2011/03/24: 4.5 stars. My eyes got quite misty on my train-ride to work. How embarrassing!

2011/10/16: I've just ordered the hardcover. I need to reread this to write a review.

“I decide that I like the idea of Liz as a dragon. One of my favorite storybooks was about goodluck dragons, how their arrival always means something wonderful lies ahead. If that's true, then, as far as I'm concerned, Liz can spit as much fire as she wants. And if I stand near enough to it, maybe I'll glow a little, too.”

“My heart broke when he died, split in half and fell down into my stomach or somewhere deep and muddy, and I'm still not sure where it is now. I hear it beating sometimes in my ears, or feel its fast pulse in my neck, like I do now; but in my chest, where it should be, it mostly just feels empty.”

oliviasbooks It's quite lovely, Tina. Part of the book is a mother-daughter conflict (the mom is a strict catholic, the daughter craves freedom and has a friend who is fascinated by Wiccan practices), part is the daughter's coming to terms with her father's death and her own estrangement from her peers, part is funeral/mortician stuff (funny and weird and deep), a bit romance, a wacky church theatre group (which I love). It will amount to 4 or 5 stars, if nothing annoying happens.
