Life is simply too short (and this book, far too long).

So, Merry Christmas to myself! Robin, you don't have to finish reading this endless, labyrinthine mess tangle. Putting the book down does not mean it "beat" you. It doesn't say anything definitively bad about you, as a reader. It just means that there is limited time on this earth and other great books are calling your name. Books that don't make your eyes cross and furrow your brow in exasperation and frustration.

Mr. Rushdie, it's not me, it's you.

Changing point of view/storyline with dizzying frequency, Rushdie is forcing me to figure out what is going on every few paragraphs! I'm exhausted and only 10% in.

However, I'll keep going because many many friends have awarded it 5 stars and maybe I just need to trust the words will bring me to complete understanding, eventually . . ."

Kevin Ansbro Gulp.
I'm delighted and nervous, Robin. Hope you like it...
*crosses fingers*

Robin I know this is a sacred cow for you, Kevin, and I hope I feel the same way as you about it! Way too soon to tell, just yet. I'm acclimatising myself to the style right now (the rapid switching back and forth, in and out of scenes). I'll keep you posted!

Adina Reading this as well. Going slowly but I like it.

Terri Have not read this yet. Look forward to your review.

message 5: by Rosa (new) - added it

Rosa I'll be deeply impressed if you finish this! I don't think I made it past the 3rd page :)

Robin Rosa wrote: "I'll be deeply impressed if you finish this! I don't think I made it past the 3rd page :)"

I'll be honest, it's slow going, Rosa. Each time I return to the book, I have to re-read several pages to get myself re-acquainted. It loves to jump around. Linear is NOT how I'd describe this narrative. I will persevere, though!!

message 7: by Pedro (new)

Pedro I haven’t read Rushdie. Really looking forward to your review, Robin. I know it will be a treat whether you like it or not. 😉

message 8: by Ann (new)

Ann Started this at least 3 times over the years. Could never get into it. Finally said it was not meant to be!

message 9: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa I’ve known very few people who finished Rushdie, and the only book of his anyone ever recommended was Haroun and the Sea of Stories.

message 10: by Robin (new) - rated it 1 star

Robin I keep thinking, I made it through The Golden Notebook, so I should be able to figure this out! But so far, it's a high maintenance read.

message 11: by Ace (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ace It is hard work, I finished it eventually but I strongly disliked the whole experience!

message 12: by Robin (new) - rated it 1 star

Robin I don't give up easily, so I'm still in it to win it... but, it feels like a lot of work.

Kevin Ansbro "A high-maintenance read" is a perfect descriptor, Robin.
This book requires doors to be locked, phones switched off, friends to be ignored and partners muzzled.
I totally empathise: I've read it twice and each time had to keep thumbing back to keep up with Rushdie's burgeoning population of characters.
I wish you the best of luck!

message 14: by Beth (new)

Beth Good luck with this book Robin. It defeated me twice, and I'm no quitter either. Rushdie is never an easy read.

message 15: by Robin (new) - rated it 1 star

Robin Thank you Kevin! I appreciate your empathy. And I'm uber impressed you read this book not once but TWICE! You are an amazing reader as well as writer.

message 16: by Robin (new) - rated it 1 star

Robin Beth, thank you for your well wishes. I have to say this is the most challenging book I've read in a long time. I totally understand why someone would walk away from it in defeat!

message 17: by Ray (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ray Hang on in there, it is a dazzling and rewarding book. Intense though. It is easier on the second read.

message 18: by Robin (new) - rated it 1 star

Robin Oh, Ray. I can't even imagine reading this TWICE. I'm debating letting this one hang out to dry... even though fab reader friends like you appreciate it.

message 19: by Pedro (new)

Pedro Robin...!!! Congratulations!!! You made it!!! You left it behind!!! I’m proud of you!!! So, so proud!!!

message 20: by Pedro (new)

Pedro And, look at that rating. One star... Just like “A Little Life” (sigh). <3

Thank you, dear Pedro!! Your support in my abandoning of this book means the world. (You know it wasn't easy for me...)

Blair Love it lol

Robin Pedro wrote: "And, look at that rating. One star... Just like “A Little Life” (sigh). <3"

Yes, the same as A Little Life, but the tragedy is that I read A Little Life, cover to cover. :D

Dolors So sorry this didn't work for you Robin, I found it quite magic, but as you say, life is too short to insist on books or authors that don't click with us... Merry Christmas!

message 33: by Robin (new) - rated it 1 star

Robin Blair wrote: "Love it lol"

Glad I could give you a chuckle, Blair. I have to say, it's quite exhilarating, tossing a book of this magnitude aside! (Merry Christmas, btw... my kids are still sleeping which is why I get to be on GR now....)

Robin Kalliope wrote: "This one was OK. His later books are worse."

I've only read his recent The Golden House, which was a trial to read (but somehow, more readable than Midnight's Children). I think it's safe to say he's not for me, and that's okay.

message 40: by Robin (new) - rated it 1 star

Robin Mugdha wrote: "Oh! I was planning to read this next year. Now I am nervous 😥"

Mugdha, don't let me dissuade you from trying. I look at my friends list and many of them give it high marks! I look longingly at their 4 and 5 star reviews. sigh. Don't know how they did it...

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas, Fede. xo

message 42: by Joe (new) - rated it 5 stars

Joe your one-star rating juxtaposed against my five-star rating. two symbolic bookends with scores of readers at both ends. in the end the lesson can't be clearer; always give a gift certificate to the bookstore. {unless you are privy to a list}. happy christmas, robin! thanks for all the great reviews!

Kevin Ansbro Joe wrote: "your one-star rating juxtaposed against my five-star rating. two symbolic bookends with scores of readers at both ends. in the end the lesson can't be clearer; always give a gift certificate to the bookstore..."

I second that, Joe.
And it also shows that one's views are neither right nor wrong.
I adored this picturesque novel and consider it a literary masterpiece; Robin found it exasperating.
Vive la différence! Goodreads would be a boring as a toenail-growing contest if we all agreed about everything! : )

Popping over to check out Joe's review...

Kevin, you gave me an idea! Thanks! The other day I made up a story for the kids I sit for, on the spot. It was about a family who removed their toenails every night. Toenails were stolen and hidden with families out of state. Children without their toenails were forlorn. I’ll have to add a toenail-growing contest!

message 45: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Robin, your reviews slay me! So glad you DNF’d this book with confidence; too many enticing ones calling your name! But I”m fascinated that the whale blubber book didn’t end up as an unread doorstop too!

Toenails, or not toenails? That is the question, Debbie...
: )

Well, I've sorta wanted to give Rushdie another chance after I read (and strongly disliked) his more recent book, The Golden House. I picked this one because it's supposed to be his best. I think it's safe to say we are not meant to be....

Robin Dolors wrote: "So sorry this didn't work for you Robin, I found it quite magic, but as you say, life is too short to insist on books or authors that don't click with us... Merry Christmas!"

Thank you, dear Dolors. I look at my long list of beautiful Goodreads friends, and many of them (including you) adored or at least appreciated this book, and I feel disappointed I couldn't join you, but I tried for a few months to get into this, and it's SO rare that I don't finish a book, even if I didn't really like it... finally I just gave myself permission to bless and release. Or, throw it against the wall. Either or. :D

Oh, and I hope you had a Merry Christmas too! xo
