It’s amazing what one purple line can do for a story. Harold has a purple crayon and he goes on a journey with his imagination. The illustrations are simple and the book is enduring and cute. Everything is black and white ink drawings with that one purple crayon. It’s pretty brilliant what Crockett did here.

The niece didn’t read this and the nephew is in a phase right now. He’s a bit of a handful and he is just out-of-sorts sometimes. He had been throwing tamtrums all evening. I thought he a story might turn the tide and it did not. Anyway, he said this was a stupid story and he hated it. He gave it 1 star and told me not to read this kind of story to him anymore. He was wound up tonight. He didn’t want to go to sleep either. Not every night can be a good one.

I do think he would enjoy this story at another time, so I might try and read it again.

I had never read this classic either. I was expecting a little bit more because of that status, but it's still a great book.

Jenny. Yeah favorites.

Vaishali I'm sorry your nephew didn't like this one, Calista...heartbreaking! However, I think you're right : he might feel differently in the future. I faintly remember Harold as a kid, but when I picked it up recently, I found it so spell-binding & magical, I was completely netted with nostalgia -- I cried and cried and cried, Just loved it <3 Maybe some books we mature into and only appreciate with the passage of time? Or maybe I'm a sap :)

Vaishali, beautifully stated. maybe you are correct and he might grow into this book. That is a great way to have hope for him and the story. I found it charming. Thank you for sharing. It was so well stated.

Liquidlasagna The book that sold more wall cleaners than any other book!''

My question is was the crayon magic?

Liquid - I love the quotes. Very funny. I guess the crayon is up to the reader to decide if its magic or not.

Liquidlasagna oh gee, it's not not magic, and it's 'just' his imagination?
oh damn!

I remember my mom getting disturbed that i bought the book, it was too simple, and you'd get bored with it!

but she was pro Beatrix Potter, and Classic Comics
and sorta skeptical on Dr. Seuss

but she softened on Dr. Seuss in later years!

werent there a few similar books with crayons as well?
I remember one with a flower being drawn with something like a crayon, but i don't think it was purple!

my guess it was a 60s Harold book!

Julian Lee I’m curious if that child is still throwing tantrums

Julian. Five years makes a big difference. He still has his moments, but overall, he is much better. He gets really upset if you tell him to get off a game he is playing and wont let him finish. That's when that temper comes out.
