I had to push myself through this, to be honest. I want to continue with the story/world, but I could have done without this volume, I think. I said in the last one that my tolerance for unlikable, horrible characters is at an all-time low, and that's basically all this volume was. I get the allusions to Animal Farm and Lord of the Flies, and all that, and I even get why this was an aspect of the Fables that needed to be explored, but I just felt very anxious reading it, and wanted to be done.
Also, I hate Rose Red. I don't care how it turns out in the end, she's the worst. (Aside from maybe Goldilocks.)

I've heard that before, actually. I think when I first started reading this series, I was fairly new to comics and it just wasn't strong enough -- artistically or in story -- for me to want to stick with it, and NOW I'm so Trumped-out on awful people that I'm hesitant to really commit. Also, Bill Willingham as a person leaves a bad taste in my mouth, so I was on the fence about reading it and supporting him thusly. BUT I'm a fairy tale person, so it seems inevitable...
Yeah, being a "gritty" retelling about fairy tale characters as fairly awful people is kind of this series' thing. I mean, I'm all for adding complexities and nuance, and I think it will have enough in the way of rootforable characters and arcs to win me over, but I'm just awful-peopled out.
