Hope * Survival * Love * Faith

Well that was another enlightening, emotional, and an absolutely awesome 5* read!

BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY by RUTA SEPETYS is a deeply moving, compelling, heart-wrenching, and a powerful read which is beautifully written that captured my heart from the very first chapter. This was definitely another page-turner and extremely hard to put down.

“A tiny sliver of gold appeared between shades of gray on the horizon.”

BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY is a brilliant title for this novel. If we are able to see beyond the black and white of the immoral behaviour we just might be able to see a little bit of human kindness peaking out between the many shades of gray.

“Whether love of friend, love of country, love of God, or even love of enemy—love reveals to us the truly miraculous nature of the human spirit.”

BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY has us following along the story of Lina, a fifteen-year old girl along with her mother and brother who are deported from Lithuania to Siberia in 1941 by the NKVD, Soviet Secret Police covering a part of history that most people are not familiar with.

“Sure we were safe.  Safe in the arms of hell.”

I really enjoyed the format of this novel which was written in very short chapters and narrated in the voice of Lina. RUTA SEPETYS delivers another unforgettable story here that was easy to follow along with the storyline and all the characters involved.

To sum it all up it was a well-researched, heartbreaking, shocking, and an emotional read with a tear-jerker but satisfying ending. Would recommend!!

Malia I need to read this. Salt to the Sea was so good, but so sad, it's made me wary of delving into her other books. How do you like it so far?

Norma Hi Malia, I am not far into it yet but so far it has grabbed my attention. I couldn't decide which book to read next after going through all my books and chose this one. I agree Salt to Sea was really good but sad. I think this one might be an emotional read as well.

I know Mary with me having so many books to read it is sometimes really hard to know which one to read next. I am so glad that I read this one. It was such a pleasure to read even though the subject matter was a little tough to handle the author did a wonderful job portraying this piece of history. Thanks so much, Mary! I have been told I read too fast...... lol I don't watch much TV....I read!

Canadian Jen Great review!! I know this is YA and I've hesitated but I've seen too many great reviews to ignore!

Karen Jen wrote: "Great review!! I know this is YA and I've hesitated but I've seen too many great reviews to ignore!"

I can't believe this is YA, you would never know. Years ago when I used to belong to Doubleday Book Club, they had a list of books that they called "Blue Ribbon Award" books and this was on it, as well as many others of my now favorite books. You will like this Jen!

I did read Out of the Easy - I liked it, but it's very different from her other two books. Not historical at all. I feel that is where she strives, historical fiction. I felt let down just a bit by Salt to the Sea but I think I had very high expectations after reading this one. I have read that she is working on another historical fiction book, which is wonderful news. Hope you like Out of the Easy - will be looking for your review.

Oh I am excited to hear that she is working on another historical fiction! Thank you, I hope that I enjoy Out of the Easy too! :)

Cheri Terrific review, Norma, for a breathtakingly lovely and heartbreakingly sad story.

Norma Thank you so much, Cheri! I know I loved this book! :)

Cat Freeman This sounds like something I would love. I love historical fiction, and I know a little bit about the historical events surrounding the plot, but not as much as I'd like. This was a great review, Norma!

Natalie Richards Great review. I loved this too :-)

Norma Thank you so much, Cat! It was such a good book to love! I think you should enjoy it too! I know that I definitely wish that I knew more about this historical event that is what is so awesome about historical fiction! I always learn something!

Norma Thank you so much, Natalie! I am so glad that you enjoyed this book too!

박서연 I also read this book very well. I think this book is meaningful. The narrative method of this book was also very good . For my case, I especially thought about meaning of the title. I think, maybe the writer wanted to show the situation of Lina, by giving two similar word 'shades ' and 'gray'. Lina, she is in the middle. Next to her, there is the black which is the despair and also there is the white, the light. So the writer wanted to talk us the situation of them, who were in the same situation with Lina by the title. How about you, what do you think about the title?

Norma I really enjoyed reading your insight into the title of this book! I can definitely understand and relate to your take on it. I think the title was brilliant for this book as it was very appealing and extremely insightful to the book in its entirety.

Seobin Lee You are right. I was also really satisfied with this book. So thanks to the author, we both have fully enjoyed this book. And especially for me, I was able to know about Lithuania for the first time, and its history about the Second World War. In my case, I've always had hardship in learning and studying the history. But, fortunately, in this book, it was easy for me to understand because of its impressive story. So maybe I've got two big presents from the author. But, maybe, a lot big and more! So, from now on, I think we should recommend this book to many people, and introduce them get real satisfaction from this book. It will be really good for many people. Thank you for your sympathetic, and useful review!

Seung Hyun Lee I totally agree with you that the title is brilliant. Before reading it, I did not know what the title means or tries to represent, but when I read the sentence with the same expression at the end of the book, I could understand it all. Plus, like you did, I liked how this book was written in the perspective of Lina. The eyes of a little girl, I think, contributed a lot in making this book more heartbreaking.

Tammy What a wonderful heartfelt review, Norma! 👏🏻💗

Jeannie Nice review, I loved this one too!
