A Boy in Winter
by
I held my breath at one point a little more than halfway through this short but extremely powerful story. I was stunned, perhaps expecting it, but not ready for it. Who could be, really ? Certainly not the crowd of Jews rounded up by the Nazis in this small town in Ukraine in 1941 as the German occupation begins. Everything that happens before this slowly leads up to it and everything after it is burdened by it. A few days in the lives of a few people, experiencing fear and confusion, the desire to survive, to save oneself and loved ones is seen through the eyes of a Jewish family, a farm girl, and a German engineer in charge of building roads.
I can't manage to find any other words besides heartbreaking, gut wrenching but there are touching moments and in some way it is also hopeful with the strength and determination, courage and defiance of Pohl, the engineer, Yasia, the farm girl and Yankel, the defiant young boy of the title. He refuses to let the Germans carry off his little brother - " ... no Germans must ever haul Momik. " I can't explain why I read so many holocaust stories. They are so hard to read but yet I am compelled because they are important.
I received an advanced copy of this book from Little Brown through NetGalley.

Just seen this is no longer available on netgalley. Shame. Great review, Angela. I know what you mean about holocaust stories. It's like we need someone to explain how it happened but of course no one ever can.

Gemma, thanks . Yes too bad it's no longer available. I believe it was a "read now " title as Little Brown almost always declines me . Not just the why but I still think we need to be reminded.
You always tempt with 5 stars A but I have sworn off any more Holocaust stories. At least for several years.

Gemma, to illustrate my continued declines from Little Brown, I was just refused a title - oh well , lots to read anyway.
C, I know they are so hard to read but I am drawn and my heart is broken with every one but I can't help myself.
Angela , Your review is wonderful! I've also been trying to stay away from WWI books but this one I've got to read.
I'm flabbergasted you get turned down by anyone, Angela. You write such brilliant reviews. It makes me feel a bit better at how often I get turned down though!
Great, heartfelt review Angela. I'm trying to resist adding but I think your 5 stars have more power than I have strength to resist.
Gemma , you're so kind ! Thanks so much . There are several publishers that always reject me . They have policies on who they approve . Some want librarians, booksellers, bloggers . It only bothers me if it's an author I really like . Can't complain too much as I always have plenty to read . If it's something I really want , I can buy it or borrow it .
Angela, I feel the same about reading Holocaust stories. The best I can explain it is to say it is important to bear witness to this vile part of history in the hope that it never occurs again.
So beautiful and heartfelt, Angela, and I feel much like you do. I have to pace them out further, though - I am not as brave as you.
Jennifer , thanks. Really is .
Diane, thanks . Glad I could reciprocate- lol !
Bette, a good way to put it . Feel the same way .

I absolutely agree, Angela, and your reviews are always so excellent, I'm sure it is helping to keep the focus and importance alive for others.

Me too, Angela. There are so many same stories but always with heartbreaking differences that many can reflect something new in such a dark period in history. The courage and bravery so many showed during this time. Thanks for the add.
Thanks for sharing this book with us, Angela, and for your beautiful, thoughtful review. I added it too!
"I was stunned, perhaps expecting it, but not ready for it."
I think that sums up the intrigue for me. Great review, Angela.

Heartfelt review. Like you, I keep reading holocaust because it is so critical but currently I have reached my saturation for awhile anyway. I acknowledge your fortitude.
I did just pick up The Baker's Secret from the library. I say one thing and yet I, too, am drawn to this reprehensible time in history. It so tugs at all of my deepest emotions. In between, I do need some happy, however.
Deyanne, I agree . I need others books in between too . I haven't read that one yet but it's on my list .
Excellent story. I rarely read Holocaust stories, I find them heartwrenching, it takes me a while to recover.
Bianca, thanks . I find them heart wrenching as well but some of the stories are uplifting too , especially when focusing on the courage of people in the resistance.
