Where Are They Now: 5 Famous Prosthetic Genitals
Image
Historically, gender nudity inequality ran rampant in Hollywood, as most leading men were, perhaps understandably, reluctant to hang brain on screen. Thanks to advances in prosthetic technology, however, we can splash as many wangs as we want across the silver screen, safe in the knowledge that, like everything else on it, they’re only pretend. That’s right: It’s a new dong dawn.

But what happens to those fabled phalluses once they’ve served their purpose?

5 Nosferatu

In one scene of 2024’s Nosferatu reboot, Nicholas Hoult gets a little too intimate with Bill Skarsgard’s title bloodsucker, later revealing to director Robert Eggers, “I could feel his prosthetic penis on my leg.” As a reminder of their special time together, Eggers framed the vampenis and sent it to Hoult after filming wrapped. In fact, it arrived broken, but a gift is a gift, so Hoult had to take the...

How Lily James’ Figure Physically Resembled Pamela Anderson For Pam & Tommy
Image
Lily James’ Pamela transformation leaves onlookers shocked (Photo Credit – Facebook)

Actress Lily James once stunned audiences with her transformation into Canadian model Pamela Anderson for Hulu’s 2022 miniseries Pam & Tommy. The show, based on the infamous 2014 Rolling Stone article Pam and Tommy: The Untold Story of the World’s Most Infamous Sex Tape, not only reignited public interest in the scandalous history between Anderson and musician Tommy Lee but also led to intense curiosity about its leading actress.

When early photos of James transformed into the Baywatch bombshell at a California beach surfaced, they left the internet with one small question crawling in the back of their brains to ponder. “Are Lily James’ breasts real in Pam & Tommy?” spearheaded search engine inputs — and deservingly so. With Anderson’s famously voluptuous figure, which attracts many with her breasts measurements — 34D, and later enhanced to 34Dd — it was inevitable for viewers to wonder how James,...

‘The Substance,’ ‘The Deliverance’ and ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Lead Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Nominations
Image
Coralie’s Fargeat’s “The Substance,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “The Deliverance” led the 12th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Award nominations.

The body horror of Fargeat’s “The Substance” resonated with the make-up and hair stylist guild with three nominations. Special effects artist Pierre Olivier Persin explained that Fargeat wanted to use practical effects, instead of digital CGI, where possible. 70-80% of what was seen in the film was practical, including the MonstroElisaSue creation which features at the end.

“Gladiator 2” and “Deadpool and Wolverine” each landed two nominations a piece. Other films that scored include “Shirley,” “Bob Marley: One Love” and “The Last Showgirl.”

Missing from the nominations were nods for “Maria,” “Nosferatu” and “Dune: Part II.”

In the television category, “Dancing With the Stars” landed five nominations across the hair and make-up categories.

Lady Gaga’s “Chromatica Ball Film” was also nominated, landing her personal makeup artist,...

Charlize Theron is often front-row at tennis matches and fashion shows — but on Tuesday, she was on the court, playing doubles with No. 1 men’s player Novak Djokovic.

The Oscar winner hosted the 20th annual Desert Smash celebrity tennis tournament to support her charity, the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project. The organization funds community-based, locally led groups that work directly with young people in preventing gender-based violence, advocating for sexual reproductive health and rights, and providing access to higher education. For the final match, the Serbian tennis superstar made a surprise appearance, interrupting Theron’s game with Atp champion Frances Tiafoe, comedian Yvonne Orji and two-time Grand Slam winner Victoria Azarenka.

‘Maestro,’ ‘Saltburn’ and ‘Barbie’ Win Make-Up and Hair Styling Awards
Richard E. Grant, Rosamund Pike, Richie Cotterell, Alison Oliver, Barry Keoghan, Archie Madekwe, and Jacob Elordi in Saltburn (2023)
“Maestro,” “Saltburn” and “Barbie” have won the feature-film awards from the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild, which gave out its annual awards on Sunday evening in Los Angeles.

“Maestro” won awards the two Muahs categories that most closely correspond to the Oscars’ Best Makeup and Hairstyling category: Best Special Make-Up Effects and Best Period and/or Character Make-Up.

“Saltburn” won for Best Contemporary Make-Up and Best Contemporary Hair Styling, while “Barbie” took the award for Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling.

The wins were significant for “Maestro,” which has seen its status as a frontrunner for the Oscar makeup award falter as it lost at BAFTA and the Critics Choice Awards to “Poor Things” and “Barbie,” respectively.

In the first 15 years of the Muahs awards, which ran between 1999 and 2003 and then returned in 2013, the winner for period make-up went on to win the Oscar eight times, while...

Where Was Snitch Filmed? The Thriller's Filming Locations Explained
Image
The filming of Snitch took place in the southern United States, where the diverse locations were used effectively to enhance the storytelling. The cast includes Dwayne Johnson, Rafi Gavron, Barry Pepper, Benjamin Bratt, Harold Perrineau, Susan Sarandon, and Jon Bernthal. Filming primarily occurred in the Shreveport-Bossier City Metropolitan Area of Louisiana, with a few scenes shot in Texas. The budget constraints seemingly influenced the choice of locations.

The entirety of filming for Snitch took place in the southern United States, where the cast and crew took advantage of the versatility of the region's locations to tell the story. The 2013 action thriller movie starred Dwayne Johnson as John Matthews, a construction company owner whose estranged son, Jason Collins, played by Rafi Gavron, got in trouble with the Drug Enforcement Agency when he was framed by his friend. ‘Elvis’ dominates Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on the way to Oscars
Image
“Elvis” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 11 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and hairstyling but lost the special effects race to one of its Oscar rivals, “The Whale.” Another Oscar contender, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” won contemporary makeup.

These wins boost the odds of one of these three films prevailing at the Academy Awards. Last year marked the only time in the nine-year history of these guild honors that one of its winners had not gone on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. While “Coming 2 America” won three awards here, it was “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” that won over academy voters. That biopic had lost both period/character guild awards (hairstyling to “Being the Ricardos” and makeup to Oscar rival “Cruella”) plus the special effects category to “Coming 2 America.

‘Elvis’ Collects Pair of Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards
Image
Elvis topped the feature competition at the 10th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards (IATSE Local 706), winning a pair of awards for period make-up and period hair styling.

Accepting with the team, Shane Thomas said of the team’s challenge to creating Elvis Presley, “We wanted to represent and respect, but not impersonate.” He also saluted director Baz Luhrmann’s “unwavering commitment” to filmmaking.

Also on Saturday at The Beverly Hilton, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever collected the award for contemporary hair styling. Department head Camille Friend dedicated the award to the late Chadwick Boseman.

Angela Bassett – who is Oscar-nominated for her role as Queen Ramonda in Wakanda Forever – received the Guild’s Distinguished Artisan Award during the ceremony. Bassett called the Guild members the “unsung heroes of filmmaking” as she accepted the award. “For any show, there is a team who works long and hard to help us bring to life the character.

Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards preview: Which Oscar nominees will win here first?
Image
Two of the five Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling — “The Batman” and “Elvis” — contend in three categories apiece at the guild awards on Feb. 11. Another contender, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” has a pair of bids while “The Whale” has a single nomination. The fifth Oscar contender, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” was snubbed by the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards.

Last year marked the first time in the nine-year history of these guild awards that the eventual Oscar winner was shut out here first. “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” lost both period/character races (hairstyling to “Being the Ricardos” and makeup to Oscar rival “Cruella”) plus the special effects category to another Oscar contender, “Coming 2 America.” The other two Oscar nominees — “House of Gucci” and “Dune” — were also overlooked by the guild despite three and two bids respectively.

‘Westworld’ Team on Designing Season 4’s New Drones and Building an Army of Aaron Pauls
Image
Click here to read the full article.

[This story contains spoilers for HBO’s Westworld season 4.]

When HBO’s Westworld revealed its massive mid-season twist — that Aaron Paul’s Caleb had become a host — it inched this cerebral series closer to answering its longest-running question: what makes something human?

It’s a quandary the series’ special makeup effects team has had to not only help Westworld visually explore throughout the show’s run but in the face of several of its leading heroes and villains becoming hosts, alongside the introduction of a new series of drones imagined by Hale during its fourth season.

Executing that thematic exploration with Caleb took place during the season’s sixth episode, “Fidelity,” where host version #278 attempts to break out of Hale’s glass cage after she seeks to isolate what has made Caleb’s human consciousness resistant to her mind-control tech. In the process, Caleb runs into a series of frightening discoveries: past versions of him,...

How The Don't Worry Darling Team Transformed Harry Styles For That Third Act Reveal
Image
Note: This article contains spoilers for "Don't Worry Darling" so proceed with caution.

The big reveal of "Don't Worry Darling" wouldn't be the same without the hair and makeup team behind the moment. If you've seen the film already, you know that the Jack we meet at the beginning of the film — played by former One Direction member Harry Styles — is not quite the same guy we come to know by the time the third act starts to roll.

The internet can't stop talking about Styles' transformation from a Frank Sinatra-style leader of his own Rat Pack to a grimy incel with ulterior motives, but it wouldn't hit as hard if it weren't for hair department head Jaime Leigh McIntosh and makeup head Heba Thorisdottir, who spent two hours working on the look.

According to McIntosh, the finished product, and how effective it would be onscreen, "was about finding...

How ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ Gave Harry Styles a Shocking Makeover in Key Scenes
Image
Spoiler Alert: Do not read unless you have seen “Don’t Worry Darling,” in theaters now.

Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling” is set in the blissful utopia of the Victory Project in the 1950s. Alice (Florence Pugh) and Jack (Harry Styles) are residents in the insular desert town, where husbands routinely drive off to work, wives wave goodbye, take ballet lessons and prepare dinner. It’s a “Stepford Wives” scenario.

But all is not right, as the women must stay away from their husbands’ office building, Victory HQ, and aren’t allowed to know what they do for work. Soon enough, Alice starts to suspect that even bigger secrets lie underneath the surface of their idealistic life. After a neighbor disappears, she digs deeper.

In the film’s second-act twist, viewers learn that the Victory Project is a present-day VR world where men can control women and turn them into “perfect wives.

‘Pam & Tommy’ Authentically Recreated ’90s Looks No One Ever Forgot
Image
Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Hulu, for this edition we look at how costume designer Kameron Lennox, hair department head Barry Lee Moe, makeup department head David Williams and special makeup effects designer Jason Collins brought the ’90s back to life for “Pam & Tommy.”

Hulu’s limited series “Pam & Tommy” chronicles the marriage of two of the most iconic and ubiquitous celebrities of the ’90s, “Baywatch” star Pamela Anderson and Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee. The show is both an intimate character study and a sweeping portrait of an era, which created both inspiring opportunities and daunting challenges for the filmmakers tasked with comparing and contrasting the public and private lives of Pam, Tommy, and the members of their circle during the most dramatic period in their relationship.

‘Minx’s’ Makeup Artist Details the Prosthetic Penises Actors Had to Wear for 10 Hours a Day
Image
Makeup department head Carleigh Herbert has always been obsessed with period pieces, and the ’70s have always been a favorite.“There was so much self-expression,” she says. So, when the chance to work on HBO Max’s “Minx” came along, she snapped it up.

One particular scene, halfway through the show’s first episode, posed a unique challenge for Herbert. Ophelia Lovibond’s Joyce is tasked with casting models for Minx, the first porn magazine designed for women. What follows is a parade of male models baring and strutting their stuff for the casting call.

Herbert, whose credits include “The Sex Life of College Girls,” “Ratched” and “American Horror Story,” says both director Rachel Lee Goldenberg and the show’s creator and writer Ellen Rapoport were excited to have her on board with her prosthetics background.

‘Minx’ makeup department head Carleigh Herbert on researching the early 1970s and using the ‘Pam & Tommy’ prosthetic penis [Exclusive Video Interview]

Throughout her career, makeup artist Carleigh Herbert has worked on a large variety of different TV series, including MTV’s “Teen Wolf” and FX’s “American Horror Story” — which has earned her four Emmy nominations to date — but nothing is quite as special as actually being part of one from the get-go. “It’s honestly a dream come true,” she tells Gold Derby in a new webchat about serving as the makeup department head on the first season of HBO Max’s new period comedy series “Minx.” “And [it’s] a period piece — there’s nothing more challenging than that. So, the challenge of it all and then designing [it] from the start has been a really wild, fun experience. It’s like it becomes your baby.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Prosthetics, 3D Scans and Sculpting Helped Jared Leto, Lily James and More Transform This Emmys Season
Image
Hair and makeup artists are at it again, transforming actors into real-life characters. From the sublime to complete, Jared Leto, Jessica Biel, Lily James, Sebastian Stan and Renée Zellweger were among those being trans- formed and techniques including 3D scans of the artist are de rigueur now.

Suits, enhancements and a lot of prosthetics went into helping actors disappear into their parts.

Leto is no stranger to the art of transformation. Last year, he vanished under layers of prosthetics to play Paolo Gucci in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci.” For “WeCrashed” on Apple TV+, Leto worked with Kazu Hiro, who helped him become WeWorked founder Adam Neumann.

Hiro, who has won Oscars for his makeup and hairstyling turn- ing Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill for “Darkest Hour” and again for Charlize Theron into Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly for “Bombshell,” it’s all about sculpting techniques. His challenge...

From Beachy Hair to Tattoos, How the ‘Pam & Tommy’ Hair and Makeup Team Nailed the Stars’ Iconic Looks
Image
Though “Pam & Tommy” may take some creative license in telling its story, the recreation of Tommy Lee (Sebastian Stan) and Pamela Anderson (Lily James) at the height of their fame/infamy is unimpeachable. More than any of the needle drops or the script’s wide-eyed wonderment at VHS and the internet, it is the work of the hair and makeup teams that bring the entire era to life. IndieWire spoke to hair department head Barry Lee Moe, makeup department head David Williams, and makeup special effects designer Jason Collins about tackling that challenge.

“I got [Tommy’s] piercings from Body Electric on Melrose, and I simply took in a photo of Tommy Lee’s chest,” Williams said. “And the man who owns the shop asked, ‘Are you working with Tommy Lee?’ And I said, ‘Well, not exactly, but why do you ask if that’s Tommy Lee?’ [And he said] ‘I know those tattoos!’ It...

Sexuality in football is currently under the microscope. Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib this month became the first active NFL player to come out as gay, and while historic, it was also a moment of reflection for Ryan Russell.

It was a different experience for Russell, however, who in August 2019 announced that he is bisexual, and...

Gus Kenworthy Ready for Out, Proud 2018 Olympics: ‘I Am So Excited to Go to the Games as Myself’ (Exclusive)
Gus Kenworthy
With fewer than 100 days until the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, U.S. freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy has become one of the most prominent faces of the Games. And it should come as no surprise that the athlete has seen his profile rise in the four years since he took home a silver medal at the 2014 Sochi Games, where he also became famous for rescuing four pups and their mother (aka the Sochi Strays) and earned the nickname “Gus Swoon-worthy.”

But most notably, a few months after returning home from Russia, Kenworthy publicly came out as gay, in an October 2015 interview with Espn the Magazine. He quickly became recognized and celebrated as one of only a few out American male athletes, joining the ranks of soccer player Robbie Rogers, NBA pro Jason Collins, and NFL newbie Michael Sam, who all came out just a couple of years prior.

What followed was a surge of support from sports...
