The last time I turned over the floor for suggestions on what to make from the 186-piece Building Better Thinking box, a ton of you yelled "Dragon!" while another sizable number cheered for a spaceship (partly my fault for accidentally putting it in peoples' minds). I did the dragon pretty promptly, and rather than going through another round of comment-gathering, this time I just went with the previous runner-up. What astonishes me is that all three build videos thus far have been within 1 minute of each others' length, a completely unplanned happenstance.

LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Drone Explorer review 31071
The word "drone" entered the popular lexicon via early media hype over the rise of military recon & attack UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) around the turn of the millennium. Originally the term was a reference to the sound and "dumb" flight characteristics of UAVs, which resembled that of male bees. A decade later, media again mucked with the English language by applying the term to any and all multi-rotor remote-controlled aircraft, including cheap toy versions, regardless of capabilities. Many ignorant news reports would even call single-rotor RC helicopters & airplanes "drones" and use quadcopter visual references because that's what they had gotten the public temporarily worked up about (with worries over privacy & safety). Now LEGO has picked up this linguistic misappropriation and applied it to a model of a flying vehicle that's clearly supposed to be operated by an onboard pilot. In other words, it's just an aircraft. To be more specific you could call it a twin-rotor helicopter or bicopter, but it's not a "drone" by any stretch.
That concludes today's unsolicited lesson. For weekend homework, write a 500-word essay on the the legal and ethical precedents for government regulation of remotely-piloted model aircraft for commercial vs. recreational use. Pass/fail grading will be used.

LEGO October 2017 VIP exclusive promotional polybag review! 40178
As seen in a recent haul video, I had to get two of these for the wonderful sticker sheets and also the much improved new LEGO store employee minifigure. The rest is nice for display when just (mostly) built as designed, too.

LEGO Architecture Arc de Triomphe review 21036
Some of the use of gray in this model is probably debatable, but I think it's a very worthy representation of the source material. It's shockingly small, though, especially for the price.

LEGO Creator London Bus speed build & review videos 10258
Here's the latest large-scale vehicle from the Creator line in all of its bright red glory. Though it has nearly 1,700 pieces, its scale proportional to the source material is much smaller than most (if not all?) of its modern "advanced model" peers.

LEGO Creator Modular house Super-Build - 31067 + 31068 + 31069 combination
Here it is, the ultimate test of this modular thing. In this video I show, from good angles & bad, the two official super-combinations of the main builds of the Modular Poolside Holiday, Modular Modern Home, and Modular Family Villa. With this many assemblies to swap around, quickly coming up with new structures is actually a lot of fun. It's like building with LEGO, but using pieces that are each made of a bunch of LEGO pieces. LEGO-ception. Expensive, though!
As I bought three of each set, I hope to make 2 or 3 fully-enclosed semi-custom houses to add to the residential neighborhood in New Jang City, using only the official modules.
LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Modular Poolside Holiday review! 31067
Just as my faith in this little "modular" experiment was fading to black, this little thing came along and restored my faith. Here, the system works, by virtue of a foundation of good basic design of the structure first, to which the extra element of interchangeability is then added.

This second largest example of the summer modular house-building system is definitely my least favorite. The shaping of the main build makes sense, but the colors & textures are really mixed up, and the modules individually have somewhat limited usefulness for customization.

Vintage LEGO Rocket Base 358 from 1973 reviewed
Happy Flashback Friday or belated Throwback Thursday :) One insignificant piece in this set is a bit too new and a few are a bit too old (all direct & close substitutions), but overall it's a pretty faithfully preserved piece of history from before the dawn of the minifig era.

Custom LEGO near-future cabover semi truck MOC
A brief mental image of a little bit of the front of a non-existant vehicle has turned into something complete! This MOC allows me to kick a non-custom semi out of New Jang City and establishes both an era for the city and a specific vehicle manufacturer brand that I can potentially use again in the future. Win-win-win!

LEGO Creator Mini Volkswagen Beetle review - 40252
It's a mini-me version of 10252, surprisingly offered up as a promotional freebie almost a year after the release of the full-sizer. It has its issues and has received a lot of criticism, but did I mention that it's a freebie?
