really liked it

4.5, rounded down.

A novel revolving round three audience members' thoughts as they watch a production of Beckett's Happy Days? Yes, please! This just hit my sweet spot, even though there is not much of a plot, per se - which is usually the minimal quality for me to like a book. But Thomas uses her unique précis to really dig deep into these women's past and present ... and I found it riveting. It helps enormously if one has read or seen the play recently, and to catch me up to speed, I watched the terrific 2000 'Beckett on Film' production.

Not a lot more to say, other than my GR fiends Marchpane and Ron Charles have marvelous and detailed discussions of the book in their reviews - so go read those! (I'm getting lazy!)

Marchpane Glad you enjoyed this one Doug!

But what's up with this cover, those faces are creepy? Now that I think about it, why don't any of the covers have Winnie on them? That would have made a great cover!

I know, right? The book deserves so much better, but maybe they'll rectify that for the paperback - glad you weren't mad I told people just to go read YOUR review - it was so erudite that I couldn't possibly have written anything better, and you said exactly what I would have in a more lucid state of mind! ! :-)

Marchpane No worries, I don't mind at all.

Of course, you realise that this means next time you, me, and our mate Ron get together for drinks, you're buying! :)

LOL! You're on! anytime!

Paul Fulcher really enjoyed this plus it encouraged me to watch the play as there happens to be a Trevor Nunn production in London at present.

Doug Terrific.. I looked it up and seems like the Winnie is MUCH younger than she's usually played, which I bet was fascinating. The video I referenced in the review was sadly removed from YouTube, so I deleted the link. Would be nice if this got a Booker nod, but don't think it high-profile enough. :-(

Paul Fulcher The actress is 43 and plays the first half around that sort of age (maybe a little older) but looks/acts much older in the 2nd half.

Doug I've mostly seen it performed by women in their 60's... I also have the Irene Worth version on DVD, but haven't watched it yet.

Beverly I saw Juliet Stevenson play Winnie at the Young Vic in 2015. A brilliant performance that, looking back, now compels me to raise my rating to 5.

Love her - and she's perfect for the part!
