I.... have no fucking clue how I felt about this book. Because, hey, beginning? Awesome. Ending? Trash heap that ruined the book for me.

Let’s talk.

The first half of this book was - honestly - excellent. You can read a thousand reviews talking about it, so I’ll keep it short. The writing is honestly stunning, much better - in my opinion - than Gillian Flynn or Paula Hawkins’ styles. I had no clue where the mystery was going. And the lead characters, Rob Ryan and his partner / best friend Cassie Maddox were super compelling - and no romance, bonus point! I especially adored Cassie fucking Maddox; her backstory with a friend from college honestly broke my heart. All the ingredients for a perfect book. Maybe even a five. I like the characters and I like the writing, so I should have liked this book, right?

I am going to try to explain this as spoiler-free [and what spoilers exist are noted] as possible: the ending of this book is maybe one of the most unsatisfying things I have ever read in my whole life. I am not kidding when I say it was such total trash that it ruined the whole book for me.

Not. One. Thing. Is. Resolved. Rob Ryan’s character arc? Flop. My wife Cassie Maddox’s character arc? Long sigh. My favorite pair of besties? I don’t want to talk about it. Mystery? Fine, sort of chilling, but also 1) not really a mindfuck and 2) has shitty connotations. The commupence? Non-ex-is-tent.

And the worst part? The mystery from twenty years ago that causes this entire fucking BOOK and that was way more interesting than the normal mystery? Literally no fucking resolution. Who did it? How did they do it? What is up with that hair clip in the forest and the blood inside Rob’s shoes? NO ONE FUCKING KNOWS. I’m sure this is framed in the minds of many readers as some kind of deeper meaning about memory. You know what I thought, honestly? Tana French wrote herself into a corner with a fucking ridiculous case and then ran out of time on her deadline and decided to leave it open.

How not to write a decent crime book 101.

And…….. so the only actual thing that is wrapped up is the current case, which is the only thing in this entire goddamn book that wraps up and I still don’t like it. It’s tagged. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. (view spoiler)

And also, there is so much weird misogyny. I’m chalking this up to “this was written in 2006” but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t care. Rosalind is the epitome of an I’m Not Other Girls character to the point where she actually says that line. And Cassie’s ending… is so shitty. Again, MAJOR SPOILER: (view spoiler) Because what’s the point of a female character if they’re not contributing to the manpain?

The two stars rather than one is a reflection of me loving the beginning. The ending of this book can go die in a hole. That is all I have to say.

Tiffany Brooks Ah, thank god someone else agrees!!! the ending to this book drives me crazy. it ruins all the amazing pages that came before it, I was so sad :(

message 15: by Izzy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Izzy you should try to read the second one!! it’s much better than the first, plus it follows cassie who is basically the one person who’s not trash in this series (although i do enjoy those trashy cops quite a bit)

message 19: by Mel (new)

Mel Anie I hate those moments when you read a book and it leaves you with opposed feelings. Hope that your next reading will be better.

message 20: by Elle (new) - rated it 2 stars

Elle (ellexamines on TT & Substack) thank you so much, Mel 💚 and I hate that moment so much too. you had me in the bag and then you FAILED

message 21: by Zev (new)

Zev Ignore this and the next three. Books five and especially six of this series are where it's at.

message 22: by Elle (new) - rated it 2 stars

Elle (ellexamines on TT & Substack) @Zev ooooh, I have a copy of book six I got through a library sale? maybe that!

message 23: by Matt (new) - rated it 5 stars

Matt Sorry you did not enjoy this one, Elise. French is certainly not for all readers.

message 24: by Elle (new) - rated it 2 stars

Elle (ellexamines on TT & Substack) @Matt I’m certainly hoping some of her other work will be – I did love her writing.

Crowinator I love all of her books but this one is definitely the most divisive. I would say try her others ones. They all build on each other, because the narrator of the next book is one of the less focused on detectives in the prior book. The Likeness, the second one, has an implausible premise but I was surprised by how well she pulled it off. The Secret Place and The Trespasser are my two favorite though.

Crowinator Oh, and based on something you said above, you should read The Secret Place and then The Trespasser if you want all the context - they concern the same two detectives.

Jamie Dacyczyn Haha, I really enjoyed Tana French's books, but I can see how someone would be frustrated. The unresolved ending was frustrating...but not unrealistic. Sometimes we just never find out what happens.

message 28: by Elle (new) - rated it 2 stars

Elle (ellexamines on TT & Substack) @Crowinator oh that’s good to know. thank you!

message 29: by Elle (new) - rated it 2 stars

Elle (ellexamines on TT & Substack) @Jamie well, of course, but this is a novel. not resolving anything might be realistic, sure, but it’s incredibly unsatisfying to an audience member. I would qualify leaving everything unresolved or, as in the case of the mystery, badly resolved, as being fairly bad writing.

The Girl with the Sagittarius Tattoo Wow, my reaction to this book is practically a duplicate of yours. So many people love this book that I was starting to wonder if it was just me!

it seems so weird to me that no one else noticed?? idk

message 32: by Matt (new) - rated it 5 stars

Matt Sorry you did not like this one. It takes a certain type of reader to admire French, which is the glory of Goodreads and free expression.

message 33: by Erin (new) - rated it 5 stars

Erin I recall being frustrated by the ending too. But somehow French keeps me coming back for more. Excellent review!

message 34: by Bruce (new) - rated it 1 star

Bruce Hatton Excellent review. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who was bitterly disappointed by the way it ended.

i do like her writing a lot - I think i'll try a couple of her other books. this just did not work for me ://

Bruce wrote: "Excellent review. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who was bitterly disappointed by the way it ended."

thank you, Bruce! I'm somewhat surprised the ending isn't more controversial - love for this one seems pretty universal.

Rukky I just finished this and I have never agreed with a review so much before. That ending was so awful and disappointing. (view spoiler)

Karilyn Ro I just finished this book and am reading through reviews trying to figure out that line on page 246 “I took it for granted, at the time, that she dreamed the guy followed through on his threat.” Etc. And then Cassie says his name is Legion. What does that have to do with anything, help?

Jamie hi hello I recently found your blog and stumbled onto this review – I definitely see your criticisms and while I don't 100% agree with all of them I can understand where you're coming from.

That being said, if you loved Cassie (I do too) I super recommend the next book – THE LIKENESS. It's her POV, I read it first, and I loved it a lot more. I came back to read IN THE WOODS because I was always interested in the backstory alluded to in THE LIKENESS, but it's 100% Cassie's story and I think deals with some of the qualms you have about her arc here (I agree, it is.......... not my favorite).

The Likeness

Kim YES. Exactly!!!

message 41: by Elle (new) - rated it 2 stars

Elle (ellexamines on TT & Substack) @Kim I’m glad I’m not alone in this!!

message 42: by Elle (new) - rated it 2 stars

Elle (ellexamines on TT & Substack) @Jamie I have The Likeness on my longlist – thank you for mentioning your thoughts on her character, that’s really good to know!! I do love the writing of this, so I’m sure I’ll like some of her other material – this particular narrative just really didn’t click well with me.

Samantha Zee I felt the same about the ending, tho I didn't rate it low because of it because I figured we'd find out the older story in another book since this is a series. NOPE. I think I read that we never even hear from Rob again so your theory of her running out of time on her deadline sounds about right. Still frustrating though. -.-

message 44: by Elle (new) - rated it 2 stars

Elle (ellexamines on TT & Substack) @Samantha it truly is frustrating!! the setup of this book is just so wonderfully well written that the bad ending pisses me off, tbh.

Ellen Your review encompasses every single problem I had with this book, so thanks for that. I hadn't even considered the gross implications behind Rosalind's behavior, but her characterization is definitely another mark in the 'nope, not for me' box. And how the hell do you write a murder mystery without a) busting the criminal mastermind in addition to the actual murderer or b) SOLVING THE MORE INTERESTING MYSTERY THAT ACTS AS A FRAMING DEVICE FOR THE ENTIRE STORY? *throws hands in the air*

RIGHT RIGHT RIGHT?? it's so deeply unsatisfying on like.... all points, and it just feels lazy as hell

message 47: by d. (new) - rated it 3 stars

d. Ugh!! Finding reviews that match my feelings of this book and you nailed it.

Tammy I couldn't have said it any better. The most disappointing book I think I have ever read.

Brenda 'You have summarized exactly what I felt about this book. It was so gripping and well-written but ultimately totally disappointing.

message 50: by Ann (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ann Lee Your review is SO spot-on! Ugh, I just finished it, and I'm dying for resolution!! I held on to every word till the bitter end, but nope! I'm left hanging here!
