4th Grade Landslide Lesson Plan

The lesson plan outlines a science lesson for 4th grade students on landslides. The students will watch introductory videos on landslides and then brainstorm ideas to design a structure to protect a house from a landslide. They will collaborate with peers to generate ideas, then select the best solution to draw and explain their design. Sample student designs will be presented for feedback. The lesson aims to teach students about landslides and the engineering design process of defining a problem, generating solutions, and improving designs.

Standards
3.4.4.C1: Understand that there is no perfect design.

3.4.4.C2: Describe the engineering design process: Define a problem. Generate ideas. Select a
solution and test it. Make the item. Evaluate the item. Communicate the solution with others.

I. Performance Objectives

Objectives
The students will be able to...
● Design a structure that has the ability to protect a house from a landslide.
● Collaborate with peers to brainstorm ideas.

Assessment Plan
● Students will complete a google form answering questions about landslides. These are 3
questions that all have open ended responses within them.

Materials
● Landslides worksheet (17)
● Pencil.

Introduction.
● Watch the Introduction video. 2 minutes and 30 seconds
● Discussion: Why do you think all of the rocks came down at once?
● Watch the next video. 3 minutes and 34 seconds
● Discussion: Imagine you were trying to decide when and where to go camping in a hilly
area? What would you look for to decide whether it's a safe place to camp?
***I can statement: I can design an idea to protect my house from a landslide.
Development
● Video explains activity to the students. 11 minutes and 30 seconds
● Key points of the video.
○ The students will come up with a design that will help people with landslides. The
student is a winner of a new house but it is located right in the middle of slide
city.
■ How can you protect your house?
○ The students will have to brainstorm ideas on how they will protect their house
from a potential landslide. All ideas are welcome ideas. Brainstorm 1 uses post it
notes. Brainstorm an idea and raise your hand so the teacher can collect sticky
notes.
**IF the teacher wanted to use Jamboard is a Google tool that allows for students to place
digital sticky notes on their board. The teacher can create a Jam page for each student and
they can place their brainstormed ideas on their designated jamboard.
○ The first brainstorm session will last three minutes.
■ BRAINSTORM 1: HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOUR HOUSE?
○ Second brainstorm session will last three minutes.
■ BRAINSTORM 2: HOW CAN YOU STOP A LANDSLIDE BEFORE IS
STARTS?
○ After both of the brainstorms are done it's time to come up with a plan to save the
house. Pick the BEST ideas on the board.
■ 1 rule: The students need to pick something you could actually do.
○ Teacher hands out the design sheet where they can draw and write about their
design to protect their house. After work is done gallery walk to see the designs.
● After everyone finishes a design, your teacher will choose a few students to present their
ideas. After the idea is presented, discuss the following two topics.
○ What is one thing you really like about the idea?
○ Can you think of one thing that would improve the idea?
● When you're done, check out these real world examples of how scientists stop landslides.
● Click the links to see the real world examples of landslide prevention tactics.
Closure
● Restate the I can statement. Today we practiced designing brainstormed ideas to protect
our houses from landslides.
● State a wrap up statement: As we saw lots of scientists have come up with ways to
prevent landslides from destroying real people’s homes. You all did a fabulous job today
of doing what scientists do!
● Transition to the next point in the day.
