Straight up, I wasn't going to read this book...but I was too curious. So, I did something I rarely do and read some friend's reviews and all it took was seeing the work "angst" and I was in! However, I wasn't exactly excited because some the reviews weren't that good and had me a bit worried.
I do have to say that Saffron A. Kent has a way with words even if sometimes it's a bit awkward, she knows how to make the story flow.
Evie and Abel see each other when he moves to her small town after his parents were killed in a car crash...his infamous parents that is. Infamous for being two cousins living together as brother and sister who ran off and got married. In this small, very religious town, it's the ultimate sin and Abel is the ultimate monster. He's treated horribly by almost everyone, however, Evie is entranced.
She doesn't see a monster at all and soon they are spending lots of stolen moments together in her tree house in the woods. At this point of the story, Evie is twelve and Abel is fourteen and still able to fit inside the tree house. Unfortunately, that doesn't last very long.
They're able to make things work, somehow, and the years pass by and Evie is almost eighteen. That's when all hell breaks loose and it's not pretty, not pretty at all.
The only other book I've read of the author's is Unrequited and like that one, this one is also about forbidden things. However, this one takes a left turn to the very dark side. I was surprised I didn't catch a whiff of it from any reviews I read so, bravo! I still wouldn't have been prepared. I've read that Abel and Evie (yes, think Adam and Eve) were like two different people and I agree a little and I disagree a little.
Abel is a lot to take. Having to live in that environment, to feel isolated, to feel like a monster and to not be with the person you love especially during your teenage years has taken a toll. Add into the mix, that he is quite the caveman and well, his behavior is not surprising.
What was surprising is Evie. She went from this very shelter girl to this, well, extremely not sheltered woman...putting everything out there. It just was bizarro and a bit over the top.
The book is broken up into four parts, Parts 1-3 and then a "sort of" epilogue chapter. I was just a little disappointed in that we didn't get more of them after all that.
There is going to be a book about Evie's best friend, Sky, and her nemesis, Duke, called God Amongst Men, coming out Fall 2018. It would be amazing if we get some updates on Evie and Abel.
