Shay Ohhh, no no no Kat. Dont give up.
Keep reading, I know you'll love it eventually. it gets better and better.

Really!

Kat Kennedy *Whimpers* No more rapey-ness?

Kat Kennedy Hellion, I can't express how much I agree.

Kat Kennedy I haven't been to Scotland but I DID remark to a friend the other day that I can't go because it's very likely I'll be pulled back in time and bullied by a hulking, skulking highlander with no appreciation for personal space or women's liberation.

She told me Scotland is fantastic and to stop being a melodramatic author type (whatever that means!) but I still think my fears are perfectly valid!

Kat Kennedy Your answer to this question is very important to this conversation: Have you ever seen a Scotsman that doesn't fit properly into his trews? ... and I don't mean love handles either.

Are Highlanders just that freakishly well-endowed or is this another myth perpetuated by the romance industry? Please note that my travel agent is invested in your response.

Kat Kennedy By the way, how can being told you belong in someone's bed be considered in any way endearing?

The kitchen would be an upgrade to this because at least they'd be suggesting you have the intelligence to follow a damn recipe!

Kat Kennedy Hellion wrote: "(And please tell me you read Drustan's book in KMM's series, so that trews comment makes sense.)"

Totally, totally read that part and rolled my eyes with proper abandon.

Kat Kennedy Why are you yelling at me?

Galla For someone in this thread who knows: is there a way to just skip the rapey parts and go to a book in this series I might like? If so, where would you recommend jumping in?

Kat Kennedy Yes, unwanted sexual touching of any kind is a violation - one I take very seriously whether fantasy or not. Other people told me it was rapey but I was NOT expecting that he actually physcially/sexually accosted a clearly terrified girl. That's not rapey. That's just plain rape.

message 11: by Galla (new)

Galla Thanks Sam! I might try that. I don't usually like skipping books in a series either, but I'll do it if it keeps me from feeling like I need brain bleach.

Kat Kennedy It's a hard one, Galla, because there is actually semi-important information though not really. I think you'll be happier having NOT read this book.

message 13: by Galla (new)

Galla I have a hard enough time with rape in books in which it's obviously presented as a bad thing, with consequences other than... you know, true love. Even when a writer treats rape and its aftereffects with relative sensitivity, those scenes are just really difficult for me to read. And it's an overused plot device that occasionally, I'm convinced, results from people sitting around wondering how else they can abuse their characters in a given novel because more layered plots are eluding them.

If it's the hero doing the raping, and I'm actually supposed to be rooting for that couple at some point? Just no.

Kat Kennedy It's worse. It's the hero doing the raping and the female protagonist accepts it, barely shows any side-effects and isn't even really troubled by it.

It's like the trauma is completely ignored because the hero is just so hot, how could you be upset about him threatening you, terrifying you and then sexually assaulting you while holding you captive?

No. I think you should definitely skip this one, Galla.

message 15: by Galla (new)

Galla Yeah, I would find that upsetting. Will skip this one and pick up the next book at some point, and if I missed some crucial world-building/character info, I'll just post confused status updates until someone fills me in, lol.

In the next book the woman is the dominant one. Just FYI! Most of the Valkyrie run the show when it is their book.

That was the most disturbing thread I've ever seen.

Especially since it was started by a man and not a woman:

Kat Kennedy O.o Somebody hold me.

Barbara (VampAngel) I hated this book. I will probably never read anything else from this author unless someone I trust tells me it's super worth it. This series is dead to me. I REALLY don't get why so many people love this book. It baffles me.

message 25: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda Hahaha. I have no idea about this book. Doesn't sound like my type, but I have to thank you for the laugh. Great cat. Perfectly eloquent review!

Kristen "Kirby" Yeah, I agree. I hated Lachain for his forcefulness and how accepting Emma the Wimp was to her abusive treatment. I mean, so what if he's been burned for centuries? No reason to sexually assault someone just because their "yours". I don't understand why Emma was so forgiving, even believing his behavior was so heroic and a display of great strength. Blech. Not my thing.

Nina I haven't read this book but I have read her latest Poison Princess (The Arcana Chronicles, #1) by Kresley Cole and it was just as bad as this one. Kresley Cole writes some seriously disturbing relationships. Jackson is the biggest asshole on the planet.
