there is no way I'm touching that. Off shelf, you went with Captive prince, WIP which I'm dying to read but with it not done it's worse than a cliffhanger. Vince, which I wanted to read but it's typical Snyder ending, and I have to be in the mood for that. Just when the story gets to the best part, the book is over. And Good Doctor, another one I had for the Q4 and read 7-10 chapter, I'm not sure, but couldn't get into it.

God I wrote a novel...

MsMiz (Tina) Therefore I either give up rec'ing for you or I pull something out of my hat that is really surprising. Not sure I have that in me, but I will start prepping this weekend!!!

Chrys When you're writing a comment, right above the box it says "add book/author" right next to (some html ok). Both are clickable, but you want the first one. :)

Valentina Heart MsMiz (aka Tina) wrote: "Therefore I either give up rec'ing for you or I pull something out of my hat that is really surprising. Not sure I have that in me, but I will start prepping this weekend!!!"

But that is really strange, because we do usually have the same taste in books. I mean, I always check out your rating when I'm considering something...

MsMiz (Tina) I know I do the same...maybe it is just that we have read the same books and there is not much left to rec from???? Who knows - maybe I have performance anxiety when it comes to rec'ing for you!

Valentina Heart Lol I have no idea. But your to read shelf is getting poorer the more challenges we go through;) If I read something good I usually rec it, challenge or no challenge, to the people I think might like it. And we do read a lot of the same books. I mean it's not like we don't pick up on the good books around here. m/m group is like one big community of book lovers who are all starving for a good read;)

MsMiz (Tina) No kidding!! Hey have you read The Tourist yet by London? I want you to read it and give me your thoughts. I am half way through and....well just read it! hee

Valentina Heart Spirit? Seriously? I don't have it, so it probably won't come up right away. But I'll add it to the list?

MsMiz (Tina) K, it is only like 84 pages...so it is quick.

Valentina Heart Oh, okay, then I'm adding to the challenge list. I read the short ones pretty quickly;)

MsMiz (Tina) Val - did you say my too read list is getting poorer???

What over 700 books and there is not a single good book to read? hee

Valentina Heart Yeah, lol but not the way it came out ;D There are less and less books I've read that you haven't. So out of those 700 I only look at my 4-5 star reads. That number isn't very high.

MsMiz (Tina) So you are always more welcome to go off the reservation, which you usually do for me and I have always enjoyed.

MsMiz (Tina) Oh Val, lets pick a book that we both have not read and read it together. I wish there were more 'epics' out there that we have not read.

Valentina Heart Now you have me intrigued. We could do that;)

Anita I LOVED THIS BOOK!! But then again, I love a lot of angst and bitchiness and Matt had a lot of that! This one will stay with me for a long time. Yeah, the scene in the dish store made my eyes bug out! I kept saying "Don't do it! Don't do it!! Haha! What a ride! And speaking of rides...that scene on the Ferrari was freaking HOT!!

message 48: by Cat (new) - rated it 4 stars
