really liked it

This is an extraordinary book and I am so pleased to have read it. It deals with a subject I knew very little about, it has no introduction and it has the tiniest of conclusions. The bulk of the book is about human endurance in unbearable conditions and it is amazing. Surprisingly, despite the sadness of the topic, there are many uplifting moments and it is very hard to put the book down. I now have to go find out more about this horrific time in our history which I am sure is was what the author hoped for when she wrote it. Read it. You will not be sorry you did.

☮Karen Loved it too, Phryne.

Phrynne It was amazing she could make such an awful topic so readable!

Phrynne I must check that one out!

Jeannie I loved this book.

Canadian Jen I'm kicking myself as I had it out from the library a few months ago, then found it categorized as YA and quickly returned it. Looks like there has to be an exception for this one. Thanks - another push for me to get to it.

B the BookAddict Once I realized that this book indeed had nothing to do with Fifty Shades of Grey, it went on my tbr!

Phrynne It is one of those superior YAs that you find occasionally Jen!

Lol Bette:)

Britany Completely agree Phrynne! Great review.

Peter Thank god, it's not 50 shades book. I can't wait to read.

Phrynne No not the Fifty Shades book:)

YeonJuLee(1-10) I totally agree with you, Phrynne! I also thought is was an astonishing and good book to know about the history and think of the importance of humanity. Actually, I am a Korean student so I was able to relate this story with what the Japan have done to our country. Using Koreans as a subject for scientific experiment and labor foce, Japan could develop a lot, leaving Koreans wounded. I felt a source of anger and that's why I was able to feel empathy with the author of this book and the Lithuanians who appear in this book totally. We have learned about those hearings of suffer in history during our Korean history class and English class. Actually, it was our Enlgish teacher who recommened us to read this wonderful, heartbreaking story. In order to move toward a better way of relating to each other, and because world is a great community of mankind, I think we should teach the importance of humanity in school and learn about the hurtful history in many countries, so that the mistakes that mankind made shall not repeat again. Overall, I thought it was a powerful, good book to read just like you.

Phrynne Good comment YeonJuLee! It's a book with many messages:)

Hyowon Lee Me too, I got much impression by reading this book. Specially, reading the author's comments. Everyone says that there isn't the light, only darkness, but they didn't believe that. They chose 'hope' and even though they only could see the dark, they believed there will be light. And showed us 'the power of love'. Even though they don't have anything, they just love each other. Especailly I could feel while doing the christmas party, and when Lina's birthday.
Also, I thought about how I had ignorance on the history. Speak frankly, I know that I should learn about history, I forget it as soon as I learn it. But by reading this book, I felt I should remember their pain and make the world do not make the same mistake like history.

Shin Yeong Park I feel exactly same with you. Literally I didn't know about this another sad and painfully-veiled history, so as I was reading the book I searched it a lot. I think it's not only what author hoped-as you said- but also just another Lina, Elena, Jonas, and Andrius in Lithuania(or Baltic states) must have hoped. Even though it doesn't have extraordinary suspense, through this book, I could feel my warmed heart from time to time(especially when I saw Elena's love toward others..) , and it was very impressive how people go through the extremely unbearable situation. I believe that Ruta must have wanted to tell us how important 'hope' is. The families and friends encourage one another, and they try to find a silver lining in the darkness. (even though not always) I hope I could remind this book whenever I feel I live in full shades of gray.

Beomjun As I read this book, I think one more time about 'DEATH' and also I empathize with the sentence 'Becasue death presents in our life, we could lead our life much more meaningfully.' If my life was parmanent, I would just do what I want to do and do not care about other thinkgs which is like tasks that I do all the night.
I read this book and present 'Between shade of gray' with the topic 'machiavellsim'. In this book, there were many pars that mention Stalin and I think that Stalin was a machiavellist so I choose it as a topic. Stalin didn't care about citizen and also exploit them to achieve his own goal. And also the 'World War 2' is now refered to as the most curel was in the history, because it is ended by nuclear weapon and also Nazi use chemical weapon to kill Jew.
Simliar to you, I learned many things from it and can think about many aspects of society. Thank you for your sincere review!

Minsang Like you said we should find out more about this horrific time in our history, i think so too. I'm interested with in World History nowadays. During i learned the history, there are lots of wars and i can feel the cruelty of the war. My desired job is history teacher. So i think most of us should know about important accident in our history. So i think we should know about the world war 2, too. In fact, before i read this book i don't know about world war 2 well. But by Reading this book i can realize the cruelty of the world war 2 and lots of pain of people who don't have fault. I can know what is the war. Thanks to this book, i take a growing interest about the war and i want to read another books or movies about the war.
