Jeans de Fillet[1] are enemies in the Yoshi series. They are skeletal Cheep Cheeps (albeit slightly larger than them) that appear in both water and lava. Jeans de Fillet jump out of the lava or water in arches, knocking a Yoshi away if they touch it. Yoshi cannot eat them, but they can be defeated with an egg or another object thrown at them.
They are one of three enemies that are skeletal versions of Cheep Cheeps, and were the last of the three to be introduced overall. The other two are Fish Bones (debuting in Super Mario World) and Honebons (debuting in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins).
History[edit]
Yoshi series[edit]
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]
Jeans de Fillet first appear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and reappear in its Game Boy Advance version Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 as uncommon enemies. They appear only in two levels: The Impossible? Maze and Tap-Tap The Red Nose's Fort. In Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, they additionally appear in the Endless World of Yoshis stage. They appear jumping to the left and right in small arcs out of the lava or water in certain areas. They can be defeated with an egg, or an Anywhere POW, Super Blue Watermelon, and Super Green Watermelon, after they drop coins or stars.
Yoshi's New Island[edit]
Jeans de Fillet return in Yoshi's New Island, where they appear in only one level dedicated to them, Furious Fred de Fillet's Castle. Here, they act as the main obstacle, appearing from the lava alone or in groups. Unlike in the previous game, before jumping, they stick their heads out of the water or lava for a moment before jumping forward in a large arc. While jumping, they flap their fins. The boss of the level, Furious Fred de Fillet, starts as a normal Jean de Fillet, but after Kamek uses his magic on him, he grows big and gains submarine-like armor around his body. To defeat the boss, Yoshi must first get rid of his armor and then launch an egg at him, which is similar to how normal Jean de Fillets are defeated.
Super Mario (Kodansha manga)[edit]
A Jean de Fillet makes a cameo appearance in the thirty-third volume of Kodansha's Super Mario manga, Super Mario: Yoshi Island 1, where it appears in the character list alongside other enemies and characters from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
Additionally, in chapter 4 of Super Mario: Yoshi Island 2, after an acid drop falls onto a Cheep Cheep inside Froggy's throat, its skin falls off and it turns into a Jean de Fillet, causing everyone to panic and try to climb out.
Profiles[edit]
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]
- Shogakukan guide: 同じところを行ったり来たりしながら飛びはねる。タマゴで倒せる。[2] (It jumps back and forth in the same place. It can be defeated with an egg.)
- Player's Guide: Jean adapted himself to a life in lava lakes by going on a serious diet.[1]
- Shogakukan guide (Game Boy Advance version): 同じ所を行き来しながら飛びはねる。タマゴを当てて倒そう。[3] (It jumps back and forth in the same place. Hit it with an egg and defeat it.)
Yoshi's New Island[edit]
- Shogakukan guide: ホネだけになったプクプク。溶岩から山なりの軌道で飛び出してくる。タマゴを当てると倒せるが、避けて進むほうが楽。プクプク(あか)と異なり、食べられない。[4] (A Cheep Cheep that is now only a skeleton. They pop out from the lava in a hill-like trajectory. You can defeat them by hitting them with an egg, but it is easier to avoid them. Unlike Cheep Cheep (red), they cannot be eaten.)

Naming[edit]
Jeans de Fillet's name comes from "fillet", a boneless cut of meat (usually fish). Their English name possibly references the 1986 French period drama Jean de Florette.
