it was amazing
bookshelves: favorites, thrillers, fantasy, mysteries

If I had to pick JUST ONE book that was my favorite (with a gun to my head, obviously, which is the only way I could ever choose between my favorite books) I would choose this one. It blew me away the first time I read it, and it continues to blow me away each and every time I pick it up. I'm getting all shivery right now, just thinking of reading it.

My favorite quote -- "We all start out knowing magic. We are born with whirlwinds, forest fires, and comets inside us. We are born able to sing to birds and read the clouds and see our destiny in grains of sand. But then we get it the magic educated right out of our souls. We get it churched out, spanked out, washed out, and combed out. We get put on the straight and narrow and told to be responsible. Told to act our age. Told to grow up, for God's sake. And you know why we were told that? Because the people doing the telling were afraid of our wildness and youth, and because the magic we knew made them ashamed and sad of what they'd allowed to wither in themselves."

Kelly Yes yes yes....Beautifuly said. I have a hard time expressing the passion I feel at times. You expressed not only what I feel about this book, but my idea on life as well.

Kristi Agreed! I could have written this review word for word :)

Kathy Szoo I'm just starting to read it now. I loved that quote!

Rhiannon You've just sold me!

Alex Thanks for this review - one of the reasons I started the book in the first place. :)
I am a half way through the book now but already have a similar sentiment about it. It's the sort of books one lives inside - it's slow paced and I am really enjoying every word of it.
Rarely I reread books but this one might be the exception as I feel I'd be willing to visit Zephir again.
It reminds me the Cannery Row by Steinbeck, which relocates the reader to a certain place and makes him/her wilfully stay there. Fabulous!

Alisa Kester You're welcome! ;) It makes me happy that I helped influence you to read it. It really is a special book.

Ryan Miller I totally agree with you. This book is also without a doubt my all time favorite read. The emotions I felt reading this put right back in my childhood and back into my hometown. This is the only, and I mean ONLY, book that has ever moved me to tears. I let a coworker read this book and he also wept like a child. Ha! such a beautiful book! I also have a copy that was signed by Robert McCammon back in 1991 that I bought on accident for one dollar. Incredible review by the way. Thank you.

Alisa Kester Thank you! It makes me happy to hear from other people who love this book. I also have a signed copy!
