Young American Abby Stevens is searching for her fiancé Doug. She hopes to find him visiting Alan Smerdon at an artists' commune in the English countryside. Alan is not only Doug's close school friend, but a distant cousin to Abby. However, Alan and the other artists claim Doug has never been to their village. Nevertheless, Abby shares a psychic bond with Doug, and is certain the visions she is receiving are connected to the commune and that Doug may be in danger.

An ad appears in a London paper, looking for a woman with a sense of adventure and no ties. A young woman lands the job, says goodbye to her two roommates, and never contacts them again. Six weeks later, one of the other roommates finds the same ad in the paper and applies. She is hired immediately, and despite her close friendship with her roommate, never writes or calls. Four months later, the last roommate sees the ad in the paper again, and determines to get to the bottom of the mystery.
