I wish this book was about anybody other than the supposed main character, who I hated. But more, I hated Hill for writing such a terrible character. I KNOW fiction doesn't necessarily represent the author's actual beliefs, but the misogyny is SOOO thick and deep and wide in just the first 10% that I have to wonder. A man writing a woman character is already off to a "prove it to me" start for me, but to write a character who was so thoroughly vague, muddled, cloudy, dimwitted, spacey, and naive, and THEN to add in a super abusive husband that she didn't bat an eye at the insane vitriol and contempt and hate that boiled from him... well. Let's just say Hill failed in "proving it to me."
Regardless. This is a DNF for me (this no stars), which is a serious shame, because I thought the premise was pretty great and the dragon disease seemed cool.

The worldbuilding is GREAT so far, but I utterly loathe the MC's husband Jacob, and I hope that Harper gains some agency PDQ, or this will be another example of a male author badly writing a female character.

The whole scene between the two of them on "the night the hospital burned" was totally revolting. I hope this is to help us hate him when she kills him. I also hope she kills him.
