WOW!! Once again, I am writing this review through my tears (happy tears). What a beautiful book and wonderful conclusion to one of the greatest love stories ever told!!!!

The first part of this book is about healing. Healing from all the traumas WW2 has left on their bodies and souls. About finding a way to emotionally find their way back to the peace of Lazarevo. Their memories haunt them like scars - unforgettable souvenirs of a war neither of them wanted to fight as they struggle to build a new life in the States with their son.

I really viewed books 1 & 2 as one story. The first ended on a cliffhanger and the story bled right into the second which ended in a way that wrapped up that part of the story. That first story really defines LOVE . Falling in love, being in love, the extremes to which a person will fight for their love.... In book 1, Tania is 17 years old while Alexander is 22, and by the end of book 2, Tania is 22 and Alexander is 27.

But book 3 is different. By the end of it, Alexander is about 85 and Tania is 80. This book is about LIFE . Its about the realities of married life based on true, all consuming love. Tania and Alexander make good decisions and some bad decisions as they struggle to find balance in their lives and to heal from the war... but through it all, it always comes back to their endlessly deep LOVE for each other. It feels like a very realistic and true story - no fairy tale here. Its gritty and INTENSELY, EXHAUSTINGLY, DEEPLY emotional .... and it all comes back to that one day, in Lenningrad, where a young officer in the Red Army crossed the street for a beautiful blond girl sitting on the bench at the bus stop eating her ice cream <3

Especially after having read books 1&2, I felt SO deeply emotionally connected to the characters that when ever they would have memories or would mention the names of people/places that had memories attached to them, I found myself bursting into tears even without realizing it. This series really makes you FEEL more strongly than any other I have ever read.

The ending is beautiful and perfect. I sobbed through the last 10 pages. Their story comes full circle with no questions left unanswered. I read this book SO slowly, savoring every word, never wanting the story to end.

Paullina Simmons is a truly gifted author. She has a way with words that I won't even try to do justice to with my own but I really think everyone should, at least once in their lives read this trilogy. I know I will definitely be rereading for the rest of my life.

Alexander and Tatiana's story through all 3 books is by leaps and bounds my absolute favorite story I have ever read... Nothing else even touches it. I have NO idea how to move on from these books...

I don't know what else to say, except if you haven't read book 1, The Bronze Hoseman, you should all really bump it to the very top of your to-read pile.

“I love you. I'm blind for you, wild for you. Sick with you. I told you that our first night together when I asked you to marry me, I am telling you now. Everything that's happened to us, everything, is because I crossed the street for you. I worship you. You know that through and through...”

Paullina Simons
“Alexander, you broke my heart. But for carrying me on your back, for pulling my dying sled, for giving me your last bread, for the body you destroyed for me, for the son you have given me, for the twenty-nine days we lived like Red Birds of Paradise, for all our Naples sands and Napa wines, for all the days you have been my first and last breath, for Orbeli- I will forgive you. ”

“He is lying on dirty straw. He has been beaten so many times, his body is one bloodied bruise; he is filthy, he is hideous, he is a sinner and he is utterly unloved. At any moment, at any instant, he will be put on a train in his shackles and taken through Cerberus's mouth to Hades for the rest of his wretched life. And it is at that precise moment that the light shines from the door of his dark cell #7, and in front of him Tatiana stands, tiny, determined, disbelieving, having returned for him. Having abandoned the infant boy who needs her most to go find the broken beast who needs her most. She stands mutely in front of him and doesn't see the blood, doesn't see the filth, sees only the man, and then he knows; he is not cast out. He is loved.”

Paullina Simons
“All grimy and sweaty, Alexander drew her to him, his palms on her back, and bending to her and tilting his head, whispered into her mouth, "Tatiasha, I know you won't believe this, but if I'm looking at the sheets when I'm making love to you, we've got a bigger problem than what damn color they are.”

Don't forget to bring extra magazines. Look at this combat vest. You can fit more than five hundred rounds. It's unbelievable. Load yourself up with ammo. Bring a few extra cartridges. You don't want to run out.
Don't forget to clean your M-16 every day. You don't want your rifle to jam."
Tatia, this is the third generation of the M-16. It doesn't jam anymore. The gunpowder doesn't burn as much. The rifle is self-cleaning."

Alexander put his hand over her mouth. "Tania," he said, "do you want to just go yourself?"
When he took the hand away, she said, "Yes."
He kissed her.
She said, "Spam. Three cans. And keep your canteen always filled with water, in case you can't get to the plasma. It'll help."

Kay Great review! This was a great book to end a beautiful love story.

Aestas Book Blog thanks Kay :) I loved this story so so much... I don't know how I'm gonna move on

message 3: by Kay (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kay I know what you mean. I was thinking about T & A for days after I finished the book.

Aestas Book Blog Quotes and scenes just keep running through my head... I think I'll give myself a few days before I even try to think about another book. And I know I'll be rereading these soon anyway....

message 5: by Kay (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kay There were so many quotes & scenes in all 3 books. It's just amazing to look back at where they started in TBH to where it ended in this book. It is all just so special, incredible and epic. *sigh* How will other love stories even compare?

Aestas Book Blog I honestly don't think they will. I think this is it for me - the absolute height of epic love stories

Zeek I think I liked this book even more than TBH altho they really are so different you cant compare. I loved it tho. ::sigh::

You'll have to get Tatiana's Table: Tatiana And Alexander's Life Of Food And Love for Tatiana's recipes and little vignettes. :)

message 8: by Aestas Book Blog (last edited Mar 14, 2012 08:18AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Aestas Book Blog Ya this book was so different than the first 2 (which I just can't separate in my mind). I liked them both for different reasons :) if I absolutely had to choose, I'd say I loved the first 2 a bit more but I still give all 3 books 10++ stars each! I wish there were more books out there as good as these... But all the books that people say come close to comparing, I've read and don't think are better so Im stuck lol

Zeek yeah i can't think of anything that compares...

I did read an ebook recently where I absolutely feel in love with the H/h just like Tatiana and Shura. It's a debut book so it has its flaws technically but it's anxsty and totally "you and me against the world" which makes me think of T&A... it's Eyes of Silver, Eyes of Gold. If you have an ereader you should try it- its only $2.99. I cant pimp it enough because it tore me up!

Aestas Book Blog I'll definitely go buy that - thanks! I don't mind mistakes etc in books so long as the characters and story are strong. Thanks!

Katherine McCarthy Great review Aestas! i understand how it feels to try and move on from a novel when you actually care about it that much. it might take a while. huggs!!

Aestas Book Blog Thanks :) ya I just can't seem to get into anything else right now. Quotes, scenes, etc from all 3 books just keep running through my head like a movie... I love when books 'take over' like that. Have you read these yet?

Leyoh Your enthusiasm is palpable Aestas. I cannot wait to spend some time on these books. What a commited review.

Aestas Book Blog Haha thank you - I really do love them!! Be sure to start with book 1 The Bronze Horseman though. They really have to be read in order. I can't imagine anyone not absolutely loving them :)

Kelly Love your review TSG is my favorite........

Aestas Book Blog Thanks Kelly :) sorry, I only saw this comment now

Kelly I'm rereading it now. I just bought it on Kindle.
My heart is being torn in two!!! They have just left Coconut Grove and are int he camper heading west.... Gosh when he recalls his time in the prisoner camp!!
I also feel so badly for Antman. Alexander doesn't have the capacity to Love him fully at this moment. But you can see that he would have been an amazing Dad! He grows into that when Pasha and Janie come along but it takes so long for him to truly heal.... I imagine you can never recover that horror!

I wish he didn't feel like such a failure at this point. I wish he could see that he has NEVER failed Tatiana, well up until Carmen anyway!

Aestas Book Blog Lol I know how you feel. I absolutely love this trilogy. I literally have no complaints. Alexander is my number one male book character. I can't wait to Reread them all. I think I'm going to wait another month and then do it. I literally can't stop thinking about them and ever book I've read since them just pales and seems bland in comparison. <3 <3 <3

I feel like their memories became my memories. I have every page of this series imprinted so strongly in my mind. Even thinking about it makes me tear up. In a good way :)

Karen I'm definitely reading this series next!!!

Brittany Aestas: the picture of the guy you see as Alexander.... Where did you find him? Do you know his name? :) I need to know!!!! And that is exactly how I picture them too!!!!

Aestas Book Blog Hey :) His name is Jamie Towers BUT I don't actually like any of his other pictures as Alexander, just this one... I don't know, from this angle, I think he's perfect for the role... from the others, he's still really handsome, but I'm not sure I see it so much

Brittany Aestas Book Blog wrote: "Hey :) His name is Jamie Towers BUT I don't actually like any of his other pictures as Alexander, just this one... I don't know, from this angle, I think he's perfect for the role... from the other..."

Omg he is just delicious in this picture :)

Aestas Book Blog I totally agree :D

Shelley Have you seen the Fifth Soviet pictures that Paullina has on her website? I was amazed at how much it looked like what I imagined in my mind. So nice to see that someone else obsesses over these books as much as me! I finished the series a year ago and still think about Tania and Alexander every day. The experience absolutely changed my life.

Aestas Book Blog I have actually but just went flicking back through them and got all teary <3 Its amazing how EXACTLY like my imagination those pictures are. And I never saw the pictures until after I read the books. Just goes to show how amazing her writing was <3

I just finished this series because of your recommendation. I am barely able to write through my tears. There is nothing I can say that will give this book or any of them in the series the justice they deserve. THANK YOU for the recommendation!!! These were AMAZING, beautiful, heart breaking, frustrating and just fantastic.

I read that first, before hearing about The Bronze Horseman. Both totally consuming series. My top 2 series.

Aestas Book Blog Sylvie - if you see this, yes, you should absolutely continue. It's a rough part but I promise it's worth it to keep going :) (Sorry, I had to delete your comment because of spoilers but I hope you still see this :) )

Sylvie OK thank you so much!

Aestas Book Blog You're welcome! :)

Alyssa I stumbled upon a spoiler that there might be cheating in this book. My chest just hurts just thinking about it. I know this is a red flag for you usually - any thoughts on this?

Natalie (view spoiler)

Alyssa Thank you Natalie, that gives me a little peace of mind.

Aestas Book Blog I agree with Natalie. I feel like the development leading up to that scene made complete sense for the story and it didn't go all the way through anyways. He stopped it -- which is the most important. And THEY worked it out together. I loved that their love wasn't fairy tale perfect and it really was SUCH a powerful turning point for them. You know how I feel about this kind of thing (its my ultimate NO-NO) but even though I was freaking out while I read it, I should have trusted the author because the way things worked out was absolutely right for the story.

Natalie Aestas Book Blog wrote: "I agree with Natalie. I feel like the development leading up to that scene made complete sense for the story and it didn't go all the way through anyways. He stopped it -- which is the most importa..."

Yes, Paullina is an amazing author, especially when it comes to historical romances. I'm SO excited for her new book, "Lone Star"'! The blurb sounds like it has the potential to be EPIC!!

Ps. I have to recommend "The Bridge to the Holy Cross" if you haven't read it yet. It's an absolute MUST if you love Alexander and Tatia. It has about 100 extra pages than "Tatiana and Alexander" with sooo many epic delated scenes from Shuras POV , like when he saw Tania for the first time, the hospital scene and when he meets Anthony, etc.

message 47: by Rhonda (new) - added it

Rhonda Ruff maybe i wont wait until after christmas But i would like to enjoy all three so excited to start If i started it now i would get nothing done

Ashlee Ward I'm about 95% through book 3...how am I supposed to move on after this series!?

Sabrina Davis Exactly Ashlee, I'm nearly finished with the series and am already book hungover. What next? How to replace? It's impossible!

I think I'll have a book break for a week to let it all settle and then start with something light and happy to distract me. Moving on is usually the way to do it or re-read :)

message 50: by Esme (new) - rated it 5 stars

Esme Yona Great review!! I just started the third book and finding it hard to put it down, I am so enjoying it. I’m a big fan of historical romance, another of my favorites is Outlander. Would just love to see this wonderful trilogy made into a TV show. Was thinking that Sam Heughan would make a great Alexander. They’d just have to dye his hair black or give him a wig 😊
