This is such a wonderful story as two ornery but likeable people fall into their own trap, in all the best ways, of course!
Lady Charlotte Hastings is a “wild child” who has gotten herself in enough troubles to be known as a hellion. She is being targeted, but she must be careful of her reputation at all costs. Much to her surprise, and secret delight, Maximilian, the Duke of Exmoor whom she has loved for years, steps up to help her clear up the mess she is heading for. Lady Charlotte is Maximillian’s best friend’s younger sister, so he takes this as his duty to offer help. He has his own troubles as well with his mother arranging a betrothal for him to a woman he has absolutely no interest in marrying.
When another scandal threatens both Charlie and Max, he offers her a deal. In order to restore her good name and avoid the trap his mother is setting for him with the debutante, they will become engaged – only temporarily – until things quiet down. Unfortunately, neither can stop the passion their both feel for each other and their relationship is becoming quite real! Will they allow themselves to accept a real marriage as a possibility? Or will one or the other bail out of the engagement before the commitment becomes permanent?
