...meanwhile, inside of the Fetish Cafe...

Waitress : Miss? Are you ready to order?

Me : (clearing throat) Um, I think so? Can you tell me first if there are any off-the-menu specials tonight?

Waitress : Nothing extra tonight. Our supplier didn't deliver today, so we're running low on supplies. If you're looking for a fantasy involving props, chances are, it's not going to happen.

Me : It's fine. That's not really my thing. (pause) Uh...I think I'll take the kidnapping special. With an order of dominant male. Preferably tall, dark, handsome, and pushy...you know the drill. The alpha type.

Waitress : Big spender, aren't we? Anything else? (says sarcastically) Would you like fries with your order?

Me : Yes, please. Can I get some gravy with that on the side? Brown, not white.

Waitress : (appearing a bit confused) Whatever. It's your fetish.

Me : Oh no. The fries aren't part of it. I'm just hungry.

.....

Trigger warning : content borders on rapey (yes, it's a word, dammit)

Eh, what can I say? A Hunger was a fun and fluffy read. There's no real substance here, but when comparing this to other pnr, it's on par with others that I've liked. Which is not bad, considering I've been on a serious adult pnr break lately after trying a few I didn't like. They're all starting to read the same and I've passed on most of the ones which haven't had more of an urban fantasy bent. Straight-up adult romance novels (in most every genre) have been pretty disappointing to me lately, so I've chosen not to go there. Until now. I saw a few friends talking about this one and figured I'd give it a shot.

I find it funny that if this book were realistic fiction, I would rip it up one side and down the other for having such a horrible male lead. As in : NO ONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK. The male lead is pushy, demanding, forceful, and about 20 other things which would have any female running for the hills in absolute horror. If some guy (or girl) pulled this act on me or anyone I know, I'd call the cops and have him (or her) locked up.

But of course, I tend to cave a little for fantasy based books. What can I say? I have a thing for alpha men in pnr and historicals. Plus, this one had an ancient scottish brogue! Well, hellooooo highlander. Thank you for showing up in my kidnap story.

At least, in this book, I get to give the double argument for his lack of decorum.

1. It's pnr. These aren't guys raised in polite society. They're driven by instinct that overwhelms them. Bad excuse? Sure. But hey, it's the basis for most pnr shifter stories. The devil made them do it, or some other nonsense. We laugh at it, we find it far-fetched, we'd hate it if any man in real life treated us like this, but darnit...it's fun to read about in books.

2. The dude is old. Like pre-dating historical bodice-ripping, non-con storylines, OLD. As in, "he came from the dirt" old. Historical fiction readers know that men from the past weren't as clued in to the equality of men and women. They always seem to need a woman to school them. And our heroine in this story did, in fact, school her man.

Who I'd recommend this book to :

People who don't mind aggressive alphas in their pnr and can forgive some serious bad behavior if the hero shows some sign of remorse or willingness to change later.

Who I'd warn away from the book :

Anyone who has a previous history of abuse, whether physical or sexual. The hero(?) did push the boundaries of sex and crossed some lines that he shouldn't have. The book danced that line of danger a little too close for comfort at times (view spoiler)

Anyone who rolls their eyes at old stereotypes of cavemen-type males. I'm warning you - you will hate this book. It's okay to steer clear. In fact, why are you even reading this review? You might want to go shower all of the gunk off now. Hurry!

No, really. I don't blame anyone who would find this book distasteful. Only us fluff cravers are going to enjoy A Hunger. And enjoy, I did.

Leea I hope you like it. I have stopped reading this series at about book 5. I might pick them back up again because I keep hearing they get better and better.

Stacia (the 2010 club) Even though I'm pretty much spent on trying many more adult pnr (still liking adult uf though), I'm going to give it a chance. I actually have a twisted thing for kidnapping fantasies, so it might be something I end up liking and feeling guilty about, heh.

Leea The sex is HOT in these... really really hot. Enjoy! Yeah, i'm turning into more of an UF girl myself. I haven't read PNR in awhile, it's so hit or miss. Although, with most series the first book is always the worst, imo.

Regina Guilt is not necessary. Just enjoy. We all have our kinks. The kidnapping theme is not hardcore in this book. It kept me away for years, but when I read it I did not think it was done in a scary way.

How is it going for you? Affecting you like most PNR?

Stacia (the 2010 club) I'm about 30% in and honestly don't think the kidnapping was that bad. He got close to hurting her and forcing her, but hasn't crossed that line yet. He seems to be softening, actually, so it's kind of cute.

Regina I agree. It was the idea of it that kept me away. I still don't like the use of the kidnapping theme as a plot element toward romance, but I was able to dismiss it and just enjoy the story.

Stacia (the 2010 club) Okay, I got nervous there for a second when there was the "got her drunk" scene. I was about to put the book down if he went there, but...phew.

Regina Oh wow, I forgot about that scene. But he had planned to, right? How did I forget that?

Stacia (the 2010 club) He had planned on it. That's why I was nervous. It's hard to give redemption if a person never makes an effort to show any sign of control. He had a few testy moments, but never got to a point where I felt him unforgivable.

And a note on the kidnapping thing - I don't actually have a fantasy of wanting to be kidnapped (especially by a stranger!), but I like reading books with this theme as a fantasy. My kinks aren't that off the wall in real life, haha. I could only imagine someone reading this and thinking I was extremely warped if I actually wanted it to happen.

Regina Yes now I remember. It was that scene, the kidnapping theme and the lack of concern for her true desires that brought it down for me. I remember being very surprised that I enjoyed this book as much as I did. Your review captured exactly what I felt about the book and LMAO, the dialogue/scene is PERFECT.

I gotcha as to kinks v. kinks in books.

Stacia (the 2010 club) Thanks, and I agree that it was better than expected. I thought it was so much better than the first Dark Hunter book, which I wasn't too crazy about.

Regina Good comparison, that is (something like DH or Gena Showalter or Lara Adrian -- or others I am not a fan of) what I was expecting when I read this book.

Are you planning to read on?

Stacia (the 2010 club) I think I will. Probably not all at once, but this is the type of series that I could probably pick up here and there when I'm craving an escape, sort of like how I am with Kleypas historicals when I'm in a certain mood. I might go back and read the prequel Warlord Wants Forever before going on to the next book though. I'm interested in Myst's backstory.

Regina I haven't read that one either. Not sure why. I may have set myself up for failure this month, but I am planning on reading two PNRs: No Rest for the Wicked (Immortals After Dark, #3) by Kresley Cole Firelight (Darkest London, #1) by Kristen Callihan

Hopefully I enjoy them.

Leea Well, hellooooo highlander. Thank you for showing up in my kidnap story.
Haha!! Great review!

When Funmi Met Romance LOL love your review. I must say this series is delicious and each book is of equal or better calibur for sure! You have to get to her newest book Lothaire (Immortals After Dark, #12) by Kresley Cole he is tall , hot , powerful, controlling, super kidnapper, i mean the definition of alpha is Lothaire. You will LOVE that book :)

Stacia (the 2010 club) I actually have all of the books, even the newest one, so I'll definitely get there at some point. :)

Regina, maybe I'll try to fit in Firelight around the same time you read it, so we can compare notes.

Regina Stracia that would be great. My goal is before the pub date.

Leea How did I miss this review... You may have to change your avatar to the waitress again, darlin' lol!

Stacia (the 2010 club) The truck stop waitress?

message 21: by Leea (new) - rated it 4 stars

Leea Yep

Stacia (the 2010 club) I think I deleted that pic a while back. It was kind of grainy.

message 23: by Leea (new) - rated it 4 stars

Leea We'll have to find you another. Lol!

Vallsykes Good one, Stacia. The dialogue addition, very funny and right!

Stacia (the 2010 club) Thanks! I see you've read this one as well. Are you a fan of the rest of the series? I keep meaning to pick up the next one but always get sidetracked.

Vallsykes Side-tracked, also. Few years back, I was a voracious reader of Kenyon's Dark Hunter series (still luv SK) and I kept seeing Kresley Cole's books. IDK, what put me off since some of my friends had recommended them. Maybe b/c they seemed a bit campy or not "dark" enough,... or as complex as I like my PNR. Yet, I do plan to try the next book in the series soon. One thing I do like is the addition of the Valkyrie lore.

Kristen I give up! I tried to write a comment 3 times only to have it say error. Lets see if GR will allow me to post yet.

Kristen Okay. It did. Such my luck when I'm being all snarky. Lol. Great review, sweetie.

Stacia (the 2010 club) That's okay. I understand all about GR error. Thanks. :)

message 30: by Jadas (new) - rated it 1 star

Jadas THANKS for that I am huge on humor in my reviews it 2am and if was a much needed reprieve from my hours of aimless searching listopia for my next read and I also added this to my To-read shelf

Stacia (the 2010 club) Haha. You're welcome. Looks like you weren't a fan though. Ah well. Guess you win some, lose some. :)

twelvejan, no I haven't. Sorry I didn't see your message. I'm burned out on pnr cheese for the moment and have been sticking with uf for the most part. But I hear that the book after this has a beta hero, so I'm curious.

message 32: by Kathyjacks (new) - added it

Kathyjacks Nice review!

Stacia (the 2010 club) Thanks Kj. :)

Nichole ~Bookaholic~ Love your review! I need to get back to this series....I've read the first two but it's been awhile audible recently had a sale on all the audios so I got all but the most recent one @ $4.95 each....now I just need to find the time

Stacia (the 2010 club) Ty! I did the same thing - I read the first two and then didn't touch the series for a couple of years. I recently made a promise to myself to start wrapping up series that I have in progress because there are SO many of them, so I'm tackling these series one at a time now. This has been fun so far. I'm about to finish book 4 already.

Maria Taylor Have read them all. I love these books. I look forward to seeing what Nix is up to in all of them.

Stacia (the 2010 club) I'm on the new release book right now (15, I think?). I'm just way behind in reviewing the last few. It's been a fun series. Nix is a favorite character for sure.
