INTRODUCTION
NARIKO
“The Heavenly Sword…all my life, I have lived in its shadow. It was forged, the
elders say, for the hand of a bloodthirsty god. Any mortal who wields it must pay
a terrible price, feeling their life-force ebb with every blow they strike. As a child
I would look upon the sword, so long unused and yet so revered, with distrust
and dread. I did not doubt its power, but I wondered if such power could ever be
turned to good. Yet within my clan the sword was worshipped and adored.
One day in the year of the Fire-Horse, so legend had it, a son would be born
whose destiny it was to lift the blade against a mighty enemy. Then, the story
went, the sword would repay the blood we had shed to protect it. It would
enable us to triumph over evil, and ensure our people lived forever in peace.
The year of the Fire-Horse arrived, and with it a child: a girl: me. The clan wept
for their misfortune, and believed that the gods had taken against them. I was
not the champion they had waited for. The first-born of their chief, I should have
been their princess. Instead, I was reviled as a living curse, a reminder
to them of their impending destruction and their power-
lessness to prevent it.
Now the shadow of the sword grows long. The day of
my clan is drawing to a close, and in the dying light
the hordes of the brutal King Bohan come running
across the plains. What else can I do but protect
the sword that he seeks, the sword that I hate;
the sword that has undone my hopes from the
time of my birth? It will kill me to wield it, but
what is death to one who has never truly lived?”

PLAYING THE GAME
Trained from birth in the deadly arts, Nariko and her adopted sister Kai have
grown into fierce warriors. When King Bohan’s lust for conquest leads him to
hunt down their clan, the guardians of the Heavenly Sword, Nariko and Kai must
use all their skills to stop him.

THE LONGSWORD
Nariko starts her adventure armed with the traditional longsword of her clan, a
basic but effective weapon. The longsword enables her to attack quickly, and
when not attacking it will block standard attacks automatically.

FIGHTING STANCES
When in possession of the Heavenly Sword, Nariko can fight in three stances:
Heavenly Speed, Heavenly Range and Heavenly Power. Each stance boasts its
own combos and superstyle attacks, and as Nariko’s story progresses and her
experience increases, new ones will be unlocked.

HEAVENLY SPEED STANCE

The Heavenly Speed stance is Nariko’s default stance when in possession of the
Heavenly Sword. It allows her to unleash lightning fast assaults using two double-
bladed swords of moderate strength. Press the s button or the t
button to attack from the Heavenly Speed stance. When in the
Heavenly Speed stance but not attacking, Nariko will automati-
cally block standard attacks (colored blue).

HEAVENLY RANGE STANCE

Press and hold the l button, then press the s
button or the t button to unleash wide-ranging twin
chain attacks which disperse weak enemies but
inflict minimal damage. A Heavenly Range attack
can deflect arrows but cannot block melee attacks.

14

HS_PS3_Manual_v9.indd 14 7/19/07 3:51:45 PM

HEAVENLY POWER STANCE
Press and hold the r button, then press the s button or the t button to
unleash slow but devastatingly powerful single-bladed attacks. When in the
Heavenly Power stance but not attacking, Nariko will automatically block pow-
erful attacks (colored orange).

COMBOS
Whether fighting with a longsword or with the Heavenly Sword, pressing the
attack buttons in certain patterns and landing hits on enemies with each blow
will make Nariko perform combos – deadly combinations of moves that inflict
increased damage. All unlocked combos can be viewed in the Combo List sec-
tion of the Main Menu. All unlocked combos for the currently held weapon can
be viewed in the Combo List section of the Pause Menu.

AERIAL COMBOS
Press and hold the l button and press the t button to knock an enemy
off their feet with a Heavenly Range attack. As they fl y through the air, quickly
move the Wireless Controller upwards to launch into the air, then press the at-
tack buttons to perform an aerial combo. Motion Control can be toggled on and
off in the Options section of the Pause Menu.

BLOCKING
Nariko will only block an enemy attack automatically if she is in the right stance
when the blow is struck. Standard attacks surround the attacker with a blue
aura, and can only be blocked from the Heavenly Speed stance or by the long-
sword. Powerful attacks surround the attacker with an orange aura, and can
only be blocked from the Heavenly Power stance. Unblockable attacks surround
the attacker with a red aura, and cannot be blocked – only evaded. Missile
attacks surround the attacker with a yellow aura and can be deflected with a
Heavenly Range attack; but be warned that the Heavenly Range stance cannot
block melee attacks.

15

HS_PS3_Manual_v9.indd 15 7/19/07 3:51:51 PM

COUNTERING
Press the t button to counter an attack from an enemy whose blow Nariko has
just blocked. If you do this quickly enough you will perform a kill counter, finish-
ing the enemy off with one dazzling move.
Remember that Nariko can only block and counter an attack if she is in the right stance
when the attacker’s blow is struck. For more information, please see the “Blocking”
section outlined earlier in this manual. Unblockable attacks cannot be countered.

KO RECOVERY
Quickly move the Wireless Controller upwards when Nariko has been knocked
off her feet to perform a KO recovery attack on the enemy who struck her. Motion
Control can be toggled on and off in the Options section of the Pause Menu.

BLOCK BREAKING ATTACKS

Nariko can perform block breaking attacks to leave heavily blocking opponents open
for further damage. Block breaking attacks are visible in the “Combo List” section of
the Pause Menu. Consult the Combo List to find out which combos are block breakers.

ITEMS
Nariko can pick up objects as diverse as hammers, wooden crates and even
watermelons. Press the x button to pick up an item, then press the x button
again to throw it at an enemy.

PROJECTILE WEAPONS – AFTERTOUCH

Various projectile weapons are available to use during the adventure: Kai’s
crossbow, picked up items and even cannons.
The aftertouch function allows you to aim and direct projectile weapons with
much greater accuracy. When Nariko has picked up an object, press and hold
the x button then roll the Wireless Controller to throw the object and control
its flight. When firing a weapon, such as Kai’s crossbow or a cannon, press and
hold the s button then roll and pitch the Wireless Controller to fire the projectile
and control its flight. Motion Control can be toggled on and off in the Options
section of the Pause Menu.

16

HS_PS3_Manual_v9.indd 16 7/19/07 3:51:52 PM

DEBRIS SWEEP
Press the t button while in the Heavenly Range stance to sweep debris from
the surrounding area into enemies.

EVASION AND RECOVERY

Move the right stick in any direction to perform an evasive roll and help Nariko
and Kai to wriggle out of particularly sticky situations. Press the s button or
the t button during a roll to make Nariko attack out of the roll.
If Nariko is knocked off her feet, quickly move the SIXAXIS ™ Wireless Controller
upwards while in mid-air to limit your damage and counterattack the enemy.

HEALTH
In order to replenish lost health, you will need to find the red Heavenly
Pots dotted around the environments. Press the x button when near
to a Heavenly Pot to smash it and reveal energy-restoring provisions.

HERO SEQUENCES
Sometimes Nariko or Kai will come up against a situation
requiring special skills to overcome it. At these moments, but-
ton prompts will appear on-screen telling you what to press
in order to complete the sequence successfully. Pay
attention and make sure to press the right buttons in a
timely manner.

17

HS_PS3_Manual_v9.indd 17 7/19/07 3:52:02 PM

STYLE
Throughout Heavenly Sword ™, you will be judged on your playing style. Style
points are awarded for performing consecutive hits, activating superstyle
attacks, successfully navigating hero sequences and using projectile weapons
to shoot enemies and other targets with accuracy. When playing as Kai and
Nariko, your hit counter is displayed on-screen. The higher your hit count, the
more style points you will receive.

SUPERSTYLE ATTACKS
As the number of style points awarded rises, the superstyle disc within the
health meter will light up. The superstyle disc has three sections, and with
every section that lights a new superstyle attack becomes available to Nariko.
Press the c button while in one of the three Heavenly stances to unleash a
superstyle attack. Superstyle attacks always kill the enemy on whom they are
performed, and often cause damage to surrounding enemies in the process.
There are nine superstyle attacks in total, three for each of the Heavenly Speed,
Heavenly Range and Heavenly Power stances. Three of these are unlocked and
available when Nariko first obtains the Heavenly Sword. To unlock more power-
ful superstyle attacks, you must earn the required number of glyphs.

GLYPHS
Your performance in every checkpoint is rated from zero to three glyphs.
A glyph is awarded when a certain number of style points have been earned
during the checkpoint. Each glyph awarded unlocks an item of locked
content – including new combos, new superstyle attacks or special features
accessible from the Main Menu.
When a glyph is earned, a message will be displayed on-screen telling you what
content has been unlocked. The current total number of glyphs earned is dis-
played in the bottom right corner of both the Main Menu and the Chapter Select
Screen. On the Chapter Select Screen, highlighting a completed checkpoint will
cause the name of the checkpoint and the number of glyphs earned within that
checkpoint to be displayed.

18

HS_PS3_Manual_v9.indd 18 7/19/07 3:52:03 PM

KAI’S SPECIAL SKILLS
Kai may not be strong or experienced enough to block enemy attacks or perform
combos, but she has some skills that are all her own.
When enemies are nearby, Kai will automatically crouch behind cover – such as
piles of crates. To fire from cover, press and hold the l button to take aim, then
press the s button to fire. Release the l button to go back behind cover.
Kai can evade attacking enemies if they get too close. Press the s button when
beside an enemy to hop over their head and leave them momentarily stunned.
