Instrument Music Lesson Plan: Kindergarten

The lesson plan introduces kindergarten students to different musical instruments and how to play them in a group activity. Students will be split into circles of 4 and each given an instrument like a tambourine, maraca, or bells. They will pass the instruments around the circle when instructed by a song, playing their instrument when the song indicates. The goal is for the students to learn the different sounds the instruments make and follow the beat of the music by passing and playing at the right times.

Materials needed: Enough for each group to have two tambourines, a

maraca, a set of bells, and one hula hoop.

Procedure:

AS: Has anyone here ever played with things around the house to see what
kind of sounds they make? Well today we will be working with these really
cool things that make their own kinds of noises.

1. Have the students sit in circles of 4 around a hula hoop.

2. Explain what each instrument is and demonstrate how to play it.
3. Give each student one instrument.
4. Explain that they need to pass the instruments around to each other in
a circle when they hear, “round and around they go” in the song.
5. Explain that they stop and play the instrument, when the song says to
stop and play the instrument.
6. Play the song for them and make sure to monitor so that everyone is
getting a turn with instruments.
Closure: What kind of instruments did we play with today? Did they each
make their own sound? How did we know when to play the instrument?
Educational Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will have learned . . .
