bookshelves: cliche-events, cute-couple, cute-child, fun-banter, funny-hot
There are some books which make me feel so much that I even start to think that these characters are living somewhere in America or England etc. Sometimes, I want to go and hug them or sometimes I want to console them (as in the example of me wanting to go and take care of Weston in Ground Rules by Roya Carmen).
In this book, there are two very sweet characters but I somehow felt detached. It could be “me or my mood only”, maybe you shouldn’t trust me because at least for now, I seem to be in the minority. But still, I will try to explain why I felt the way I felt :)
While I was reading this book, I couldn’t shake the feeling of “reading a recipé”:
1. Rich hot handsome guy with a damaged past – Tick
2. Beautiful, hot, tender girl with financial problems - Tick
3. The bitchy ex of the hero – Tick
4. The heroine in love with her best friend, who doesn’t claim her but still acts territorial –Tick
5. Major coincidences related to their both careers and private life so that they can give each other exactly the right advice – Tick
6. Jealousy – Tick
7. Fun banter – Tick
8. Hot scenes – Tick
9. The hero both being sweet and an as* – Tick
10. The heroine both being naïve and smart – Tick
So, with all these ingredients, there comes a sweet romance. The problem is I just couldn’t feel it. It didn’t press the right buttons for me. It sounded like everything was planned correctly (maybe overplanned?) but it lacked something.
Originality?
Maybe because of all the clichés, maybe because of all the coincidences (view spoiler) , maybe because of its easy predictability, it felt lacking. I predicted everything after the first 25%, and I had to read it all just to see I was 100% right about all my predictions. This "I know this will happen now" feeling of mine totally decreased my joy of reading.
I don’t want to do any injustice to the book and I know many people will love it, because there is not much to criticize and it is mostly fun so maybe I have read too many similar books to it and that is why, it sounded unoriginal to me…
My actual grading is 3,5 but because it never felt like a "4", I am giving it 3 stars (I really wish gr would give us the opportunity of half stars )
You can still give it a try whenever in the mood for a sweet and fun romance with a little angst.

“Were you just checking out my ass?”
“Do you want me to lie?”
“No.”
“It’s a great ass.”
“ You’re an ass, you know that?”
“Then I must be a great ass. Because it takes one to know one.”
“Do women tend to find your behavior attractive?”
“I’m handsome and rich. Women tend to find that attractive. You’d be surprised how much I can get away with.”
“You are so full of yourself.”
“Maybe, but it’s true.”
“Tell the truth. If I was short, bald, broke, and toothless with a hump on my back, you’d have told me off after catching me looking at your ass.”
“You’re an egomaniac.”
“Maybe. But an attractive one.”

Well, here it is, dear Kelly ... Are we on the same boat :)) ??
Sorry to hear this one fell flat for you :(
I've been in the mood for historical recently...Now I'm looking around for a new "book adventure" and this book doesn't sound "amazeballs" enough ^LOL^
Great review!!! ;D
Oh, maybe you would love it, give it a try some time, maybe I have read more than enough similar books and this didn't feel any better than the average sweet romance book... But no need to rush, of course :)
Oh darling, I hope I didn't do any injustice because it just didn't click for me but it may, for many people... It is too difficult to write a review sometimes, feeling a book, loving it, getting attached to it is sometimes too personal...
Oh, you have more pages yet, Ok, let's wait and see what feelings you will end up with... :))
I read Vi Keeland's previous book Bossman and gave it 2 stars without a review because I couldn't be bothered. A friend asked me why and this was my reply: "Very formulaic, run-of-the-mill. Basically, I was bored. I found the dialogues very unoriginal as well as the characters and the plot was also meh. It isn't bad but nothing that knocked me off my feet either."
Wonderful review :)
You also specified why you felt detached so... definitely no injustice done!! ;D
The blurb already hadn't impressed me and, like you, I've read tons of books with that "recipe" you mentioned.
Right now I'm looking for something different...a spark of originality that catches my attention, an adventure I haven't yet experienced, something I haven't read in a while...
I'll probably try the "Marriage games" duet... I'm in a kinky mood XDXDXDXD
I read Vi Keeland's previous book [book:Bo..."
Yes, yes, I can copy your answer for Bossman and paste it here, because it is my reason exactly. I gave Bossman 3 stars and it didn't impress me much, either.
Actually, I loved some books of this writer (The Baller & Stuck-up Suit) but they now started to sound too much alike ....
Atta girl, go kinky :))))
Thank you so much for your support, Miss Rail, I feel better now :))) I actually know what I want but it comes once in a month or so. I need a book like Vicious or Black Swan Affair or The Hating Game, something to knock me off my feet, something that will make me feel a lot!!!
Good luck to us all in our next reads :)))
It may work for you, darling, I don't know? I am just in need of something different now. I have read books like this more than enough. Too formulaic doesn't work for me any more!
Exactly! Those were all amazing reads for me. Great review, Dilek! If you find a book like the above, definitely let me know! ;)

Oh, they were real gems, hard to find ones as good... But you should totally read Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma and Rule Breakers series by Roya Carmen, they are out of the box with their unique plot and they are very successfully written.
And maybe you can also try these 4 books below, they may not be as magnificent as Vicious or Black Swan Affair or The Hating Game but still they are very good books, I really loved them.
And whenever you come across a gem like those 3 books, please let me know :)
1. Wicked Beautiful by J.T. Geissinger
2. My Time in the Affair by Stylo Fantome
3. A Love So Tragic by Stevie J. Cole
4. Love Me to Death by Sharlay

Awesome. I'll check them out! :)

Ok, if you cannot read cheating, then, number 2 & 3 are not safe... Rule Breakers is far from being safe :)))))) Ask me anything if you have doubts...
Oh really? Thank you for sharing it here, it is good to know I am not alone :)
Oh, thank you so much Anna, it is good to know :)))
Great review Dilek. Love your honesty.
x"
Thanks a lot for your trust, my dear but there are a lot many people who loved it more than me, but there is a growing group with 3 star ratings, as well :))) Your call, of course :)
