Cabin 12 (Rock Point, #2)

Just when I think I can pick out my favorite book by Freya Barker, she comes out with one that outshines my favorite. Jasper and Bella's story is just that book. Not only does this master storyteller spin an amazing romance, but she weaves in a stellar suspense plot that offers surprises all the way through the book. There are so many layers to Cabin 12 and each reveal is like unwrapping a Christmas present. Ms. Barker hits a lot of topics in this book: depression, family dynamics, foster care, sexual harassment, and corruption. She weaves them together flawlessly into a great romantic suspense story that keeps the reader on their toes throughout.
Bella is the youngest of the Gomez clan, a loud, loving family with a matriarch that is more like a bull in a china shop than a doting mother. At thirty-seven her family often forgets she isn't a child anymore. However, her interactions with her father are priceless. I think he may be my favorite of the family not living in Durango. A paramedic she faces life and death situations every day, and unfortunately some hit close to home and rock Bella to the core.
Jasper met Bella and sparks flew, not necessarily in a positive way when they first met. As the story progresses that changes but coming from vastly different backgrounds, and given their shared circle of family and friends, there are concerns. Add in a serial killer targeting police officers and things really heat up.
Ms. Barker creates characters that are mature and have dealt with issues in their lives. They know what they want and they don't play games to reach their HEA. Her characters quickly become like old friends and she pulls the reader into the story from page one. Reading a book by this author is like eating a potato chip, when your done, you will want another book right away. Read this book and see what I mean.
