it was ok
bookshelves: 2016, why-the-hype, short-stories, sci-fi

I don't get the hype. Yes, culturally diverse - I like the main character and her background, but as an actual science fiction work, it's very weak.

KOMET You need to check out Octavia Butler. Your mind will be BLOWN WIDE OPEN.

Laura Sorry you didn't enjoy it. I liked that it worked two ways, with science fiction, and being told by someone who was non-western, and thus an alien to most readers as well, but totally understand where you are coming from if you wanted more from the story.

Tatiana The whole alien angle was just so weak, imo.
Maybe you'll like it more? I had very high hopes for this author, was already planning to read her other works. But if this is her best, as other reviewers have said, I don't really want to read anything else. She is no N. K. Jemisin, unfortunately.

Shveta Thakrar Amending my comment: if you were thinking of trying something else, I liked AKATA WITCH.

Jenel Read "Who Fears Death" and I think you will not be disappointed. This was a short read, and while I liked the character and her background, I think your comments about the crafting of the rest of the work has some merit. It's a tiny book and I am hoping the others live up to the amazing work I've seen from this author.

Josef KOMET...
EXACTLY....
Works is not science fiction many more than Kindred is...or Brown Girl in the Ring.

Nenia ✨ I yeet my books back and forth ✨ Campbell I agree. I liked the beginning and then it just got kind of weird. :(
