I've learned that when a horror short suggests you'll get the best experience by watching in the dark with headphones, it usually means the screen will be almost completely black and there will be a jumpscare. That was the case here, too. I have to admit, though, the jumpscare in this short was handled far more elegantly than in many other films. Unfortunately, the screen was so dark it was nearly impossible to see anything-definitely a downside. I didn't watch in total darkness, but dark enough that I should have been able to make out more. Still, the story is simple, and its execution is quite well done.
I'm not sure if horror is the right genre for this short film. On the director's social media channel, it was labeled as a thriller-which might be closer to the truth. To be honest, the events in the short are very realistic, and that realism actually heightens the feelings of horror and panic, while also stirring moral questioning, guilt, and self-doubt. Not only could it happen to you, but it certainly has happened to many. I also appreciated the cinematography-it's spot-on for this type of story. A truly pleasant find!
I've watched many laundry-focused horror shorts, and they usually follow a few predictable paths. This one, however, was refreshingly different-something I haven't come across in recent years. I especially enjoyed the vintage Creepshow vibe, thanks largely to the strong audio design and the creature's dialogue. It honestly could have worked perfectly as a storyline for an episode of the '80s Tales from the Crypt-or even its predecessor, The Twilight Zone-with just a longer runtime. Most impressive of all, it kept building momentum and managed to pack a remarkable amount into just three minutes.
