DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
WARNING: Accidental air bag deployment is possible. Personal injury may result. Read and follow
all WARNINGS and AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS before working on air bag
system or related components.
The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), also known as air bag system, is designed to provide increased
accident protection for driver and passenger by deploying air bags and front seat belt pretensioners in a frontend
collision. The air bags, stored in center of steering wheel and in instrument panel above glove box, deploy in
about 40 milliseconds after impact sensors close. Air bag system is designed to be used with 3-point seat belts.
During a front-end collision, the air bag Restraints Control Module (RCM) discriminates between an event that
warrants air bag deployment and an event that does not. In a crash of sufficient force, the RCM signals the air
bag modules and front seat belt pretensioners to simultaneously deploy.
Air bag system includes following components: Restraints Control Module (RCM), safing sensor (located
inside the RCM), a back-up power supply (also located inside the RCM), driver-side air bag module,
passengerside air bag module, right and left front seat belt buckle pretensioners, Passenger-Side Air Bag
Deactivation (PAD) switch, AIR BAG warning light, clockspring and associated wiring harnesses. See

BACK-UP POWER SUPPLY
A back-up power supply is located inside Restraints Control Module (RCM). If battery or battery cables are
damaged in a collision before sensor circuits close, back-up power supply will provide electrical power to
deploy air bags. Back-up power supply will hold a deployment charge for approximately one minute after
negative battery cable is disconnected.
CLOCKSPRING
The clockspring is a contact and wire assembly used to transfer electrical signals from steering column wiring
harness to driver-side air bag module.
DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE
When sensors close, signaling an impact, ignitor triggers inflator. During ignition, sodium azide reacts with
copper oxide, producing nitrogen gas, which inflates air bag.
When air bag deploys, tear-seams molded into steering wheel trim cover separate, allowing deployment of air
bag assembly. Driver-side air bag module is not serviceable and must be replaced as a complete assembly.

DESCRIPCION Y OPERACION
ADVERTENCIA: es posible el despliegue accidental
de bolsas de aire. Se pueden producir lesiones
personales. Lea y siga todas las ADVERTENCIAS y
las PRECAUCIONES DE SEGURIDAD DE LA BOLSA
DE AIRE antes de trabajar en el sistema de bolsa
de aire o componentes relacionados.
El Sistema de sujeción suplementario (SRS),
también conocido como sistema de airbag, está
diseñado para proporcionar una mayor protección
contra accidentes para el conductor y el pasajero
mediante el despliegue de airbags y pretensores
de cinturones de seguridad delanteros en una
colisión frontal. Las bolsas de aire, almacenadas
en el centro del volante y en el panel de
instrumentos sobre la guantera, se despliegan en
aproximadamente 40 milisegundos después del
cierre de los sensores de impacto. El sistema de
airbag está diseñado para usarse con cinturones
de seguridad de 3 puntos.
Durante una colisión frontal, el Módulo de control
de restricciones de bolsas de aire (RCM)
discrimina entre un evento que garantiza el
despliegue de la bolsa de aire y un evento que no
lo hace. En un choque de fuerza suficiente, el RCM
le indica a los módulos de airbag y pretensores de
cinturones de seguridad delanteros que se
desplieguen simultáneamente.
El sistema de bolsa de aire incluye los siguientes
componentes: Módulo de control de restricciones
(RCM), sensor de seguridad (ubicado dentro del
RCM), una fuente de alimentación de respaldo
(también ubicada dentro del RCM), módulo de
bolsa de aire del lado del conductor, módulo de
bolsa de aire del lado del pasajero, derecha y
pretensores de la hebilla del cinturón de seguridad
delantero izquierdo, interruptor de desactivación
de la bolsa de aire del lado del pasajero (PAD), luz
de advertencia de la BOLSA DE AIRE, resorte de
reloj y arneses de cableado asociados. Ver

Ubicaciones
FUENTE DE ALIMENTACIÓN DE RESPALDO
Una fuente de alimentación de respaldo se
encuentra dentro del Módulo de control de
restricciones (RCM). Si la batería o los cables de la
batería se dañan en una colisión antes de que se
cierren los circuitos del sensor, la fuente de
alimentación de respaldo proporcionará energía
eléctrica para desplegar bolsas de aire. La fuente
de alimentación de reserva mantendrá una carga
de despliegue durante aproximadamente un
minuto después de desconectar el cable negativo
de la batería.
MUELLE DE RELOJ
El reloj de resorte es un conjunto de contacto y
cable que se usa para transferir señales eléctricas
desde el arnés de cableado de la columna de
dirección al módulo del airbag del lado del
conductor.
MÓDULO DE BOLSA DE AIRE LADO DEL
CONDUCTOR
Cuando los sensores se cierran, señalando un
impacto, el encendedor dispara el inflador.
Durante el encendido, la azida de sodio reacciona
con el óxido de cobre, produciendo gas nitrógeno,
que infla la bolsa de aire.
Cuando se despliega la bolsa de aire, las costuras
desgarradas moldeadas en la cubierta de la
moldura del volante se separan, permitiendo el
despliegue del conjunto de la bolsa de aire. El
módulo de airbag del lado del conductor no se
puede reparar y debe reemplazarse como un
conjunto completo.

RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM)
RCM contains microcomputer, which monitors electrical system components and connections. RCM performs a
system self
-check of air bag system internal circuits every time ignition switch is turned to RUN position. RCM
also energizes AIR BAG warning light during initial system
-check self
and whenever a fault is detected. Faults
are stored in RCM memory and translated into flash codes, which are displayed through AIR BAG warning
light. RCM also communicates through Data Link Connector (DLC) current and historical Diagnostic Trouble
Codes (DTCs).
