Meet the Artist: Gian Lorenzo Bernini

                                            Gian Lorenzo Bernini was not only a well-known architect in Italy, he
                                            was also a very accomplished sculptor. He worked in a style called                • Born in 1598 in Naples
                                            Baroque, which was popular from 1600-1750; the Baroque style com-
                                            bined ornate details and theatrical style with great emotion. Bernini             • Sculptor, architect,
                                            wanted his Baroque sculptures to express a lot of feelings and emotion;           painter, caricaturist

                                            tomb inside St. Peter’s (an important church), and the Fountain of the            sculpture called Baroque
                                            Four Rivers, an outdoor sculpture that is also a working fountain. The
                                            fountain shows four river gods, which represent four major rivers (the
                                            Nile, the Daube, the Ganges and the Rio de la Plata) on four continents.
