Duolingo is the world's most popular way to learn a language.

About us

Our mission is to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available. Duolingo is the most downloaded education app in the history of the App Store and in 2019 became the top-grossing education app worldwide. We set out to do something altogether different in the learning space. Learning a new language is hard; we believe it should be fun. We use bite-sized lessons that feel like playing a game to keep our learners motivated. Learning a new language can also be expensive, and because we believe it should be free, we made it so. Duolingo has been named to: BuiltIn's Best Places to Work (2023), Fast Company Best Workplaces for Innovators (2022), Fast Company 10 Most Innovative Education Company (2022), among others.

There’s nothing Duo wouldn’t do to make you do your lessons, including inviting influencers and Duolingo employees to roast him for your entertainment and revenge. 🔥 🔥 🔥 One of our very own Animators, Derek Gieraltowski, took part in this Roast with the segment, “Things Duo Has Paid Me Money to Draw.” The idea he had was “to expose Duo for all of the embarrassing and self-indulgent things he’s made me draw for him, so I just tried to think of things that he wouldn’t want anyone to see.” 🤌🏼 It is never a dull moment in the Design department at Duolingo! Derek gave us a peek into how they push the brand and don’t let things get stale. 👀 “I think a big chunk of Duolingo fostering creativity comes from having leadership that facilitates a culture that values this. I 100% feel encouraged to bring in my own inspirations to my work, and as an art team we’re always sharing our inspirations with each other and inspiring each other with the things we create. Duolingo is a very enriching place to work, and I think that’s intentional. Especially with projects like @inhouse.duolingo on Instagram, I don’t think there’s a lot of places that dedicate time for their artists to do experimental stuff. Doing the non-branded or less-branded work together, in my opinion, really helps us push the core brand. For example, we made a short to celebrate me adopting a dog, which was 100% non-branded, and then there were things like the exquisite corpse, which was an animation of Duo but in a bunch of different crazy styles. Neither of those projects were made for the purpose of going in the Duolingo app, but they were experiments in pushing our style and fostering collaboration between our artists. It’s about bringing ourselves to the brand and adding to it, which, similarly, is how I approached my part in the Roast! We are always thinking about how we can push the brand. Without that, I think we’d get stale!” You’re welcome for this piece of art. 👨🎨 #duolingo #onlyatduolingo #design

Who’s going to Droidcon this week in NYC?! 🙋♂️ We are excited to have a handful of Duos (employees) joining this event where Android developers will learn about exciting new features and best practices in app development, UI/UX design, and performance optimization. 🧠 We have two Duos, Judy Lin and John Rodriguez, speaking at the event. Here is more information about their talks: ✅ Cross-platform Animations with Rive: Learn how Duolingo builds cross platform animated features with Rive. We’ll introduce Rive and how to use it, including Compose interaction! ✅ Writing Your Own Gradle Plugin: A Deep Drive: We’ll talk about Configurations and why they are important, the lifecycle of a Gradle build and how to architect your plugin around it, and what we can learn from a few popular plugins. ✅ A Snapshot Preview of Paparazzi 2.0: Since last Droidcon NYC, Paparazzi has seen continued increased adoption across the Android community! We’ll discuss why pixel perfection is challenging, image encoding and why we chose APNG for animations, and why Google’s publishing of layoutlib is great for the community. 🤝 Also, Brittany Mezhir, from our Recruiting team, will be around to connect, and she might even have some exclusive Android Duo stickers for you. 🤩 Comment below if you’ll be there! 👇 #duolingo #droidcon #engineering #androidengineer

Our VP of Product, Cem Kansu, breaks down what we deem as "the bar" for developing features that we ship to our learners. 👇 By holding ourselves to high standards across these 4 key areas, we ensure that everything learners see is as delightful and useful as it can possibly be: 🎯 It’s easy and intuitive to use, for all learners, of all ages and all locations. We ask ourselves: would someone that installed their first mobile app and lives in India understand how to use this feature? 😁 It has a minimum viable amount of fun and delight. We are in the business of making learning fun, so our features always have to deliver fun and delight. This is subjective, and something we usually decide on a case-by-case basis. For example: a feature doesn't need to have polished animations to meet the bar, but it also shouldn’t have long instructional text tutorials. 📱 Every pixel on the screen is carefully thought about. Consumer products live and die in the pixels. You’d never see a screen with a "back" button and a "X" button that do the same thing. ✅ It's consistent with the rest of the app. For example: challenges inside our lessons always fit in a single view and shouldn't scroll. And if you hit all 4, you’ve reached the bar! 👏 Sound like a team you want to be a part of? Find all of our Product roles here: https://lnkd.in/eezZ_XmZ #duolingo #productmanagement

Manager, Executive Support @ Duolingo | Global Pride Lead, DEI Council

I originally downloaded Duolingo to learn Italian, to prepare for our birthday vacation last year. I always thought Italian was a beautiful language and I really wanted to connect with locals in their language 🇮🇹 Soon after starting to play with the app and learn, I saw a job posting, which was very timely since my then job was getting ready for layoffs. It was not only timely but a role that was a perfect match for me, and allowed me to get back into people management, which I truly love. I interviewed all the way up to our trip, and the more people I met, the more I learned about the Company and mission, the more I was certain that it was where I was meant to be. After only learning Italian for about 2 months, I was pleasantly surprised to realize how much I actually understood. It really came in handy with taxi drivers especially. But I realized that even though I couldn’t understand every word, I was able to piece things together and figure out what they were saying. It was amazing. Then, we got engaged on my birthday in Florence during the sunset at the Arno River 🥹 It was surreal and magical 🥰 just a couple days later, I was extended an offer to join Duolingo. It felt very full circle to get this job, in the country of the language I downloaded to learn Italian in the first place 🤯 especially right after something so meaningful and special like getting engaged 💕 Now here I am, celebrating my one year Duolingo streak 🥳 with my one year Duoversary approaching in about 2 months 💚 l'italiano è bellissimo e non vedo l'ora di sposare mia moglie! Grazie mille, Duolingo!

The past few weeks have been emotional for some of our Duolingo parents as they prepare their nestling kiddos for back to school. It can be easy to forget if you're in parent-mode or work-mode. Anyone else? 🙋♀️ Parents, we see you, we support you, and we think you're doing a great job. 💚 #duolingo

"It turns out that people don’t want a gimmick; they want a place that truly supports their well-being at work.” Fast Company visited our new NYC office at 4 World Trade Center, and here’s what they think: https://lnkd.in/eems6C9k In designing the space for our 200+ NYC Duos (employees), we prioritized meeting the #neurodiverse needs of our Duos’ different working styles, while highlighting our company’s unique culture and personality. 🦉 “It’s about giving as much optionality to folks as possible,” says Sean Devlin, our VP of Workplace and Real Estate, about the array of spaces available. “We want to allow them to do the best work of their lives. What do you need on a certain day to be effective? It’s different on different days.” Thank you to our Workplace team, Design Studio, and Rapt Studio for this incredible team effort. 💪 We hope you join us for a latte at the Green Bean coffee bar next time you’re in our new neighborhood! ☕ #duolingo #onlyatduolingo
