Characters in Florante at Laura

a 1838 awit written by Tagalog poet Francisco Balagtas. It is considered one of the masterpieces
of Philippine literature.

Major characters:

Florante
He is the main protagonist of the novel and known as the Duke of Albania. Florante is also
the son of Duke Briseo and Princess Floresca.

Laura
Laura is the Daughter of King Linceo of Albania. She is also the love interest of Florante
and was later married to him in the latter part of the novel.

Aladin
He is a Muslim prince and a soldier. Aladin is the son of Sultan Ali-Adab of Persia. In the
novel he was the man who saved Florante from being eaten by lions in the forest. Later, he
got married to his love, Flerida.

Flerida
She is known to be Aladin’s fiancé or love interest. She asked Sultan Ali-Adab to spare
Aladdin’s life on the condition that she will be Ali-Adab’s wife. She later escaped and killed
Count Adolfo as he attempted to rape Laura.

Count Adolfo
In the novel, Count Adolfo is the son of Count Sileno and is known to be Florante’s rival.
His jealousy and envy of Florante's achievements sparked his rebellion against the king. He
was killed by Flerida as he attempted to rape Laura in his escape against the forces loyal to
the king.

Menandro
Menandro is known to be Florante’s Friend, classmate and confidant. They first met in
Athens and Menandro saved Florante from Adolfo’s attempt at murdering him. He and
Florante both shared military expedition. He also led the overthrow of Count Adolfo and
restored peace in Albania.

Minor characters:

Duke Briseo
In the novel he is the Father of Florante and the husband of princess Floresca. He was
known to be a nobleman of Albania and King Linceo’s trusted adviser. He was killed, along
with King Linseo, by Count Adolfo during his usurpation of power.

Princess Floresca
She is the mother of Florante and was known as the Princess of Crotone. She died while
Florante was studying in Athens.

King Linceo
King Linceo is the ruler of Albania and the father of Laura. He was killed by Count Adolfo
during his usurpation of power.

Antenor
Florante's reliable mentor while he was studying in Athens, Greece.

Count Sileno
Count Sileno is the father of Count Adolfo and he’s from Albania.

General Miramolin
General of the Ottoman Empire. He lead the Persian troupes towards invading Albania in
order to bring the kingdom into Islamic control.

General Osmalic
A Persian general who wanted to invade Kroton. He was later killed by Florante during a
military expedition.

Sultan Ali-Adab
He is the Sultan of Persia and the father of Aladdin. He sentenced his son to be executed
because of his cowardice in the battlefield. In exchange for Aladdin’s life, Flerida promised
her marriage to the Sultan. After her escape, the Sultan committed suicide.

Menalipo
Florante's cousin who saved him from a vulture that almost snatched him from his cradle
when they were younger.

King of Croton kingdom


He is Princess Floresca’s father and the grandfather of Florante.

Emir
One of the commanding officers who sacked Albania together with Aladdin during the
ongoing campaign of Florante and Menandro in Crotone. He nearly slayed Laura for her
refusal to love him but was defeated.
