Every successful animation studio had its own humble beginnings, and Pixar knows how far it has come with the success of its latest project, Inside Out 2. But, before all the movies released after the turn of the century, they took pride in their first feature-length animated film, Toy Story, which opened in theaters in 1995.
Toy Story 4 / Pixar Animation Studios
At the time, animation was already pushing the limits in filmmaking. The technology was limited, as compared to what artists have now, but they did get the job done. However, those parameters also affected the full artistic vision of the studio.

Phyllis Smith is a low-key actress. Even after being cast in the famous series The Office, she now lives quietly, with no desire for fame or the media. However, voicing a character in one of Pixar’s films seems to be the complete opposite.
Sadness and Joy in Inside Out 2 (Pixar)
With the great success of Inside Out in 2015 and the long-awaited sequel having premiered in June this year, it was expected that she would have to change her plans and see herself in the spotlight again. As it turns out, she seems to have been quite determined not to give up the “retired” acting career she was pursuing.
Phyllis Smith’s Genius Strategy Still from The Office (NBC)
Despite her resounding success as the character Phyllis Vance in The Office, as well as the critically acclaimed Netflix series The Oa, Phyllis Smith is not such a well-known actress in the industry.

“Inside Out 2” roared into cinema in June, becoming Pixar’s highest-grossing film in a debut weekend of all time, while its current worldwide haul at this time of writing stands at just over one billion.
The first movie — one of the most ingenious films of this century — took audiences inside the head of young Riley as she navigated a move to a new city while her emotions tried to guide her through the move in her head. This second film brings back those emotions as Riley goes through her teenage years. But Joy and Sadness and the gang have to deal with several new emotions in headquarters, including Anxiety, Embarrassment, and Ennui.
But while the film marches towards $1 billion at the box office, could it also be marching towards awards glory? Well, animated flicks don’t get the justice they deserve when it comes to the Academy Awards. So often,...

We're only 9 days away from Inside Out 2 arriving in theaters, and Pixar has released the final trailer for the sequel (via Toonado.com). That puts the spotlight on many of Riley's new emotions, including a fun take on Nostalgia.
Maya Hawke's Anxiety commands much of the screentime here, though, and Joy actress Amy Poehler recently dropped some hints about that character in an interview with Refinery29 Australia.
"Anxiety shows up for a reason," she told the site. "I think we tend to want to push anxiety away - 'Don't worry about it, it's fine!' We want to kind of get it out of our life. But what I think is really cool is they [the filmmakers] let anxiety show up to protect Riley."

Tickets went on sale for Disney and Pixar's Inside Out 2 earlier today, and we're now just one month away from watching the long-awaited sequel to the 2015 hit movie. This follow-up will welcome different Emotions to now-teenager Riley's mind, and a newly released clip shows the returning fan favourites getting acquainted with Anxiety.
Earlier this year, director Kelsey Mann promised Anxiety is going to stir things up within headquarters. "Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, might be new to the crew, but she’s not really the type to take a back seat. That makes a lot of sense if you think about it in terms of what goes on inside all our minds."
Pixar has also shared some new posters for the movie featuring a mix of characters and we'd guess that one final trailer will head our way in the coming weeks.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio topped the 50th Annie Awards for animation, collecting five prizes including best animation feature, direction (del Toro and Mark Gustafson), character animation, music and production design.
“Fuck,” said del Toro as he and Gustafson took the stage to accept the directing award. “I hope to stay with you as peers with this beautiful, beautiful craft we have.” He noted that he’s been directing for 30 years and “the most creative ideas-filled group I worked with is animation.” Del Toro added his hope is that the community pushes the medium for future generations and “change the way we are perceived as a medium, not for us, but for the people coming up.” He got laughs and cheers as he wrapped by exclaiming, “Can I say, I wanted an Annie so much!”

"Turning Red" is Pixar's latest animated feature, and fans of the megastudio's storytelling and animation style are eager for its upcoming release on March 11. The film follows 13-year-old Meilin "Mei" Lee as she deals with the struggles and awkwardness of being a preteen. If the hurdles of being a teenager aren't enough, Mei discovers a new kind of "growing pain" when she wakes up one day as a giant red panda, which manifests when she's excited or distressed - aka, basically all the time.
A huge part of Mei's teenage existence revolves around her favorite boy band, 4*Town. Disney released an original song featuring the fictional boy band on Feb. 25, and since then, fans of the beloved K-pop group BTS have noticed that one of the members of 4*Town, Tae Young, closely resembles BTS member Jimin. We’re not big on saying “told you so,” but we told you not to bet against Pixar at the Oscars, and we were right. The popular computer animation studio, which has received 15 nominations for Best Animated Feature since the inception of the category 19 years ago, took home another Oscar in the category when “Soul” triumphed over the competition during Sunday’s 93rd Academy Awards.
The film, which is Pixar’s first to feature a Black protagonist, was sitting in first place in Gold Derby’s combined odds heading into the ceremony. With 27 Experts predicting it to win, the movie had 3/1 odds of taking home the award and was miles ahead of the rest of the pack, which also included “Onward,” another Pixar film that was released right before the pandemic shut down theaters around the world. Rounding out the rest of the category were “Wolfwalkers,” “Over the Moon” and “Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmaggedon.

If there is one rule to follow when filling out your Oscar predictions it is this: Do not bet against Pixar unless Sony’s “Spider-Man” is also in the running. While the popular computer animation studio doesn’t have a perfect record at the Academy Awards, it is the most decorated studio as the recipient of 10 Best Animated Feature awards. This year, Pixar actually has two films in the running for the first time — “Onward” and “Soul” — with the latter poised to become the company’s 11th animated feature winner out of 15 total nominations.
“Soul,” which is Pixar’s first film to feature a Black protagonist, tells a moving story about a middle school music teacher (voiced by Jamie Foxx) who goes on an enlightening journey to reunite his soul with his body after they become separated just before he’s about to have the biggest break of his jazz career.

Other honorees who spent this compressed Oscar season honing their acceptance speeches for tonight were the four Acting winners — all of whom won as expected. That meant statuettes for Joaquin Phoenix (Leading Actor for Joker), Renee Zellweger (Leading Actress for Judy), Brad Pitt (Supporting Actor for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Laura Dern (Supporting Actress for Marriage Story).
Check out all the winners’ speeches below.

Parasite – Bong Joon Ho
Neon’s film Parasite made Oscar history by becoming the first foreign language film to win Best Picture during the 92nd Academy Awards. Nominated for six Oscars, the film walked away on Sunday night with four Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best International Feature and Best Original Screenplay.
Directed by Bong Joon Ho, Parasite previously won the Palme d’Or at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival as well as top honors at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Cast.
Only 11 international feature films have ever been nominated in the Best Picture category. Bong Joon Ho became the first South Korean to ever win the best director Oscar.
During his acceptance speech he said, “When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, which is “the most personal is the most creative.

“Toy Story 4” has won the Academy Award for best animated feature for Josh Cooley, Mark Nielsen and Jonas Rivera — a decade after “Toy Story 3” took the prize.
It’s the 10th Pixar title to take an Oscar since the category was created in 2001.
“We just want to thank the Academy for honoring our film alongside so many beautiful animated films this year. We’re just proud to be among them,” said Nielsen after accepting the Oscar, “We take great pride in the fact that we get to make family films, and ‘Toy Story 4’ is a love letter to our families.”
“We want to thank the moviegoing audience so much, especially those that grew up with ‘Toy Story.’ We hope that your adventures with Woody and Buzz made growing up a little bit easier,” said Cooley.

Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 4 won the Oscar on Sunday for Best Animated Feature, upsetting the field including Laika’s Missing Link and Netflix’s Klaus that had been taking precursor awards most of the season.
It’s hard to call the victory an upset when it comes to Pixar and its flagship franchise — Toy Story 3 (2010) remains the only sequel to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature (Toy Story and Toy Story 2 hit theaters before the Animated Feature category was created in 2002).
Toy Story 4, directed by Josh Cooley, has made more than $1 billion worldwide, but it had come in to the night as an underdog. It was shut out at the Annie Awards this year — since the category was launched in 2002, 13 of the 19 winners of the Annies’ top feature prize – and now six of the past nine – went on to claim Oscar gold.

It’s Oscar Sunday and that can only mean that our talented and blunt Gold Derby forum posters, many of whom are industry insiders hiding behind cyber handles, are busy giving us their reactions to the 92nd annual Academy Awards. They don’t not mince words when it comes to their thoughts on Hollywood’s biggest night.
The ceremony had many cheering but left just as many infuriated when it came to the night’s winners and losers. What were the upsets that left them absolutely bewildered? Which winners were they cheering for the most? And which defeats struck our users the hardest?
Below, you can take a look at a sampling of the praise and pointed criticism that was leveled at this year’s ceremony. Read more and have your say here.

With “Lamp Life,” the new Pixar short currently streaming on Disney+, we get the backstory of how Bo Peep became a proud and heroic Lost Toy in “Toy Story 4.” Turns out there was plenty of deleted footage to utilize by the short’s director, Valerie Lapointe (“Toy Story 4’s” head of story and co-writer), who flipped it on its head.
“I dug up all of the cut scenes that we had [from the flashback], which were sad, and I was trying to look through the lens of how Bo would look back on her life,” said Lapointe, a story artist on the Oscar-winning “Inside Out” and “Brave.” “Her personality would look back and say that she had a hard life, but she came out the other side as a better person, a better toy, she found a new way of life, and she can laugh at it. Awards are reliable bellwether of best picture Oscar triumph.
1917 boosted its best picture Oscar prospects on Saturday (January 18) after it won the Producers Guild of America’s (PGA) top film award at the 31st annual PGA Awards at Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.

Moments ago, the Producers Guild of America finished up their annual awards show, highlighted by the Darryl F. Zanuck Award, their version of Best Picture. The PGA top prize is a reliable indicator of future Oscar success, since eight of the last ten winners here have gone on to take the Academy Award as well. Are we in line to see that happen again? Considering that the Producers Guild opted to reward Sam Mendes’ 1917, and the fact that that film is currently surging, we very well might be seeing just that. Read on for more, as well as the rest of the winners… PGA not only went for 1917 in their top category, but they rebuffed the Academy with their Documentary prize, going with Apollo 11, despite it not being nominated in Best Documentary Feature. In the Animated field, they picked Toy Story 4, arguably keeping it the slight Oscar favorite in Best Animated Feature.

Updated with full list of winners: The Producers Guild unveiled the year’s best in film and TV producing Saturday at the 31st annual PGA Awards at the Hollywood Palladium, with Universal’s 1917 taking the top film prize. “1917” has won the Producers Guild of America’s award as the best-produced feature film of 2019, giving it an important victory at an awards show that usually honors the film that goes on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
The film, an immersive drama about World War I that was fashioned to look like a single shot, triumphed in a field that also included top Academy Award contenders “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” “The Irishman,” “Parasite” and “Joker.” While the PGA win makes it a de facto frontrunner of sorts in that race, this is a year in which the Oscar race still feels unsettled.
“Apollo 11” won the award for documentary feature, while “Toy Story 4” won for animated feature.

Sam Mendes’ World War I drama “1917” got a boost in its bid to win the Best Picture Oscar when it took home the top prize at the 31st annual Producers Guild Awards Saturday night. The winner of the PGA Awards’ top prize, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, has historically been a strong indicator of which film will go on to win the Best Picture Oscar. Since 1989, the PGA winner has matched up with the top Oscar 21 out of 30 times.
Last year, Peter Farrelly’s controversial racial drama “Green Book” took the top PGA trophy before going on to win the Best Picture Oscar. This year “1917” bested the other eight films competing for the top Oscar at the PGAs, as well as a tenth film, Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” — which settled for an Original Screenplay Oscar slot.

The last two Producers Guild of America Awards told us which movies — “Green Book” (2019) and “The Shape of Water” (2018) — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact, 21 of the previous PGA Awards winners have then gone on to claim Best Picture victories.
For the 31st annual ceremony slated for Saturday, January 18 at the Hollywood Palladium, we already know the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. The PGA’s 10 nominated films are “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Knives Out,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite.” All but “Knives Out” contend at the Oscars for Best Picture.

Mere moments ago, the Producers Guild of America announced the nominations for their annual PGA Awards. This is one of the most reliable predictors for the Academy Award category of Best Picture, so pay attention! The ten movies cited in their top category (known as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures) are almost always Oscar finalists in Picture. This seems likely to hold true again this year. Read on for more… You can see all of the Producers Guild citations below, but the ten films honored in the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures category are 1917, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Knives Out, Little Women, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Parasite. The Best Picture nominees that the Academy cites will likely come from this bunch, though not all will make it, obviously.

The Producers Guild of America has revealed its nominees in the motion picture and television categories for its 31st Annual Producers Guild Awards; nominees include recent Golden Globe winners “1917,” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” “Missing Link,” “Succession,” “Fleabag” and “Chernobyl.”
The PGA, which has about 8,200 members, has matched the Oscar for best picture in 21 of its 30 years, including “The Green Book” last year and “The Shape of Water” in 2018.
The PGA uses a preferential balloting system that’s similar to that employed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The PGA and AMPAS both expanded their voting for the top film to 10 nominees in 2009. About three-quarters of the PGA’s Zanuck nominees wind up as Oscar best picture nominees.
On the TV side, among all of the drama and comedy nominees, only “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (last year’s comedy winner) is a repeat from last year.
This seems to be the year for sweet but sorrowful endings in animation. Two of the medium’s most popular franchises — “How to Train Your Dragon” and “Toy Story” — wrapped up their stories by making sure audiences got what they needed even if they weren’t quite ready to say goodbye.

“I saw the opportunity to do something akin to those initial three ‘Star Wars’ films that I grew up with. You can tell a story that expands the world and deepens the characters and continues the adventure, but in a way that it doesn’t feel like a miscellaneous next adventure with the same five or six characters, which is often the case with sequels,...

The “Toy Story” universe has always been very male, ever since John Lasseter’s first “Pixar” release in 1995 introduced old-school Western sheriff pull-toy Woody (Tom Hanks) and snazzy electronic flyer Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen). The dynamic duo have stayed front and center through sequels “Toy Story 2” and “3.”
Pixar itself has been going through a sea change. Of the 21 films Pixar has released since 1995, just four have focused on a female lead. Over the years, Pixar has gradually increased the participation of women throughout the Bay Area company, from animators and designers to story artists.
The first woman to enter the Brain Trust was Pixar Senior Development Executive Mary Coleman. Later, Rita Hsaio shared screenplay credit on “Toy Story 2,” Meg LeFauve landed screenplay credits for “Inside Out” and “The Good Dinosaur,” and Victoria Strouse co-wrote “Finding Dory” with director Andrew Stanton.
